Ohio State edges Baylor for No. 3 BCS spot; Alabama and FSU still 1-2

University of Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Saban stands next to Coaches' Trophy after team beat Notre Dame in NCAA college football 2013 Discover BCS National Championship game in Fort Lauderdale AP

The latest BCS rankings didn’t change at the very top this week. Alabama and Florida State stayed at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, as both programs continued on their road to a potential BCS title game matchup.

But things got a little more interesting at the No. 3 spot.

Ohio State edged out Baylor by a margin of just .0013, which means the Bears could potentially pass the Buckeyes next weekend if they beat No. 10 Oklahoma State.

And, of course, whoever gets that No. 3 spot has the potential to jump up into title contention if either Alabama or FSU mess up.

Could Baylor eventually jump Florida State if it keeps winning? It doesn’t appear likely at the moment, especially if the Seminoles keep locking down the No. 2 spot in the polls.

Another team whose fortunes have risen is Oregon, which is back at No. 5 and the top-ranked one-loss team after Stanford’s loss to USC. However, Auburn is lurking right behind at No. 6 and could leapfrog its way into the top three or four with an upset of Alabama on Nov. 30.

Here’s the latest BCS Top 10:

1. Alabama, .9914

2. Florida State, .9661

3. Ohio State, .8869

4. Baylor, .8856

5. Oregon, .7917

6. Auburn, .7860

7. Clemson, .7681

8. Missouri, .7281

9. Stanford, .6238

10. Oklahoma State, .5890

Whew!….Despite BAMA won fans could definately tell they had the “BAMA Fatigue”… Happens every season as there is always one game where they don’t play at their potential and look fatigued…

    Roll Tide…..

I can’t believe Ohio State is ranked above Baylor considering Ohio State hasn’t played a ranked team in two years! Not to mention Baylor is a lot better team. Hopefully Baylor will jump them next week. Oregon should be ahead of them too.

    Roll Tide!

Well, I hope that was it! Sure would hate to see the Tide have a game like that against Auburn or in an SEC Championship. But must say I prefer competitive games to blowouts :)

  7. totallysirius says: Nov 17, 2013 10:02 PM

If you go by average placement in all the statistical categories, Baylor should be ranked 1,FSU 2,Bama 3, OSU 4.

Baylor is in the top ten in nearly every category and number 1 in several.

  8. jrs45 says: Nov 17, 2013 10:08 PM

I personally think it should be ucf vs northern Illi in the BCS game. Where’s the love?

  9. lbijake says: Nov 17, 2013 10:08 PM

Think Ohio State should have at least 100 points for the fans putting the little “t” on their posts.

Uh oh. Urban’s gonna have to pull double duty and try to dig up dirt (or make up dirt) on Baylor now too.

Why? They got beaten to a pulp by the best team in the nation, but have blown everyone else to smithereens (i.e. better than EVERYONE in the Little 10).

It’s cute watching Baylor walking around, talking up a storm like Yosemite Sam. Go back to the kids table and stop bothering us Ohio State fans so we can focus on the juicy Rose Bowl matchup vs. an established program like Oregon. Your Fresno State Tortilla Chip Bowl game will still be just as relevant to bowl pick ‘em pools. Happy?

  18. timh1955 says: Nov 17, 2013 10:50 PM

@BrownsTown: It’s cute watching you OSU people walk around like you are good team in a good conference. You aren’t. You haven’t played a ranked team in two years! Who do you think you are…Boise State? My team will be in the BCS but we will make sure and watch whatever team you play in whatever bowl you play in…totally own you.

    Roll Tide!!!

Stanford at 9? They’ve lost to two pretty bad teams.

  23. roleofgovt says: Nov 17, 2013 11:19 PM

What’s up with people saying OSU hasn’t played a ranked team in 2 years? In 2012 they played ranked Michigan St., Nebraska, and Michigan. Would have played another ranked team if bowl eligible. This year they have played ranked Wisconsin, Northwestern (at the time), and likely Michigan St., and then a ranked opponent in a BCS bowl. The last two BCS bowls they played in were wins against #7 Oregon and #8 Arkansas.
Sure many of these were not “highly ranked” teams, but ranked nonetheless.

