Ohio State WR: ‘We’d wipe the floor’ with ‘Bama, FSU

Evan Spencer, Jordan Lucas AP

Monday began with Urban Meyer politicking for Ohio State, but the noise out of Columbus didn’t stop there.

Here’s Ohio State wide receiver Evan Spencer throwing out some bulletin board material — although it’s only bulletin board material if Ohio State actually gets to play in the BCS Championship:

Having confidence is fine, but maybe don’t say you’d “wipe the floor” with college football’s two best teams if you beat the only currently-ranked opponent on your schedule by seven.

Ohio State hasn’t lost a game since Urban Meyer took over in 2012. That’s a great accomplishment. And Ohio State’s win over Wisconsin is a very good one, since it should be the Badgers’ only loss of the season. By Bill Connelly’s S&P+ numbers, it’s the best win an undefeated team has all year.

On the other hand, both Alabama and FSU won extremely difficult road games (at Texas A&M, at Clemson) and picked up quality wins against solid teams at home (LSU, Miami). Sagarin rates Ohio State’s strength of schedule 81st, behind FSU (62) and Alabama (42). Baylor’s SOS is likely to jump from No. 96 with games against Texas and Oklahoma State left.

Anyways, back to the original point: Spencer may feel as if Ohio State would crush Alabama or FSU, but he and his Buckeyes will need some help to get that chance.

Ohio State has not beaten a top 10 team during the regular season since 2009. They’ve been wiping the wrong floors.

    I agree, dcroz.

Let him talk smack all he wants, but because he chose to go to a school in a second tier football conference, he sleeps in the bed he made.

Well Evan there have been a few thought the same thing you’re thinking. Notre Dame and Ole Miss to name a few. You might want to ask Te’o and Bo Wallace how that worked out for them!

It should be noted that after making the “wipe the floor” comment, Evan said “but that’s just my bias speaking” and chuckled. But, that wouldn’t be much of a story then would it?

  15. mrlaloosh says: Nov 11, 2013 4:11 PM

I can’t believe someone wasted all that time typing that stupid list. It’s Veterans Day so all I have to say is this SEMPER FI!

  16. bucrightoff says: Nov 11, 2013 4:14 PM

Look I think all of us are 100% cool if Ohio State makes the title game ahead of FSU or Baylor or even 1-loss Stanford. I mean is there anything more enjoyable than watching Ohio State lose 70-10? Watching Notre Dame get killed was fun, watching OSU get killed will also be fun.

  17. barkleyblows says: Nov 11, 2013 4:17 PM

I just read an article today that stated Ohio State needed to grab the nations attention by doing this stuff.

I really don’t have a problem with this comment… at all.

Watching an Alabama vs Ohio State game is much more entertaining then a Alabama vs Florida State.

Plus who the hell has Florida State even played this year??? An average Clemson team? A bad Miami team? Give me a fricken break!!

    Context. It matters

  21. woebegong says: Nov 11, 2013 4:22 PM

With the schedule of unranked teams that OSU has played for the most part this year, sadly they will not have to worry about getting humiliated by an SEC team again this year. I think the recent record is 1-9, so perhaps the young man needs to think before inserting his foot in his mouth.

  22. thefiesty1 says: Nov 11, 2013 4:39 PM

Tosu can’t even wipe their own backside.

  23. manik56 says: Nov 11, 2013 5:14 PM

I don’t think people realize your schedule strength doesn’t correlate to being a good or bad team. Just because you play a weaker schedule doesn’t mean you are not as good. What SOS does is separate teams that can’t be separated because of their record.

Ohio State could be the best team in the country. There is little evidence the suggest they aren’t. But their SOS provides less evidence that they are the best team in the country than FSU’s or Bama’s.

  24. pfitz2 says: Nov 11, 2013 5:19 PM

“I’m seeing these tweets that Spencer said OSU would wipe the field with Florida State. FSU never was part of the discussion with Spencer”

“Just finished transcribing relevant part of Evan Spencer’s quotes. After he said he saw Oregon/Baylor/Bama games, I asked how OSU’d do.”

