Tide a ‘scratch’ betting favorite for BCS title

Nick Saban Getty Images

With two games left until their respective conference’s championship games — and one left until the mother of all rivalry games — Alabama and Florida State, as expected, remain the odds-on betting favorite for a showdown the first week of the new year.

In Bovada.lv‘s most recent set of odds released yesterday, the Tide is listed as a “scratch favorite” at 1/1 to win the 2013 BCS title.  The Seminoles are at 8/5.

Both UA and FSU have shorter odds than a week ago, with the former previously at 5/4 and the latter at 7/4.  Entering the 2013 season, the Seminoles were at 22/1 and behind 10 other teams to win the BCS .

Both Baylor and Ohio State are seeing longer odds despite being the only other two undefeated teams from one of the Big Five conferences left at the FBS level.  The Bears, which are within a win over Oklahoma State Saturday of leapfrogging the Buckeyes into the No. 3 spot in the BCS standings, have 7/1 odds (4/1 last week) per Bovada while OSU, winners of a nation’s best 22 straight, are at 10/1 (17/2).

On-loss teams Oregon (20/1) and Auburn (33/1) remain at least a peripheral part of the betting discussion, as does Missouri.  Mizzou, which was off the board last week, is back at 75/1.

No other teams were listed by Bovada.

    Roll Tide………….

I believe my favorite thing about being a Tide fan is just how much envy and jealousy the rest of the country has towards the greatest tradition in the history of college football. I understand that if Auburn beats Bama, it will basically end the sting of SEC national championships but what it won’t do is have the two best teams facing each other. It will have a powerful FSU facing a wannabe like Baylor or Ohio State…

    Dhardy,

Why do people automatically go thumbs down when a Bama supporter says “Roll Tide”? You would think people would admire the commitment to excellence that Saban has shown year end and year out with the kids.

Case in point, you have 13 players on this year’s team that have GRADUATED. Most
won’t ever see a professional football field unless they buy a ticket. These kids came
back for a chance to make history that hasn’t been done in decades. They want to leave a legacy that they can tell their grandchildren about.

Should they accomplish that task, they should be applauded, not shown disdain.

When the SEC streak ends,(and it will), the new National Champion will have a side note to the Title “ending the streak of SEC dominance in the National Championship
game.” rather than what they actually accomplished.

Way too much football left to giving odds.

I think it may have something to do with the context in which it is said. It’s like someone who always says “I heard dat!” instead of providing a thoughtful, intelligent response or comment.

I don’t speak gambling odds, so all that stuff is Greek to me. But we shouldn’t even be thinking about a title game with the Iron Bowl looming. That game will be a dogfight from start to finish. And if Bama is fortunate enough to prevail, the team will have to turn right around after that big emotional contest and play the SEC Championship.

So it’s far too early for oddsmakers or anyone else to be thinking about Alabama’s chances in the BCS game.

  9. Deb says: Nov 19, 2013 12:17 PM

As for “Roll Tide” … for Bama Nation, it’s the universal answer to everything.

    Roll Tide.

  10. BrownsTown says: Nov 19, 2013 12:28 PM

Let’s reconcile those 15. Can you list the 15 years so we can audit these spurious claims?

    http://deadspin.com/5975168/the-definitive-list-of-actual-no+bullshit-college-football-national-champions-or-why-alabama-is-a-liar

Reading about a few of these 15 makes me laugh and I want CFT nation to be able to share in the laughter.

  11. BrownsTown says: Nov 19, 2013 12:31 PM

Hint: it’s not important to win your bowl game if you are claiming 15. To that end, I hereby proclaim that Ohio State was national champions in the 2006 and 2007 seasons as they entered the title game ranked #1.

Wow, three titles in seven years. Tressel is a legend!

Awww fancy that you would be the first to respond to Amos’ comment as you are a regular BAMA fan antagonist/basher to the point that its way beyond hobby. You must be getting some pay for all your snide comments with biased and hateful undertones. You never miss an opportunity to let us southerners know just how much you detest “our kind”. So spare me the “victim complex”.

@1990tiger; Oh really…Last time I checked “I heard dat” is a slang term and that is completely different from “Roll Tide” which is our fans way of supporting our team. Interesting that you chose a form of slang for comparison and absolutely absurd. It is no different from the “War Eagle” Auburn fans use or “Go Ducks” that Oregon uses or the “Hookem Horns” that UT uses. The reason some Tide fans only put Roll Tide is because anything else is met with disdain, bigotted and stereotypical comments. So as for YOUR opinion that it is not “providing a thoughtful intellingent response or comment is BS! This is a college football blog not a Literature class!!

@Amos; It doesn’t bother me at all. It just displays the arrogance and bigotry that unfortunately will always exist amongst man kind. Some of us can rise above it but then there are others that make it their mission to discredit, insult, and look down on others. In the spirit of brother/sisterhood all I can say is ROLL DAMN TIDE!!!!!!

    @dhardy8207 …

BrownsTown is an ass who revels in being an ass. Supposedly he’s married to an Alabama girl–though she’s an Auburn fan. Even so, I can’t imagine how any Southern woman could tolerate such an ass. He never offers any relevant football commentary, but lives here solely to stick it to Bama fans with references to T-Town Menswear, bigoted comments about Southerners, and needling about our championships. It’s a kind of mental masturbation that allows him to feel superior. It’s all he has. Bless his heart.

  16. drummerhoff says: Nov 19, 2013 12:58 PM

FSU can’t get jumped in the computers. Can they get jumped in either poll?

Please consider that FSU’s remaining schedule will keep them off of TV’s center stage. In November, out of sight means out of the voter’s mind. Playing noon games v Idaho and Duke can’t help. On the other hand, Baylor has the kind of offense that gets voters attention late in the year (see RG3’s Heisman Trophy win).

