Starting Cyclone DE David Irving arrested, charged after domestic incident

An incident involving scissors, a female and the police has left the short-term status of a starting member of Iowa State’s defense up in the air.

Bobby La Gesse of the Ames Tribune reported early Thursday morning that defensive end David Irving was arrested Wednesday afternoon after Ames Police Department officers were called to a residence in response to a domestic dispute. After speaking to both Irving and the alleged victim, Irving was charged with domestic assault with injury and simple assault.

From the paper:

The victim claimed to be assaulted by the defendant, who also cut a portion of the victim’s hair, in an argument, according to the complaint and affidavit provided to the Ames Tribune by Ames police. The victim showed bruising and a cut on the side of a leg. The victim was also cut on the hand, which the victim claimed was from scissors, according to the complaint and affidavit. The defendant denied cutting the hair of the victim, according to the complaint and affidavit.

The football has not commented on what the off-field incident may do to the defensive lineman’s on-field playing time.

Irving did not play in last Saturday’s loss to TCU due to what the Tribune said head coach Paul Rhodes described as “a non-football related health concern.” Prior to that, Irving had started the first eight games of the season.

This season, Irving has 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
