Kansas came through with sterling defensive effort on Saturday night, holding No. 6 Baylor to nearly six points below its scoring average as the Bears squeaked by the Jayhawks, 59-14.
Seriously, folks, there really wasn’t much to differentiate this game from every other Baylor domination on the schedule, other than the fact that the score might’ve been much worse if not for several dropped passes in the first half by Bears receivers.
Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty continued to be prolific and highly efficient, completing 20 of 32 passes for 430 yards and three touchdowns in barely three quarters of play. He also added a touchdown on the ground. Baylor ran for 306 yards while accumulating 743 yards of offense, all while letting its foot off the gas for most of the fourth quarter.
Kansas did get some benefit out of this game as Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weis got to see what a great offense looks like up close. But don’t look for his quarterbacks -- junior Jake Heaps and freshman Montell Cozart -- to morph into Petty any time soon. Between the two of them, they threw for 154 yards on 11 of 33 passing. Otherwise, Kansas was content to run the ball 50 times and run some clock so it could avoid too much embarrassment.
Okay, Baylor. You’ve had your run of it against a very favorable schedule. Now the real test begins. A week from Thursday, Oklahoma comes to town, the same Sooners who just handed Texas Tech its first loss. Take care of business that night and maybe we can start talking about turning BCS dreams into reality.
