Toledo inks Matt Campbell to contract extension

Less than two years into his tenure, Matt Campbell is already on the receiving end of what’s technically considered job security.

Toledo announced in a press release that it has reached an agreement on a contract extension with Campbell.  The head coach is now signed through the 2017 season.

There was no word on whether Campbell, whose $360,000 salary was eighth in the 14-team MAC, received an adjustment in his pay to go along with the extension.

“Matt Campbell is not only one of the finest young football coaches in the country, he is also a great mentor to the young men in our football program,” said athletic director Mike O’Brien. “He is determined to make the UT football program the finest in the Mid-American Conference. But more than that, he is dedicated to making sure our student-athletes get a good education and to helping them develop as well-rounded individuals. We are pleased to make this commitment to Coach Campbell and look forward to many more years with him as our head football coach.”

Campbell is in his second year as the Rockets’ head coach, promoted from offensive coordinator when Tim Beckman took the job at Illinois.

Over the past two seasons, the Rockets have gone 14-7.  This season, UT is 5-3, including a 3-1 mark in conference play that has them third in the MAC West .

“I’m grateful for the support of President Lloyd Jacobs, Mike O’Brien, and the entire UT administrative staff,” said Campbell. “I’m honored to be the head football coach at this great University. Most of all I would like to thank our players, assistant coaches and football support staff. Their effort and enthusiasm help make our program a point of pride for the University of Toledo and the Toledo community.”
