‘Cuse corner back home after suffering lung contusion vs. FSU

There was good news Monday evening regarding the health status of a Syracuse football player.

Julian Whigham was released from a Tallahassee hospital and returned to Syracuse yesterday, two days after suffering a rather significant scare in the blowout road loss to Florida State.

The sophomore cornerback collided with a teammate late in the teammate late in the first quarter, triggering what one account said was “blood flow[ing] out of his mouth.” Whigham was rushed to a local hospital and, after there was some initial concern as to whether he would live or die, was diagnosed with a lung contusion and possible tearing of scar tissue in his esophagus. The latter, the school stated in a press release, stemmed from a prior surgical history for Achalasia.

Achalasia, the Mayo Clinic’s website writes, is s a rare disorder that makes it difficult for food and liquid to pass into your stomach through your esophagus.

Whigham, the release stated, will continue to be monitored by the team physicians and university medical staff after spending the previous two nights in the hospital.

When or even if he returns to the playing field for the 2013 season will be determined at a later date.
