Urban Meyer: Fickell “better not have” interviewed with FAU

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer yells to his players during the first half of their NCAA college football game against Michigan at Ohio Stadium in Columbus AP

With a job opening available at Florida Atlantic, reports had surfaced that Ohio State assistant coach and one-time interim head coach Luke Fickell had interviewed for the job. If that is the case, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is not exactly happy about it.

“He did not interview,” Meyer said after practice Wednesday evening, according to The Toledo Blade. “He better not have.”

Meyer said he had not been contacted by Florida Atlantic about interviewing any of his assistants and says there is no interviewing for assistants during the regular season. It was reported on Tuesday Fickell had been interviewed by FAU athletic director Pat Chun, who had flown to Columbus, Ohio to do the interview in person.

Ohio State is off this week, so the timing of an assistant interviewing for a job opening seems to make sense, but that appears to not be cool with Meyer.

What’s he gonna do about it? Urban needs to shut his mouth.

    FU Urban.
What is this ” Do as I say, not as I do”?

  3. bender4700 says: Nov 6, 2013 9:09 PM

Urban Meyer is definitely in a position to talk about inappropriate behavior as a football coach.

Oh wait…. Mr. Retired for “medical” reasons, just to spend all kind of time with Erin Andrews then a year later take a HIGH pressure job. Yeah.

Urb’s a hypocrite but he’s the hypocrite making the rules.
    Winning justifies itself.

Nice to see the Gator butthurt every time Meyer’s name makes headlines. It’s as dependable as a Will Muschamp meltdown or a Jeff Driskel interception.

  6. beastmode5150 says: Nov 6, 2013 10:00 PM

Urban Meyer is the biggest asshole in coaching.

  7. 4buckiz says: Nov 6, 2013 10:03 PM

Keep talking haters but it’s common courtesy to contact a school about an interview beforehand. Didn’t hear any comments after Vanderbilt sent a letter to Osu canceling the game this year.

  8. peopletrains says: Nov 6, 2013 10:08 PM

Poor Urban Meyer. How does the guy find the time to cover up player misconduct and keep an eye on his assistants at the same time?!

  9. noaxetogrind says: Nov 6, 2013 10:40 PM

@ overated, I am sure just based on probabilities and sheer number of fans that there are some Gator fans who have an obsessive dislike for Meyer. However it has been my experience that most Gator fans could care less that he went to Ohio State. I think it is safe to say that most Gator fans, the AD at Florida and many coaches within college football feel Urban and his staff mailed it in the last year, on the field and in recruiting. Will Muschamp may or may not get it done but I don’t think there is any concern that he will quit working or have an emotional breakdown. Urban did a nice job during most of his time at Florida but it’s not like he put them on the map. They had won a NC before his arrival and his SEC record is not even close to what Spurrier did. I say all of that to ask, why would you assume that there is “Gator butthurt” amongst a significant number of Gator fans? You are certainly entitled to speculate, just curious what you base it on. Now I will tell what isn’t speculation….your obsession with Florida as evidenced by your monicker. You don’t see many folks who have such a “butthurt” with another school that they include said school in their name. Just saying….

So you can screw a program but when someone else does it

  11. bender4700 says: Nov 6, 2013 11:09 PM

    Haha, I’m no Gator fan.

  12. manik56 says: Nov 6, 2013 11:11 PM

I think the context was simply FAU should have asked for permission to interview Fickell first. I don’t think Meyer actually has a problem with any of his coaches interviewing anywhere. Just go through the proper channels.

  13. buckeyebornandbread says: Nov 6, 2013 11:30 PM

People are funny. All he means by this is wait till the season is over because he simply doesn’t want any distractions on this season. I seriously doubt he is trying to handcuff anyone from furthering their careers. Lets grow up just a little bit.

