With a lot of the Notre Dame focus Thursday centered on a former/future offensive player, there was a rather significant development in the here and now on the other side of the ball that flew under the radar.
Head coach Brian Kelly confirmed yesterday that starting nose guard Louis Nix will not play in the Irish’s game against Navy Saturday. The defensive lineman missed the win over Air Force last weekend due to a lingering tendinitis issue in his knee.
Kelly said earlier in the week that Nix’s availability “will depend on his practices and the quality of his practices;” apparently, the lineman is not quite there yet.
“He’s getting closer but really didn’t get enough work for us to play him against an option team,” the coach said.
Nix, one of the top interior linemen in the country, has started 29 games the past two-plus seasons for the Irish.
