Auburn claims two first-place votes in AP poll

Auburn Fans AP

As was the case in the coaches’ poll, Auburn is nipping at the heels of Ohio State in a poll that has no bearing on the BCS rankings.

The Associated Press Top 25 released Sunday afternoon shows the Buckeyes at No. 2 and Auburn at No. 3.  The Buckeyes lead, though, is a scant 31 points.

Interestingly, the Tigers received a pair of first-place votes, while the Buckeyes received none.  Even more surprisingly, those first-place votes came from writers on a non-SEC beat: the Los Angeles Daily NewsScott Wolf (ballot HERE) and the Raleigh News & Observer‘s Joe Giglio (ballot HERE, explanation HERE).  Auburn was ranked anywhere from first to fourth on the media ballots, while Ohio State was ranked anywhere from second to… eighth?

That’s right, one voter — Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press — placed the unbeaten Buckeyes No. 8 on his ballot, behind two-loss teams South Carolina and Stanford.

For a look into Sharp’s reasoning for such a head-scratching placement, one of his tweets from last night might crystallize his stance:

Such an objective, cogent argument, Mr. Sharp.  Your paper and the AP should be proud.

On that note, below is the remainder of a poll that once again is not part of the BCS rankings.

    Yes.

Drew Sharp is an idiot who loves to draw attention to himself by writing negative stories to get people PO’d. This hack should have his vote taken away.

the more pathetic not being mentioned is the combined 8 losses of the last 2 overrated SEC teams in the poll. seriously folks? 4 losses does not make you a top 25 team, I don’t care about your potential at “full strength”. a loss is a loss, and in TAMU and uGA’s case, it’s 4 too many.

Who voted for the Bison? I may just send him a bison steak for recognizing the greatness on Fargo.

As a Phillies fan I hate to agree with someone with that screen name, but this is dead on.

I’m not naïve enough to think that voters don’t have their own favorites/biases/whatever, but someone who tweets something that stupid shouldn’t have a vote.

And the worst part of it is, judging from his tweet, he really wasn’t getting much of a reaction or attention, so he had kind of put it out there again.

Bill Robinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch voted for the Bisons. Two weeks in a row now.

    I would’ve left buckeyes at #3

Could Bama sneak back into the title game IF both FSU and Ohio St.lose? Of course, it’s a long shot.

“Such an objective, cogent argument, Mr. Sharp. Your paper and the AP should be proud.”

Like you were a couple of years ago when you wrote a post on FSU and called the program “a joke” for no real reason?

Oh, that’s right. It’s okay when YOU do it!

    LOL Typical Buckeyes/Browns fan….

  10. infrno says: Dec 1, 2013 6:05 PM

He put them 8th because he realizes if they a thusly played anyone they would have at least two losses if not more.

  11. Deb says: Dec 1, 2013 6:29 PM

Drew Sharp. Of the Detroit Free Press. As in Michigan.

    Classy

If he can’t do his job objectively, he shouldn’t have it. Do I think Ohio State is better than Auburn, Missouri–or Alabama, for that matter? No. But #8? That’s ridiculous. They’re undefeated, and if SOS plays no role in the discussion, they’ll go to the title game. I’m okay with that. If Sharp doesn’t want them in the title game, he should start rooting for their opponent in the Big 10 Championship rather than being a little twit when marking his poll ballot. Fortunately, it doesn’t count.

@couldntthinkofaname: I don’t ever recall referring to the FSU football program as a joke, but I do recall lambasting them for their reprehensible public treatment of Bobby Bowden.

“It’s sort of like you have to put your favorite dog down.” — FSU trustee chair Jim Smith, Oct. 2009.

If that’s what you’re referring to — don’t know if it is or it isn’t — guilty as charged. It was indeed a joke how the university’s highest-ranking officials publicly dealt with the man solely responsible for what the FSU football program is.

I stand by every single letter I typed during that period. Every last one.

One more thing: I don’t vote in the AP poll, and never have. I don’t vote vote in the Harris poll, which actually matters, and never have. If you can’t see that distinction, then, well…

  13. chachooga says: Dec 1, 2013 7:28 PM

Please take Sharp’s opinion away from mattering…who can do that? Please do.

SEC is so hyped. Really Mizzou? mid tier BIG12 two year ago? REally AUB vs. Mizzou in the SEC championship??? Last year neither were in a bowl game.

Prediction both Auburn and Mizzou will lose whatever bowl game they go to.

If OSU is undefeated and FSU is undefeated it should be clear 1 vs 2 for the BCS.

  14. chachooga says: Dec 1, 2013 7:46 PM

    WHY IS STANFORD #7???????

they lost to USC and UTAH….THEY LOST TO UTAH!!!

They are going to get destroyed in their bowl game…they stink!

  15. chachooga says: Dec 1, 2013 7:51 PM

    @JohnTaylor

it was probably Benny K calling FSU a joke, I never forgave him for displaying the U logo upside down.

As an FSU alum, FSU fan, Jimbo Fisher fan, etc….I totally agree with you and argue to this day to all my FSU family members and friends, that if Bobby wanted three more years, he should have gotten them. I think the handling of that was horrible. Bobby made FSU…period.

  16. John Taylor says: Dec 1, 2013 8:04 PM

@chachooga: Ah yes, the upside-down U/Ben/chachooga imbroglio. Those were the days. ;-)

I understood at the time and I still understand that Bobby probably hung in there a coupla years too long. There was just no need to treat him they way some FSU officials did publicly. He deserved better than that, more than earned better than that.

FSU is in a very good place football-wise, and it still all goes back to Robert Cleckler Bowden laying that foundation damn-near 40 years ago. That’s his legacy, dadgummit.

  17. monsterright says: Dec 1, 2013 8:47 PM

Why all the SOS talk when tOSU’s schedule is stronger than FSU with a game against a top 10 team to go? The question isn’t should tOSU be in. It is Should Auburn or Mizzu jump FSU due to their SOS.

  18. marcinhouston says: Dec 1, 2013 11:20 PM

#8 for Ohio State is fair. They looked like a #8 team in the last two BCS championship games they appeared in. The Big Ten is really not much different from the MAC, Conference USA, etc where other low ranked undefeated teams have emerged in past years. Big stadiums and big tv contracts dont mean legit teams and players.

Mr. Sharp comes across as very bitter. Tattoo U? Grow up, dude. You act like Terelle and Co. murdered somebody.

  20. bringingthepain says: Dec 2, 2013 11:33 AM

marcinhouston, shouldn’t you be in school. You sir, are an idiot.

  21. onlyoneleft says: Dec 2, 2013 7:47 PM

No losses in two years and OSU should not, at least be #2? ESPN and southern sportswriters will do their best to get an SEC team in the national championship game. “Ears” Finebaum is already guaranteeing it. Mizzou should be #3. Auburn will drop that horseshoe this week. Go Mizzou!

I, for one, am glad that you have no votes. Your ranking for this week would look like this:

    1. Auburn
    2. Alabama
    3. S. Carolina
    4. Mizzouri
    5. LSU

Drew Sharp is the least liked of the columnists at the Freep. Joe Rexrode and Jeff Seidel are the ones that people like to read. Don’t judge the paper based off of one tweet from a guy that has MSU ranked at #13. He is very much not a homer. If anything, he spends all of his time bashing the Big Ten.
