Larry Coker closing in on extension with UTSA

If UT-San Antonio has its way, Larry Coker will be leading its football program deep into this decade.

Athletic director Lynn Hickey confirmed to the San Antonio Express-News that the university is closing in on a contract extension with Coker.  In fact, it appears that dotting some i’s and crossing a few t’s is all that stands between an official announcement of an agreement that would extend Coker’s contract to beyond its current 2015 expiration date.

“Just say that we’re working on the details and that we need to move it to the (UT System) Board of Regents before we release any of those details,” the AD told the Express-News. “But we are working toward that and certainly want him to be with our program for several more years.”

The 65-year-old Coker, the former Miami Hurricanes head coach, has led the Roadrunners since the football program’s formation in 2009.  UTSA didn’t actually take the field until 2011, and have gone 17-15 under Coker as it transitioned from the FCS the first year to the FBS the past two.

UTSA is 5-5 in its first season in Conference USA, but will not be eligible to play in a bowl game until the 2014 season even if it were to hit six wins — unless there are not enough bowl-eligible teams to fill all 297 of the postseason slots.

297 slots for postseason games? How does an odd number of slots work?
