The commitment to improving Louisville’s athletics program could be preparing for a bit of an upgrade. As Louisville begins to transition from the American to the ACC next year, the Cardinals are looking in to plans to expand Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
According to a report by Card Chronicle on SB Nation, Louisville’s athletic department has issued a request for proposal for a feasibility study on expanding the currently open north end zone. This is merely the first stage of a process that will determine whether or not it is financial feasible for the school to complete any planned expansion projects for the football stadium.
As reported, the suggestion is Louisville’s expansion plans would be to enclose the stadium’s north end zone, which currently has just a stadium scoreboard, although how seats would be added is anyone’s guess at this time.
The current capacity for Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium is listed at 55,000. Louisville had the nation’s 29th largest attendance increase in 2012 and averaged 49,991 fans per game (48,584 fans per game in 2011). For comparison’s sake, Louisville averaged 40,047 fans per game in 2003.
