Report: Jameis Winston not talking to police

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston reportedly will not talk to police regarding an ongoing investigation in to alleged sexual assault incident from last December. Winston has not been charged for any wrongdoing at this time but is merely a person of interest.

According to a story by Joe Schad of ESPN.com, Winston will use his right to not speak to authorities conducting the investigation. Winston had previously submitted a written statement regarding the incident. The police have yet to have a face-to-face conversation on record with the Seminoles quarterback despite the alleged incident taking place almost a year ago. Winston’s attorney was approached about the investigation in February. The state attorney just received the case this week and there is no timeline for when the investigation will conclude.

The timing of all of this creates a distraction for what ha generally been one of the more positive stories in college football this season. Winston’s charming charisma in leading the Seminoles this season has been uplifting and inspiring in a number of ways. This story will float a dark cloud over Florida State the rest of the year until the investigation completely clears Winston of any unlawful acts, but at this point in time there is no reason for that cloud to start raining on Florida State’s championship plans. Winston has not been charged, so there has been no reason for the school to issue any suspensions for violations of team rules or anything like that. Florida State officials have been aware of the investigation and will continue to monitor the situation as needed.

Winston is a Heisman Trophy favorite and a finalist for the Walter Camp Award. He is also leading Florida State to a potential second straight ACC championship and likely spot in the BCS Championship Game.
