Notre Dame loses center Nick Martin for remainder of season

Notre Dame center Nick Martin will miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee during the first quarter of the Irish’s 23-13 win over BYU, head coach Brian Kelly said on Sunday.

“We’re still getting a little bit more information,” Kelly said during his weekly teleconference. “We had an MRI. I’ll probably have a little bit more specific details, but he’s out for the season.”

Martin is the second Irish lineman to get knocked out for the season due to injury, with right guard Christian Lombard being the other. Martin started all 11 games for Notre Dame.

Sophomore Matt Hegarty replaced Martin at center against BYU and will man the spot the rest of the way. The Irish play Stanford on Saturday, so Hegarty will need to get up to speed quick if wants to play well against the stout Cardinal defensive front.