  24. gquesen says: Nov 17, 2013 11:51 PM

I think Ohio St. Is good. Yeah, their conference sucks, but so does FSU. As an Oregon fan, I’m excited about the possibility of Playing Ohio St. I’m the Rose Bowl (obviously disgruntled about the Stanford loss). I look at Ohio St. And see a damn good team. I like the big 10 better than the the ACC.

  25. angelheartsbuckeyes says: Nov 18, 2013 12:12 AM

I keep seeing that tOSU hasn’t played a ranked team in 2 years?? Just last season we played MSU and Nebraska the first two conference games and they were both ranked when we played them.

Remember, the polls come out AFTER the games are played. The week five Coaches Poll does not have MSU ranked. Correct. That does not mean they were not ranked the day before when the Bucks played them. This is the case with both MSU and Nebraska. Ranked when we played them, unranked after we beat them. So, you’re wrong about that and you are also wrong about the kind of team the Bucks are today.

We are good. Are we Bama good? FSU good? Maybe. I know we are talented. I know we have a great coach. Baylor is talented too. There are a few really good teams out there. This is why I am craving a playoff. So again, are we Bama good? I don’t know that we are any more than you know that we aren’t. The right playoff structure doesn’t leave those kinds of questions.

2014 can’t get here soon enough.

  26. bigtiddi says: Nov 18, 2013 12:49 AM

Damn. All the hate for the Buckeyes. They could beat both Florida st and Alabama. They would pound Baylor!

  27. bigtiddi says: Nov 18, 2013 12:54 AM

I would put Wisconsin up agains any team Florida state and Alabama has played

  28. timh1955 says: Nov 18, 2013 12:56 AM

@bigtiddi – Dream on! Myer left Florida after Saban totally owned him and he (Myer) could see the writing on the wall that a new sheriff was in town. Alabama would totally embarrass him again “if” they ever played. As long as OSU plays in a ridiculously easy/weal conference they should have no problem acting like they are good…..just like Boise State did in the WAC and MWC.

  29. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 18, 2013 1:20 AM

Teams like Wisconsin are interesting arguments, because they run the ball, and stick with it.

But if they get behind (see the Boston College game), then there’s that. If they can keep a game on either side of one score, then their chances are very real. Same with Stanford.

Speaking from a Florida State standpoint.

    ————–

With Braxton Miller at “QB”? How are you so confident? I will go into full Mayock mode here and give you credit for Hyde and Smith, but your defense is nothing special. And Miller is no better than Tajh Boyd — again, total objectivity, which I would expect from an Ohio State fan who would dare argue this — so how, then, do you figure this?

And the Noles defense is better than any team’s this side of Michigan State. Literally.

  31. bigtiddi says: Nov 18, 2013 1:25 AM

@timh. Give Urban 5 weeks to prepare for anybody. I would out money on him. Just the statement that Nama would embarrass OSU is funny. We average 60 PTA a game. You actually think that would stop? Bama may put some Points agains OSU, but so would OSU. Maybe 40′s

  32. timh1955 says: Nov 18, 2013 1:34 AM

The second and third string of Alabama are usually playing in the second half plus Saban doesn’t believe in running the score up. OSU seems to think by running up the score on very weak teams it will some how impress others. Boise State thinks the same thing. It’s not classy.

  33. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 18, 2013 1:43 AM

The flaw in the “give so and so 5 weeks” thinking is that you talk as if the other coach will spend the month sipping Mai Tai’s in the Caribbean and not game planning also. I just don’t buy into that. Not with this level of coaches.

“but have blown everyone else to smithereens”

24-14 at home to BC. Who lost by 30 to USC.

    @pastabelly
“Big 10 will be a powerhouse after Maryland and Rutgers arrive next Fall.”

Well, to be fair, Maryland may be FSU’s second best win. LOL.

“Stanford at 9? They’ve lost to two pretty bad teams.”

8-3 USC, 4-6 Utah, both on the road. They’ve also beat some pretty good teams, 9-1 Oregon, 8-2 ASU, 8-2 UCLA. Who is behind them that should be ahead of them?

