One of the top defenses in the country has taken a rather significant injury punch to the stomach this afternoon.
On Twitter, Stanford announced that starting defensive end Ben Gardner will be lost for the remainder of the 2013 season due to a left pectoral injury. Gardner will undergo surgery to repair the damage.
As Gardner is a fifth-year senior, the injury not only ends his season but his collegiate career as well.
As noted in the headline, Gardner’s season-ending injury is a big blow for the Cardinal.
Each of the past two seasons, Gardner has been named second-team All-Pac-12 and had started 27 of 28 games in that span. He had started all eight games this season, and is second on the team with 4.5 sacks and third in tackles for loss with 7.5.