Congrats Kevin – probably one of the worst written pieces that has appeared on CFT! No dates what-so-ever, then you’ve thrown in an ‘interim’ coach tag for some reason, farted in an Urban no interviews have taken place, then another idiotic reference from Urban that ‘He better not have’ line. Seriously – I’ve seen better written stories from a 2 year old than this… if you actually get paid for coughing out this type of goo – then I am going to quit my day job and get me some of this!!!

Yeah, like when OSU interviewed and eventually hired basketball coach Thad Matta without contacting Xavier first?

Typical OSU fan with short term memory when his team fails follow the “common courtesy” that you speak of.

  17. tigersfandan says: Nov 7, 2013 12:36 AM

What is Meyer going to do if it turns out that Fickell did interview?

  18. jrs45 says: Nov 7, 2013 12:42 AM

I saw the interview in regards to this. He was joking and implying that Luke needs to focus on Illi and laughed. Buckeye Nation knows deep down that Luke is a great recruiter not a DC. He will be replaced regardless after this year.

  19. godofwine330 says: Nov 7, 2013 2:28 AM

He better not have is little rough. I know coaches are sensitive when it comes to losing their assistants but he better not have as far is seeking promotion is a little rough

  20. honkerdawg says: Nov 7, 2013 4:23 AM

Urban Meyer is the ultimate hypocrite and A–Hole! Nobody but him is allowed success. Maybe he ought to stick to scheduling division 2 teams to beef up his win record

  21. terryin20878 says: Nov 7, 2013 7:19 AM

Oh, please – WAKE UP, PEOPLE!!! NON-STORY HERE!!!

This is NOT a, “hell, no, you don’t leave unless I fire you” approach. Meyer, as ANY coach, does not want his assistants poached IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEASON! In the NCAA, it’s courtesy. In the NFL, it’s a mandate.

At the very least, the interviewing of assistant coaches should take place after the regular season, and if applicable, conference championships. It’s not unusual for interviews to take place between that and the bowl game, but absolutely not in the middle of a season.

Whoever came up with the title of this article should be fired for trying to fan flames that don’t even exist. The author doesn’t do a very good job, either. Sure, he eventually mentions not interviewing mid-season, but by that point, the “not on my watch” is already prominently displayed.

Anyone who thinks ill of Meyer merely because of this needs to get a grip – he’s not doing anything that any other college coach in the country wouldn’t do.

  22. mauldawg says: Nov 7, 2013 9:37 AM

Now that Kiffin has been fired UM is the biggest dick in football. That includes Pee Wee on up. He is a dirt bag.

  23. mkoogs says: Nov 7, 2013 9:48 AM

Florida must still be reeling from Urban leaving. Hate him all you want, we’ll take him in a Buckeye country. And, how’s your season going this year?

  24. jerrystollings says: Nov 7, 2013 9:49 AM

    @ vincentbojackson

Wow, I think you might want to check out the truth of the allegation that OSU did not get permission to interview Thad Matta. It took me 30 seconds to find a story from the Cincinnati Enquirer, you know, the paper that covers Xavier in Xavier’s hometown of, um, Cincinnati. The story states, and I quote “Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger asked for and received permission to contact Thad Matta last week, according to a high-level Xavier source.” Don’t believe me? Here’s the link:

It’s not a common courtesy it’s a professional courtesy but anyway you slice it it’s NOT required.

  28. bigthyme93 says: Nov 7, 2013 11:40 AM

The man can interview for any position in any program but respect must honored…do that crap after theseason

  29. sportsguy3434 says: Nov 7, 2013 12:11 PM

Almost all good coaches wouldn’t want their coach to interview 1) during the season or 2) without getting permission. Most people understand this and it could be in their contracts. People can understand that if someone is daydreaming about the job they interviewed for then they will be less productive. Saban wouldn’t let it happen nor most coaches. What could he do? Demote or fire him, but probably not. Not really a big story here.