OK State is at 10. They lost to LOL WVU. You know, the team that lost to Kansas. Their best wins are 7-4 TTU and 6-4 KSU.

USCe. Lost to 6-4 Georgia and 4-6 Tennessee. Hard to say that’s better than the teams Stanford lost to. Good wins against 9-1 Mizzou and 8-1 UCF. Two really good wins (vs. 3 for Stanford), one loss to a good team (just like Stanford), and one loss to a 4-6 team. But Utah is much better than Tennessee. USCe has a claim (beat Clemson and they’ll deserve to be ahead of Stanford) but they’ve done less so far.

A&M. No bad losses (Bama, Auburn), but both at home. Problem — no really good wins, either. Best win is at 7-3 Mississippi, then 6-4 at home against Vandy. Win out against Mizzou and LSU and they could make a case to be ahead of Stanford, too. Not yet though.

    After that it gets silly.

That is exactly right. Urban’s “health scare” is that he could see that Saban was building a machine at Alabama. Also, how Florida really ran into the ground after Tebow left.

Muschamp is awful, he’s not close to Meyer’s class.

But Meyer knew what was coming with Saban so he quit like a coward, I mean had those SERIOUS health issues that sidelined him for a whole year.

Urban Meyer is a great coach, that can’t be argued.

Of course, his health was so terribly bad and he wanted to spend more time with his family.. for a year.

Then again, that’s Urban Meyer for you. Not quite living up to his lofty standards off the field.

Urban Meyer will build a legitimate power at Ohio State. Even when the Big 10 can field more than one powerful team. He’s a great coach, and that is a great program.

I’m sure he will win at least one national title in Columbus.. much to my chagrin and the joy of Buckeye Nation.

But this year, Alabama would beat Ohio State by at least two touchdowns. So would Florida State.

I’ll reserve judgement on Baylor. If they run the table, they would easily be considered better than Ohio State. But Baylor seems like one of those Kansas State teams that will lose one game at some point.

  38. waynefontes says: Nov 18, 2013 8:32 AM

I also LOVE hearing the Ohio State sheep try to defend their pathetic out of conference schedule by stating that Vanderbilt backed out on them at the last minute.

Vanderbilt? The same Vanderbilt that every tOSU fan says is awful, just like they say most of the SEC is. I guess Vandy is good depending on how it fits your situation.

Then again, I guess Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota (and I love Minnesota’s story this year), Northwestern and Purdue really set the world on fire.

Those same fans who bag on Arkansas, but is Iowa’s track record recently much better?

What has Penn State done lately (besides, well you know…)

Ohio State has some great OOC games in recent years – Texas, Miami, Southern Cal. Ohio State has had some great OOC games.

Buffalo, San Diego State, and Cal? And Vandy?

But go ahead Bucknuts, rag on the SEC’s out of conference scheduling. Not only do most SEC teams play at least one solid OOC game every year (if not two) and least SEC teams play in a great conference.

Then again, the Big Ten does get Rutgers and Maryland. Wow.

  39. dkhhuey says: Nov 18, 2013 10:53 AM

@wayne – sorry, Baylor’s schedule is currently ranked below OSU’s in strength. The point that Baylor should be ranked higher than OSU is complete BS! They have played a weaker schedule than OSU to date!!! Sorry statistics do not lie. If they beat their opponent this coming week then I believe their strength of schedule will be above OSU but that has not happened! I can also postulate that by the time OSU and Michigan State meet in the B1G Title Game, then OSU’s schedule strength will also improve and should also get a boost because of Wisconsin’s continued winning. All of that is complete speculation so let’s stay with what has actually happened and that is in the fact that Baylor’s schedule, as it stands now, is weaker than OSU and they do not deserve to be moved ahead of OSU!

It is simple, the Buckeyes are not that good. I am a Big Ten guy and admit the conference is down this year. I understand so far they have beaten everyone they played, but Baylor has had the more impressive wins. I personally do not see FSU or Alabama losing this season until they play in January.

