It took a couple of overtimes, but not only did Navy extend its winning streak to three straight but its starting quarterback made FBS history in the process.
In Navy’s 58-52 win over San Jose State in triple overtime, quarterback Keenan Reynolds rushed for seven touchdowns, including a 25-yarder in the final extra session that proved to be the game-winner. The seven rushing touchdowns in a single game broke the FBS record of six by a quarterback, first set by Air Force’s Dee Dowis in 1989 and tied by Navy’s Craig Candeto in 2002.
The FBS record for rushing touchdowns in a game by a player at any position remains Illinois’ Howard Griffith‘s eight in 1990.
Reynolds now has 26 touchdowns on the ground this season, one away from tying the quarterback record of 27 by Navy’s Ricky Dobbs in 2009 and matched by Kansas State’s Collin Klein in 2011. Dobbs set his record in 14 games while Klein did it in 13; Reynolds has a chance to obliterate that standard as the 7-4 Midshipmen has the regular-season finale against Army plus a bowl game remaining.
With 240 yards rushing, Reynolds also became the fourth quarterback in the academy’s history to both rush and pass for 1,000 yards in the same season.