“Spencer: “I guess I’m a little bit biased. But I think we’d wipe the field with both of them, but that’s just my bias speaking.” He laughed”

“I asked who the “both” was, Alabama and who? He said, “Whoever.” He never mentioned Florida State”

“Later, Spencer said,”If we execute for a full game, there’s nobody in the country that we feel can hang w/us when we’re executing way we can”

Ohio State doesn’t want any of that “average” Clemson team, let alone the straight butt whooping they would receive coming from FSU if they somehow made it to the NC game.

  30. atlfan31833 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:09 PM

All they need to now is make there tshirts like Oregon did!

  31. normtide says: Nov 11, 2013 6:13 PM

I have no issue with this. Neither should my fellow Tide fans or my FSU friends. OSU players should feel that way. They are competitive. If they don’t think they can beat any team, they shouldn’t take the field.

  32. noleitup says: Nov 11, 2013 6:15 PM

Lol. Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher are the reasons Meyer left UF. Dont worry it’ll come out in some book a long ways down the road.

  33. sillec28 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:19 PM

Last time I remember OSU and its fans bragging about how badly they’d beat an opponent was in the 2006 national championship game. And we all know how that turned out. At least half of the current top-10 teams would beat OSU easily – FSU, Alabama, Auburn, Stanford, and Baylor.

  34. randamonious says: Nov 11, 2013 6:35 PM

Good God! 21 and 0 and the haters are growing….if tOSU is not that good than why the hell are all of you so freaked out about it!

  35. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:39 PM

Learn to differentiate between the two, randamonious.

Too bad your coach doesn’t have the stones to schedule anyone who could help you back up your words… for now, you don’t have as legitimate a claim as Fresno State, in my book. PLAY SOMEBODY, then talk. Reminds me of Denard Robinson saying he’s faster than Usain Bolt… funny stuff.

  39. ezwriter69 says: Nov 11, 2013 6:54 PM

randamonious, funny stuff… you start your post with Good God! and then tell everyone else to chill out… and no clue as to the irony.

  40. sfsugator says: Nov 11, 2013 6:59 PM

wide receivers are usually the ones to say these type of foolish things. the big 10 is the worst conference out of all the power conferences. fact.

  41. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 11, 2013 7:09 PM

And we are “freaked out” by it, because they are taking away a spot to a more rightfully deserving team, much like Oregon was until last week.

  42. sportsguy3434 says: Nov 11, 2013 7:15 PM

Maybe he needs to look at his coaches chapionship ring vs. OSU and see that final score. They need a tougher non conference schedule to back that up. Maybe he should prepare to wipe the floor with the pac-12 champion, which I don’t think they can do.

  43. MasMacho says: Nov 11, 2013 7:36 PM

    Buckeye fan here:

    “1. No, you wouldn’t.”
“2. Shut up with your bulletin board material (see Ole Miss).”
“3. Just like tOSU is claiming that they shouldn’t be graded down until they lose, keep in mind that Alabama is the 2-time defending champion, and the SEC has fared pretty well recently.”

Urban has done a pretty good job managing the tOSU foot-in-mouth problem, but this is clearly a miss.

    Not smart.

If an major college team at a BCS level executes 100% flawlessly that team can no doubt defeat any team.

Problem is that no team in the history of football has ever played a 100% flawless game. tOSU would have to do that to beat Alabama or FSU. The converse is not true.

  46. thraiderskin says: Nov 11, 2013 8:17 PM

Last time I checked, tOSU regularly gets top 10 recruiting classes and supposedly has a pretty good hc… so tell me Mr Wright, what more deserving the are they taking the place of? Is it the one loss Cardinal, who lost to uTAH? Or is it Baylor, who has never accomplished a thing? Speaking of accomplishments, congrats on your team finally being worth talking about this millennium…

If you all r gonna get butt hurt by comments taken out of context by some hack blogger, perhaps testing your ability to fly off a 20 story building would be best for the general gene pool.

