Five finalists for 2013 Butkus Award announced

The finalists for the award given to the nation’s most outstanding linebacker were announced Monday morning, and all I have to say is good luck to whoever is tasked with selecting a winner.  This will not be an easy choice.

The Butkus Award revealed its five finalists for the 2013 version of the trophy and, without any further ado, here they are — in alphabetical order so as not to prejudice the voting pool:

  • Anthony Barr, UCLA
  • Khalil Mack, Buffalo
  • C.J. Mosley, Alabama
  • Ryan Shazier, Ohio State
  • Shayne Skov, Stanford

Mosley is the only one of the five who was also a finalist for the 2012 Butkus Award, which was won by Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o.

Shazier (19.5, 3rd), Barr (17, T-8th) and Mack (16.5, T-13th) are in the Top 15 nationally in tackles for loss.  Mack is tied for eighth in the country in sacks with 10.5, while Barr is tied for 26th with eight.

I’m not taking away from anybody on that list, but Max Bullough should be on there…

I agree Bullough should definitely be on that list,

I will be honest, I haven’t seen every snap these guys have played this season.. but for Chris Borland not to be in this final group; color me confused on what a college linebacker should be then.

Impact play after impact play.. do it all and all over the field.

Mack will be an amazing pro…definitely a 1st Rd Draft pick

No Chris Borland? Do these people who make these lists watch football

Maybe Borland isn’t good enough to win but anyone who has watched him play knows he should be considered

Mack is an absolute game changer. Shows up against top competition as evidenced by his work v. Osu and Baylor.

Ryan DAMN Shazier has been in beast mode all year but the last few games… just ridiculous!!! Whether he wins it or not, I am glad he was at least in the top 5!!! I’m sure Devon Gardner is not looking forward to meeting him this Saturday!

No Chris Borland? This list is a joke.

Chris Borland in best pure LB in CFB and I hate Wisconsin so there in no favoritism here just the truth.