  30. mogogo1 says: Nov 7, 2013 12:15 PM

Honestly, it would be surprising for a long-time assistant to interview for a job without his head coach knowing about it. It’d be common courtesy for FAU to ask, and certainly you’d expect Fickel to say something. And it’s not uncommon for programs to ban interviews during the season.

  31. buckcat says: Nov 7, 2013 1:07 PM

At least post the entire quote in your article. Here is the rest:

“The AD calls the head football coach. The assistant comes in and says, ‘They have an interest in me, what would be the right time?’” Meyer detailed. “My answer is, ‘Do not disrupt this team.’

“There’s absolutely no interviewing going on during this time. No chance.”

  32. cedaly1968 says: Nov 7, 2013 3:12 PM

I would be surprised if Fickell interviewed with FAU if he knew that the coach did not want him to do that. Fickell is a good soldier, stood in tall for Ohio State while ESPN removed coach Tressel to install coach Meyer. He’s a stand-up guy.

  33. jerseyshoregiant says: Nov 7, 2013 3:27 PM

Maybe FAU got permission from the AD. They don’t need Meyer’s permission just the schools permission to interview.

  34. matt24bucs says: Nov 7, 2013 4:58 PM

What a phony-baloney, dishonest piece of crap ol’ Urb is! What do you want him to do Urb? Come up with a “mysterious” illness like you did when you lost Tebow and started getting your brains beat in? Then quit and say. “I need to spend time with my family” and then promptly take a job with ESPN flying all over the country? Then take a job at another program like nothing happened? No- that would dishonest and sleazy-wouldn’t Urban??

  35. footballnut85 says: Nov 7, 2013 6:32 PM

What????? Urban Legend now has integrity? What a frickin’ phony!

AND YOU GATOR FANS JUST POUR SOUR GRAPES OVER AND OVER. A PERSON HAS A RIGHT TO COACH WHERE EVER HE WANTS, AND HE IS FROM OHIO.

  38. clemsonstillsucks says: Nov 7, 2013 11:43 PM

Ohio State probably would be going to a BCS bowl if the BCS didn’t take strength of schedule into account.

I’m ashamed about reading this article for a few reasons. 1) It was a waste of my time. 2) Reading some of the things that people are saying about Urban. Come on people! How can you let a horrible, pointless, and nearly factless (new word) get you talking about a head coach that is only making sure that some of the unspoken respect, as it pertains to asking for permission before interviewing a coach is being shown? And shame on the O-H-I-O fans that are talking about the poopoo swamp swallowers, when you all know that you still have sour grapes stinking up Ohio to this day from those whoopins the Gators put on O-state. Stop proving to the world that OSU fans are the worst fans in college!!! I live in Ohio and root for OSU AND can’t stand football season here. Only OSU fans could push their very own K. Herbstreit out of Ohio!!! And to all the swamp swallowers, be happy that you even had Urban for a few years.

I’m not sure which is the most disturbing..

    1) The multiple grammar mistakes
    2) “Pour sour grapes”
    3) THAT YOU USED ALL CAPS

    or….

    4) You can’t even correctly spell the name of the coach you are defending.

If Ohio State keeps winning they will be going to a BCS Game, The Rose Bowl. The Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange are all BCS bowls. Ohio State a long with Florida State, Alabama and Baylor are all trying to get to the BCS Championship Game.

  42. dhagobucks says: Nov 8, 2013 12:51 PM

Fickell is and was going to be gone after thisseason any way. Fickell was not his choice as DC. He was pretty much forced on him. Hopefully we get someone that can actually call a good defensive game.

  43. e135800 says: Nov 8, 2013 2:18 PM

Urban will help Fickell get a hc job after after the season is over. He’s not trying to keep him there. He is not the person to be DC. Fickel is only there out of courtesy right now. You inbreds must be butthurt still. Oh yeah, you take it up the butt all of the time so you are butthurt

  44. elojeansports says: Nov 8, 2013 3:11 PM
