Report: no decision likely on Winston case before Thanksgiving

It now appears that a decision on whether or not Jameis Winston will face charges related to an alleged sexual assault won’t come until after Florida State completes its regular season.

Speaking to the Associated Press Saturday, state’s attorney Willie Meggs, whose office is conducting the investigation into an alleged off-campus assault last December, said it’s unlikely he will decide to pursue charges against Winston prior to Thanksgiving this Thursday.

I very seriously doubt that we will be finished by Thanksgiving,” Meggs said. “We still haven’t gotten everything we need to get.”

Whether a decision is made the day after the holiday remains to be seen, although it’s likely no announcement from Meggs’ office will come until next week.  The Seminoles close out the regular season this coming Saturday on the road against Florida; they will face an undetermined opponent a week later in the ACC championship game.

I’m shocked, Meggs is going to drag this out.

Just long enough to intentionally affect the Heisman voting. They know there’s nothing here, so naturally they drag it out, which is simply the truth coming to the light about this situation (and the motive behind it) all along.

Stop delaying. You either have enough or you don’t at this point in time.

Hopefully he’s not charged. He seems like a nice enough kid, but we shall see.

I mentioned this on a previous story.

Only one person in the saga has been in something like this before…it is Meggs.

10 years ago he forced a case to trial on FSU player Travis Johnson, despite all evidence he forced a trial where an all female jury acquitted Johnson unanimously in 20 minutes.

My point is this should be known and maybe someone less prone to media interviews and leaks to the media should be in charge.

I say this for the drake of all parties.

Sexual assault charges need to be taken seriously no matter who is involved.

Playing this the out in the media is good for nobody involved. I think Meggs history should be noted by media outlets, but it has not been. I only read about on FSU centric sites.

And I am not downplaying the seriousness of this. It is serious again regardless of who is involved.

We know he has nothing. This is Meggs modus operandi. He’s a scumbag.

If Winston did anything wrong, dotting i’s and crossing t’s would be done while holding him in the Leon County jail to keep him off the streets. We should be getting a new statement from central Florida any hour now, right TMZ?

I’ve heard a report, there’s a video around showing the alleged victim ‘on top’! I’m just thinkin’ here, but I don’t believe someone on top can be getting raped. But that’s just me!

I can’t confirm any of the rumors going around Tallahassee because I’m not there anymore and am removed from that community to know. I do know people who would know about the investigation though. The girl wanted this to go away; others did not and pushed it. Her story never added up from the beginning and she tried to pretend that non of this ever happened after the initial complaint was withdrawn, and others were willing to go along with that because no one wanted this in the national media nor did anyone want to ruin this girl’s life either.

There are no charges coming; there is only going to be long pauses from Meggs to drag this out because as all of us who have lived in Tallahassee know, this is what he does because he loves the limelight. BSPN coming to speak to him must be a thrill for him since it’s been nearly a decade since anyone cared nationally about what he was prosecuting.

The funniest thing I’ve seen people try to peddle is that TPD is a friend to football players and would be in on a coverup.

Right??? I can’t get people to see that enough.

    Mr. Wright 212,

The only reason I can think people have this ignorance is that they’re confusing campus police with TPD? But those are two very different entities, and I don’t think people get how much smaller than some of these spread out campuses FSU is than say like UF or places like that. Also, the campus (outside of the engineering school) is right smack in the middle of Tallahassee, which isn’t a metropolis, but isn’t exactly some small town like Gainesville either.

Even so, when you tell them all this, they think you’re “just trying to create an alibi for the whole situation because you’re an FSU fan” lmao. I mean goodness, I shouted down and berated both Gregs who were kicked off the team in the past 18 months, and didn’t unconditionally support them JUST BECAUSE I am an FSU fan. And Greg Reid was a BIG PLAY, consistent offensive/kick return threat for us, not some no-name guy who we wouldn’t have missed regardless.

With the evidence the SA has that we know about any Joe Shmo off the streets would be arrested and in jail or out on bond by now. The DNA, the woman’s claim (assuming her story is plausible), the fact that she went to a hospital and submitted to testing with a rape kit, and Winston’s refusal to talk to the police, would be enough by themselves for a SA to make a decision in a normal sexual assault case. Have we seen any evidence that Winston’s not guilty? None that I know of except the famous “two affidavits” from fellow football players. LOL.

  14. Mr. Wright 212 says: Nov 26, 2013 7:34 PM

However, sillec28, any Joe Schmo with any good sense of the law would know that if Meggs DID have something 9 months ago or now, he would have charged Winston by now.

The “loose ends” he’s tying up are just as likely to be alerting the woman’s counselor to be quiet and verify who brought this whole thing to the forefront when the woman realized that what she did by intentionally naming someone who was built like Mike Tolbert and not Jameis Winston amounted to a misdemeanor and would have more long-term consequences than being put to shame by bitter FSU fans, who will forget about her come January 8.
