‘Wholly inappropriate language’ led to Ron English’s firing

When the press release came into our inbox yesterday announcing that Ron English had been dismissed as Eastern Michigan’s head coach, it was somewhat perplexing in its timing.  Yes, the Eagles are in the midst of an eight-game losing streak, and EMU was just 11-46 in English’s four-plus seasons at the school, but the fact that it came one day before a game against an in-state rival made it head-scratching to say the least.

Now, however, we know the rest of the story.  Or, at least, a portion of the rest of the story.

In another release sent out early Saturday afternoon, athletic director Heather Lyke revealed in a statement that she had “received a tape” recently “of a situation in which Coach English had addressed the team and used wholly inappropriate language.”  Suffice to say, the content of the tape was not divulged.

Whatever it was, however, was in no way, shape or form acceptable in Lyke’s eyes.

“[T]here is no place, particularly in a student environment, where this language is appropriate,” Lyke’s statement read, in part. “The statements made by Coach English are absolutely unacceptable.”

While the tape wasn’t solely responsible for English’s dismissal, it was the final nail in his coaching coffin.

“My decision to make a change in leadership of our football program was the culmination of a lot of factors including the comprehensive review of our program, the competitive performance and this tape,” Lyke said.

Offensive coordinator Stan Parrish will take over the team on an interim basis and until a permanent replacement is found.

    Women shouldn’t be athletic directors.

If he were 46-11 in 4+ years this would have been handled differently I imagine

    Racist language? I dunno.

I worked six years for one of the best athletic directors in the nation. This person happened to be a woman and she made coaches live within their budget. She didn’t wait until the end of the season or fiscal year and let them be $100,000 or more over budget, she monitored their expenses and revenue and when necessary made budget cuts so they never were in the red. Saying a woman shouldn’t be an athletic director is highly offensive. That’s the same mentality as people saying there shouldn’t be black coaches.

Right. Except she might have just fired a coach for cursing. Leave football to the men.

Nobody knows what language he said. Everybody shut up

There should definitely be black coaches in college football, just not women. And if you’re so easily offended I feel sorry for your family.

The AD is an administrative position. The person is in charge of all the sports, both men’s and women’s, and not just football. There is zero reason a woman cannot serve in such a position.

Don’t know exactly what he said, but if he just cursed, well, this IS football.

I’m in my 40’s and when I was in high school, coaches grabbed you by the facemask to get a point across. If you loafed on a drill, a coach might order 3 teammates to gangtackle you to send you a message.

Now, if you poke someone in the chest, you have to appear at a press conference and formally apologize.