I am not “butt hurt” or “freaking out” by anything said on a blog. Anyone who knows me from the other NBC Sports pages knows that I play it down the middle and only feign incredulity in tongue in cheek fashion. Only losers at life who live vicariously through these sports teams would feel such.

I still haven’t dignified his tripe, I have been responding to other commenters, however.

  50. Deb says: Nov 11, 2013 8:42 PM

    @normtide …

I don’t have an issue with what Spencer actually said, now that pfitz2 has enlightened us. Nothing wrong with a guy expressing team pride. It sucks that Ryan Ginn deliberately misrepresented what Spencer said. But I would have a problem with some silly goose announcing his team could wipe the floor with an opponent and not including the disclaimer–especially if that silly goose played for my team. Only a fool gives other teams bulletin-board material :)

  51. thraiderskin says: Nov 11, 2013 8:54 PM

You do nothing but harp about Ohio State. I’ve read plenty of comments by you about them. If they are so terrible, stay the f*** out of the articles about them… go do your happy dance about your darling Seminoles and quit looking to troll. The fact is that Ohio State is undefeated for two straight seasons, thus far, they are a huge player in college football, not just this year, but for almost this entire millennium. Your team is finally good and you’re’ here crying that Ohio State is ranked behind them. How stupid is that?

  52. jarzmel says: Nov 11, 2013 8:55 PM

At least when fsu played Clemson they were ranked top 5 and Miami was unbeaten. OSU has played absolutely nobody. Everyone in Columbus was hanging their hat on northwestern. That’s funny.

  55. jrs45 says: Nov 11, 2013 9:52 PM

I can understand why everyone hates The Ohio State University. Seems like the past 15 yrs they’ve become the Yankees RedSox Cowboys of college football. I understand they have 7 titles and only 1 in the past 15 yrs but they have clearly become the most hated University. You watch Gameday and the game of the week and you see Herbstreit, you see Spielman and Galloway commentate games, you see Robert Smith talk it up with Rece Davis who is also a Buckeye, not to mention you can’t go a week without seeing a top YouTube hit by the BDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land). Watch some Sportcenter and hey there’s Jay Crawford another Buckeye.

Kind of funny while I was in L.A. I was rockin out a OSU Alum t and had several people chant out from cars and across the streets O-H!!! During my return back to Florida I watched a OSU game with several hundred fellow fans. Fact of the matter is we are everywhere and we pack 105k every game. With all of this, I can see why the young man would think OSU could win a Natl Title. It’s only a matter of time.

    Peace!

  56. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 11, 2013 9:58 PM

No, they’re the Dallas Cowboys of college football. Or the Atlanta Braves. And as such, people “hate” them because of their delusional fans who are stuck in times that are 20, 30 years ago.

Please don’t lump them in the same sentence as the Yankees ever again.

  57. greggatx says: Nov 11, 2013 10:00 PM

I don’t think “wipe the floor with them” is exactly what would happen. I do think Ohio St could beat either team. I also believe Baylor could beat either team. The sc overall is not that dominate of a force. One very good team (alabama) all the time lately and others that flare up then peter out. The acc is another conference with one or two flare up teams then not much. The only top team alabama has play are the other and overrated sc teams.

    Alabama
    Offense (FBS Rank)
    Yards: 4074 (38)
    Passing Yards: 2195 (55)
    Rushing Yards: 1879 (33)
    Points per game: 40.9 (12)
    Yards per game: 452.7 (35)
    Touchdowns: 42 (24)
    Field Goals: 10 (57)
    Defense (FBS Rank)
    Yards: 2531 (5)
    Passing Yards: 1673 (8)
    Rushing Yards: 858 (3)
    Points per game: 10.6 (1)
    Yards per game: 281.2 (5)
    Touchdowns: 11 (1)
    Field Goals: 6 (15)

