Notre Dame LB Ben Councell out for rest of season

Notre Dame linebacker Ben Councell has been lost for the rest of the season due to a serious left knee injury, Irish coach Brian Kelly said on Sunday.

Councell was hurt during Notre Dame’s 38-34 victory over Navy this past Saturday.  The 6-foot-4, 254-pound junior had 15 tackles on the season with one tackle for loss and a forced fumble.

He was the main backup to true freshman Jaylon Smith at outside linebacker, so his injury will hurt Notre Dame’s depth, especially since this is the second injury to hit the Irish linebacker corps in as many weeks. Another outside backer, Ishaq Williams, hurt his knee against Air Force.

Knee injuries and option teams go together like peas and carrots.

So true Tim. Ironically, Councell hurt his knee on a kick off so I don’t believe he was cut. However, ND lost Ishaq Williams & Kona Schwenke to cut blocks in the Air Force & Navy games respectively. I wish ND would quit playing the academies for this reason. If they insist on playing Navy, they should demand that it be the first game of the season.