  42. timh1955 says: Nov 18, 2013 11:23 AM

  45. kansas531 says: Nov 18, 2013 2:22 PM

Still trying to figure out how SEC teams are ranked so high. Their non-conference schedules (all of them) are so weak, of course their records are going to be good. Some stats: The records of the Div I schools the SEC has played and won non-conf is a combined 28 – 33. The records of the Div I non-conf teams the SEC has lost to is a combined 45 – 11. In other words, if they play an opponent out of conference that is any good, they lose. Too bad the pollsters don’t use statistical data when they make their rankings.

  46. timh1955 says: Nov 18, 2013 2:39 PM

@kansas531 – Here’s a thought…maybe the pollsters look at which conference has won the National Championship the past seven years and will probably win #8 this year.

  47. longborer69 says: Nov 18, 2013 4:03 PM

    @8080texans

The Orange chooses first and would have taken Oregon for a Clemson vs Oregon matchup. Oregon-Baylor would have only happened if mega-chaos put them both in the NCG.

    @SOS discussion
Can’t believe we’re debating SOS of national contenders whose schedules are rated 72 and 85. That’s putrid. But hey, you both beat Buffalo as your toughest OOC opponent. Good job. At least Baylor plays 9 conference games, but when your conference includes Kansas and Iowa State….

    @kansas531
Auburn’s best OOC win is at home against 5-5 WSU (10th best team in the PAC). They beat them by 7. Did I mention it was at home? Yes, I did. They played 1 FCS, a 6-4 Sun Belt team, and a 4-6 CUSA team. Sorry, but that’s pathetic.

  48. jrs45 says: Nov 18, 2013 6:51 PM

Just stop with the SOS nonsense. Put anyone on the field with Florida State and they’re blowing them away. Top 3 national offensive line, second best offense overall, best receiving corps, a top QB, second best defense in the nation. I don’t care who has played who. When you are bigger, faster, deeper and overall more talented than everyone else, then it does not matter what conference you play.

  51. ohioguy614 says: Nov 18, 2013 10:36 PM

WOW, was it just me or did anyone else think ‘Bama got a free pass this week looking very underwhelming against Mississippi State? I didn’t hear anything about their pathetic showing considering they are ranked no.1 Florida State looked great as usual. If nothing changes in the standings, I will go hoarse cheering for Florida State against ‘Bama in the NC game.

  52. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 18, 2013 10:51 PM

You get a pass when you have the belts, just like boxing. Until you are definitively beaten, you are allowed a stinker or two, as long as you still win.

If Mississippi State were even REMOTELY competent offensively (more them than Bama’s defense) they would have won.

  53. randamonious says: Nov 19, 2013 8:07 AM

I was taught to always follow the money. ESPN gets the SEC contract and all of the sudden the SEC is King.

SEC has Bama and who? ESPN pimped Florida and Georgia mightily and where are they? Preseason both were top 10. TAM and SC were pimped as well.

The Nascar crowd will crow about their tough conference, but I have watched too many games this year to buy into that. There is one very good team in the SEC and a bunch of so-so’s who were overrated this year.

I think there is a bias against OSU that they can’t overcome, part of it is because they play is such an awful conference. Really, their only victory of note is Wisconsin. Beating Michigan State will be impressive in the Big 10 title game.

I don’t think Baylor runs the table. If they do, judging the Big 12 against the Big 10.. not a clear cut call.

@Dkhhuey: why bother with your ridiculous comment? What? nothing constructive to say, just insults. When Meyer was at UF he boasted many times about the “character of his players”, you know just trying to make folks believe had a team full of Tebow jrs. Now that a grand jury is looking into the “POSSIBLE” legal issues of 1 player for certain possibly more, all of a sudden he knew nothing…

On second thought take your own advice about the pointy foil hat and go outside the next time a thunderstorm approaches…

@ohioguy614; sadly you have nothing to say and must be brothers to dkhhuey since both of you can’t respond with anything but insults.

No, I believe Obama is a citizen, naturally born….
Secondly, see my above comment to dkhhuey, the man was by all accounts the “sherriff” in the swamp, but yet had no clue of the character of some of his players. Hernandez didn’t become a thug/possible murderer AFTER he signed a $40 mil contract with New England. No sir, that type of deepseeded meaness had to be there when he was on UF’s roster. But if it helps you sleep at night believe whatever works for you….