    Baylor:
    Offense (FBS Rank)
    Yards: 5488 (2)
    Passing Yards: 3125 (9)
    Rushing Yards: 2363 (12)
    Points per game: 61.0 (1)
    Yards per game: 686.0 (1)
    Touchdowns: 60 (3)
    Field Goals: 9 (69)
    Defense (FBS Rank)
    Yards: 2449 (2)
    Passing Yards: 1391 (2)
    Rushing Yards: 1058 (12)
    Points per game: 15.4 (5)
    Yards per game: 306.1 (7)
    Touchdowns: 14 (4)
    Field Goals: 4 (3)

This is why Baylor is better than Alabama. Both stats for FSU and OSU (respectively) are better than Alabama but not as good as Baylor. If all teams win out then it should be FSU going up against Baylor for the Championship. But we all know there will be a sc team (maybe two again, boo) in there even with one or two losses.

  58. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 11, 2013 10:04 PM

Let me guess – you’re either a history professor or retired? Those are the only two professions that come to mind that live in the past.

Hell OSU lost the last two bowl games against the Lou Holtz-coached Gamecocks (LOU HOLTZ for God sakes – and that was with your boy with the vest at the wheel).

And just what in the hell is a buckeye, anyway? I am told some type of nut that will give you the runs if you eat it? This is from my Yankee buddies, so excuse me if they’re wrong.

I’m with everyone else on this young man’s confidence and his comments being (as usual) taken out of context. But good Lord man… OSU’s fans make the team hard to pull for. And I like Yankees….as long as they’re headed to Florida and not Hilton Head.

Thanks for the correction on the OSU bowl losses. I had gotten so wrapped up in the “Tressel invented football” thing that I forgot that someone else coached OSU other than “Oscar” Meyer and your boy Jimmy. Where did he go off to, anyway?

I do have to say one thing though – the OSU fans that moved down here are actually pretty polite (as far as Wal Mart greeters go). They also seem to get along with the Clemson fans; but that’s no surprise as they tend to work the same shift.

How do you get a SC cock grad off your porch? Pay him for the pizza!

congrats SC on winning yet another meaningless bowl game.

    LOL

Well – I’m done here. Some of us work for a living (and to support the OSU fans that don’t!).

Best of luck to all the young men who play college football…it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.

  77. jrs45 says: Nov 12, 2013 12:14 AM

I actually hope we lose the last three games now. Maybe OSU can play the fighting cocks in the carcarebowl lol!

I’ll be swinging the sticks at HH for free thanks to you. Keep up the hard work at Target buddy!

I believe Ohio State had 2 chances to beat teams from the SEC/Florida in the national championship already. I attended their last pitiful attempt. It did not go so well. I don’t see how the decline of the Big Ten since those days is going to make it any easier for them to do it now.

  81. Deb says: Nov 12, 2013 12:49 AM

    @jrs45 …

Seven titles? Really? One in the last 15 years?Congrats.

I’m a Bama fan. 15 titles–three in the last four years. 14 NFL first-round draft picks in the last six years. Just last week I texted my nephew a link to one of your band’s recent performances. Thought he’d get a kick out of Harry Potter catching the snitch.

Dude, I don’t think anyone here is jealous of your titles, your band, or your 2-time Heisman-winning NFL bust. Get a grip.

  82. thraiderskin says: Nov 12, 2013 1:42 AM

I have no issue with the truth, I’ve said FSU and bama r the two best teams. You just come on here to talk trash, but there is really no argument u can make against Ohio State. Stanford barely beat B1G Wisconsin (might want to look at their record) with a great quarter back in the rose bowl, then shows up this year and loses to perennial powerhouse Utah. If Baylor is the team u think OSU is screwing over, I would personally like to see more, the Big12 really blows.

So keep it up, you’re little more than a fraud with a thing for Ohio state.