Maybe it’s a longshot, but we are talking odds here. A big Baylor win this Saturday night on ABC can change the conversation … And doesn’t the college football media world love controversy and chaos in November? Interesting, interesting ….

    Brownstown,
Remind us of all of your national championships again for all time? I just remember you getting run over by 1 and 2 loss SEC teams I don’t remember. This should be a short response. I wonder if you would talk as much if yoy were #2 and about to play for the championship possibly. You talk like you won last year. Why don’t you play Alabama or LSU or FSU or Oregon or someone good in the preseason so you have a quality win.

    sportsguy,

I will personally add Alabama or LSU or FSU or Oregon or someone good to the preseason schedule in exchange for an SEC team playing a game away from home (Jerry World doesn’t count either). I guess LSU went to Penn St. One down…

You were on track for that until Bama backed out to clear their schedule….no one.

    1westcoastphinfan …

For some reason, nearly all FBS teams from every conference have FCS teams on their schedules. It’s not unique to Bama. Apparently there’s money in those games, but I won’t pretend to know how that works. I’m a Bama fan but think FBS teams should be barred from playing FCS games. Maybe the strength-of-schedule element to the upcoming playoffs will eliminate this practice. Sure hope so.

Enjoy it while you have it !! A few years ago my Trojans were the standard and everyone was hating on us. Including how we got treated on sanctions for ONE individual while other subsequent programs got minor slaps on the wrist for NUMEROUS violations with photographs/written confessions from alumnus violators. Here’s hoping nothing “pops up” as a violation in the near future !!! There are tons of Bama hater’s out there.

  27. sportsguy3434 says: Nov 19, 2013 3:14 PM

    Brownstown,
1 You forgot to list your national championships minus any vacated wins.

2 Your memory is short. Alabama played Michigan last year! They’re won 41-14 and helped send Michigan into a tail spin. They beat Penn State at home AND on the road the two years before that. That doesn’t sound like they are scared of teams from the north.

    3. Remind me of the last quality pre season opponent tOSU defeated? I’m beginning to think you like to smear instead of really make a point. Btw a quality win at Jerry’s world is better than beating a weak team. Don’t be jealous that you aren’t invited. AGAIN, invite Alabama or LSU to play a home and home.

  29. Deb says: Nov 19, 2013 5:46 PM

    @trojan33sc …

Actually, Bama has walked in USC’s shoes. In the not-too-distant past, we were punished far above the level of the infraction while other teams danced away with wrist-slaps for greater misdeeds. Our program languished for years under the weight of those sanctions. I do feel your pain and believe it’s wrong for any school to be punished for the actions of individuals who then move on to new coaching positions or to the NFL.

However, USC was not punished for the actions of just “ONE” individual. Trojan fans posting here always forget that a coach admitted knowing of Bush’s financial arrangement–and that is what led to the program being slapped for lack of institutional control. You have a right to be angry–but direct your anger at the appropriate people.

  32. normtide says: Nov 19, 2013 8:27 PM

The crazy thing is, an SEC team has the best shot to end the SEC’s run. Either way, I am very proud of the program, the last 5 years have been unprecedented. And, even if we don’t win it all this year, we are national players for the foreseeable future.

  33. wardamneagle53 says: Nov 20, 2013 10:03 AM

I’m new to this site, so I’m coming in late to the conversation and personalities…

I’m an Auburn fan, have been all my life… I’m from Atlanta… my most hated team, because I’m from GA I guess, is UGA… I despise them, as their fans are the most obnoxious, far worse than Bama fans…

I have great respect for Bama, and Saban… I just can’t bring myself to not recognize what they’ve done…

this hatred of Bama and the SEC is hilarious… you Big Ten fans really need to lighten up… your conference stinks, don’t blame anyone else for that…

and the SEC is the best, has been for the past seven years… you can’t argue that logically…

good luck to all your teams, and WAR DAMN EAGLE!!!!

  34. normtide says: Nov 20, 2013 11:20 AM

Nice post wde53. People have Bama/SEC fatigue. I get it, I’m the same way with Jimmy Johnson, the Yankees in the past. But you can’t deny greatness. I dint like the Miami heat, but only a fool would say they aren’t great.

I’m a Bama fan who respects Auburn. You can not keep them down, they always bounce back up. A state the size of Alabama has two national powers. Home of the last 4 crystal footballs.

Best if luck, going to be an awesome Iron Bowl. Already enjoying the build-up.

  35. tide4life says: Nov 20, 2013 3:32 PM

norm, it will likely be epic, however it ends.

  36. dhardy8207 says: Nov 20, 2013 6:25 PM

Bama fan here, but I must say if we’re going to lose to anyone I think I could take the “L” better if it were to Auburn. If BAMA doesn’t make its way to the NC game, I would like nothing better than to see the battle chickens take the field. At least that still gives our state the opportunity to make it 5 in a row!

Roll Tide or War Damn Eagle, either our young men will have earned the title of National Champions!

  37. normtide says: Nov 20, 2013 6:47 PM

Dhardy- It’s been a historic ride, hasn’t it? Nothing can take away the last 5 years. The only shame would be not enjoying it. It will, this year, next year, who knows? But I’m with you, if it can’t be Bama, I prefer it be Auburn.

  38. dhardy8207 says: Nov 20, 2013 7:01 PM

@normtide; it sure has been a great stretch and I can only hope that if all the new recruits that have given verbal commits stick with it then the next couple of years will produce fantastic possibilities to add more crystal to our collection. So much so Tiffany’s will become envious!

    Roll Tide!