  83. sssjim7 says: Nov 12, 2013 2:04 AM

Hrm… last I heard Urban Meyer was 2-0 in National Championship games… and Meyer WON the 2007 NC game (against Ohio State)…

He kinda split with Alabama (2-3)… but wiped the floor with FSU (5-1). He is also (1-0) against Ohio State…

I consider OSU under Meyer more like Florida was under Meyer than what Ohio State was before Meyer…

OSU under Meyer would be a good match against either Alabama or FSU…

When in fact if you played them, you’d stink!

Haters want to hate. Indeed. That’s why you always post on any thread SEC related. Usually with your brilliant “SEC SEC”.

Your envy of the SEC shows with all your inane posts. And it’s almost all of the SEC, seeing as how Ohio State has lost to Florida, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn, and Alabama in bowls.

That’s half of the conference. No wonder you’re so bitter.

Speaking of the SEC and cheating, how is it that the only time Ohio State has beaten an SEC team in a bowl is cheating by using ineligible players?

I’ll type your reply for you – “SEC SEC”

  87. dek7 says: Nov 12, 2013 10:01 AM

FSU fans probably shouldn’t gloat too much until you get past those mighty Idaho Vandals. You’ve still got a tough schedule ahead of you. I mean, they are no Bethune Cookman, but still.

    waynefontes,

First of all with a name like that you already know about crappy coaches.

I like to think that the reason why we lost half of those sec games is because the coaches were from Ohio and out coached us lol.

    Meyer Ohio
    Miles Ohio
    Holtz Ohio.

    Lol

    @waynefontes …

Thank you for responding to the dingaling. Frankly, I couldn’t make heads or tails of his convoluted post to me–other than he’s confused about who’s hating on whom and doesn’t get a compliment to his band when he sees one.

I remember Coach Fontes quite fondly.

  91. v2the4 says: Nov 12, 2013 12:35 PM

they say Ohio is the cradle of coaches, just like its the cradle of former Presidents.

I respect what Ohio state has done in the big 10, winning 20 straight games…its not easy, and if it was, then we would see multiple teams dominating their conference every year. We don’t even see that in the sun belt, C-USA or Mtn West.

tOSU is 21-13-3 alltime vs current SEC schools, and that doesn’t include the forfeited Sugar bowl win vs Arkansas in 2011.

however, 20 of those 21 wins are against the Missouri(10) ,Texas aTm(4), Kentucky (3) and Vanderbilt(3)…the other win is vs LSU in 1988.

in the 2000′s, tOSU has lost to South Carolina twice in the Outback Bowl, to Florida in 2006 BCS title game and in the 2011 Gator Bowl, and they lost LSU in the 2007 BCS title game. so, on the big stage in bowl games vs the sec, tOSU is 0-5, and 1-5 if you include the Arkansas sugar bowl game.

They are 0-3 all time vs Alabama and 0-3 alltime vs Florida St, the two schools in front of them in this weeks BCS rankings.

current vegas lines on bcs title matchups.

    Alabama -6.5 vs FSU
    Alabama -13.0 vs Ohio State
    FSU -9.5 vs Ohio State

Ohio St -2.5 vs Stanford in Rose Bowl
Oregon -8 vs Ohio State in Rose Bowl

  92. jrs45 says: Nov 12, 2013 1:29 PM

    v2the4,

So what you are saying is records are meant to be broken? Sweet we have a chance!

  93. dkhhuey says: Nov 12, 2013 1:50 PM

@v2 – I love the selective editing the a vast majority of the SEC folk do when it comes to wins/losses vs an SEC team. Anytime a B1G team beats an SEC team, you immediately revert to the ‘oh, it was against Vandy, UK, Texas A&M, {insert any SEC team name} was rebuilding that year, so on and so forth! If any one of those teams started winning now, well, that illustrates how powerful and great the SEC is. It makes me laugh! Look, I’m not here to start yet another pissing match because frankly, I don’t care, and if I did, I couldn’t amass a counter offensive because the SEC holds a boatload of crystal ball over the last 10 years! Until somebody comes along and knocks them off the hill, they are king and own the bragging rights!

OSU has had a horrid record over the last 20 or so years versus the SEC but that have absolutely no impact on this year’s team, not even the vacated win over Arkansas does, even though it was only a few years ago. This is a vastly different Ohio State team coached by a vastly different coach. If you think that this is the stereotypical ‘slow big and fat’ B1G team then you haven’t been paying attention lately! This is a team loaded with young, aggressive, strong, and quick talent and to flippantly write them off in the title hunt conversation based on games that happened 8 – 9 years ago is flawed, lazy, and uninformed thinking!

  94. bamajs says: Nov 12, 2013 1:56 PM

Isn’t that just CUTE what little Evan said! Go back out and play, little fella…

  95. normtide says: Nov 12, 2013 2:04 PM

V isn’t an sec fan, I seem to recall he is a Texas fan.

I’m a Bama fan, and can tell you it sucks that OSU could be left out. Baylor too, for that matter. It isn’t OSU’s team that’s hurting them, its their league. I personally think the B1G has some teams that are up and coming. But it is pretty mediocre this year.

For the record, in my biased opinion, I don’t think Bama would beat OSU 100-0. I think it would be close in the third and Bama would pull away in the fourth. Kind of like the LSU game. The reason OSU should get a chance is because football is a game of breaks. OSU could catch a few and win.

I feel for OSU and their fans. They are doing everything they can. The real issue may come down to who is perceived as better between OSU and Baylor. Because there is a lot of football left to play. Bama has an Iron Bowl that’s shaping up to be a brawl. FSU has a recent history of slipping up. Florida has talent, and may have nothing to lose vs FSU. That makes for a dangerous game. Best of luck to all.

For the record, I give OSU the nod over Baylor. The legacy vote in action. Traditional powers always get in ahead of new fads.

“We`ll kick their ass. We`re going to beat them. And if you don`t like it, you can go to hell.“

    – Linebacker Rohan Marley during a news conference before Miami`s 34-13 loss to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Be careful what you wish for Evan. You’re probably too young to even know about this game.

  97. dkhhuey says: Nov 12, 2013 4:19 PM

@v2 and normtide – sorry, didn’t mean to say V2 was an SEC fan – not that there is anything wrong with that – just meant to say ‘they’ instead of ‘you’ in the 2nd sentence.

I was making a general statement that whenever a B1G team beats an SEC, the vast majority of SEC fans are quick to toss that logic in to dismiss the win. I saw it after big time after OSU beat Arkansas a few years back… it was quite humorous to see the wave of that logic tossed into the sports threads!

I would love to see an OSU vs Bama game because the only way to remove the ghosts of past NC thrashings by the Gators and LSU, as well as the horrid past record of against the SEC would be to take on the king – and right now, that is Bama!

Bwahahahah!…. I had forgotten all about that ridiculous claim. He was actually challenging Bolt’s speed within the 1st 50 meters. Bolt is longlegged and he has to make some adjustments after the start to compensate for the shorter runners that get off the starting block with a slight edge. Its keeping that edge over the last 50 meters that proves to be the problem…

  102. packergator says: Nov 18, 2013 9:05 AM

He’s funny – almost as funny as watching scumbag Urban Meyer go undefeated in one of FBS’s worst conferences and never get into the title game. SEC’s not looking so bad now, is it Coach?

  103. dkhhuey says: Nov 18, 2013 7:04 PM

@packer – ah, still can’t get over it I see! He didn’t leave the SEC – he left Florida and I’m guessing OSU will be in the title game several times under Urban before you even sniff another chance! Especially since you’re about to run your coach out of town very soon! I think Urban will be just fine, unlike yourself, who is obviously still dealing with the breakup!!!

  104. mattvotaw says: Dec 3, 2013 10:15 AM

I don’t agree with the “Wipe the Floor” Comment, but the author needs to get his facts straight. Sagarin has the BUckeyes S.O.S. at 61, not 81, which is better than FSU.
