Gators fire OC Brent Pease, OL coach Tim Davis

Will Muschamp‘s job may be safe, but at least one of his assistants has found himself on the coaching unemployment line.

The Associated PressMark Long is reporting that offensive coordinator Brent Pease has been fired, one day after a dismal 4-8 season came to a merciful end.  Long reported that Pease met with Muschamp at 11 this morning and was notified of the decision to go in a different direction.

Florida is expected to officially announce Pease’s departure this afternoon.  There could be additional changes on the offensive staff as well.

Pease, who will be owed $1.2 million for the remainder of his contract, was in his second season as the Gators’ coordinator after replacing Charlie Weis.  UF’s offense was simply miserable in 2013, making Pease’s departure inevitable.

This year, the Gators finished the regular season T-111th at 18.8 points per game, 112th in total offense at 316.7 yards per game and 107th in passing offense at 170.9 yards per game.

In which direction Muschamp will turn is unknown, but it would behoove him to make a quality hire who can make an immediate impact on his moribund offense.  If Muschamp can’t get the offense turned around, and if his tenure continues on its current trajectory, it will be Coach Boom who finds himself looking for a new job at some point in 2014.

UPDATED 2:51 p.m. ET: In a press release, Florida confirmed that offensive coordinator Brent Pease “will not return for the 2014 season.”  Additionally, offensive line coach Tim Davis was dismissed.

“I have a lot of respect for Coach Pease and Coach Davis,” said head coach Will Muschamp in a statement. “They are both good football coaches and even better people. There have been a lot of unfortunate circumstances this year, but that is part of the game sometimes. I want to thank each of them for their contributions to the program both on and off the field.”

“I  am grateful for the opportunity to come to the University of Florida and work with a bunch of great coaches, administrative staff and players,” said Pease.” I know we came up short of our ultimate goal, but I will carry on knowing I gained valuable friendships and relationships during my time here.”

I can’t see 170.9 yards being 10th in passing offense as you’ve posted, do you mean 110th?

    Uh oh Clemson fans…….

Well now this is an interesting twist in the swamp. There were several blogger’s post perdicted the OC would take a hit before Muschamp would. Kudos for being correct if you were one.

It doesn’t matter who you fire if you’re a gator, then you’re garbage

Please please please hire Tim Tebow as the new OC.
Never mind football, we want the entertainment.

Given Pease’s prior record with his schemes and Muschamp’s unwavering dedication to run, run, run despite the situation, I wonder what Pease was told when he was being interviewed about freedom to run his own style.

The smart move would be to go and get Kerwin Bell.

Wasn’t it a couple years ago that Florida fans were blaming Charlie Weis for sucking? I am starting to see a pattern here…

Another sacrificial lamb. When will it be Will Muschamp’s fault for why his offenses are terrible? You’re not Florida’s defensive coordinator, Will. You’re the freaking head coach, act like it.

Florida’s offense has gone downhill since Dan Mullen left to become HC at Miss State. Looks like attempt to boot Muschamp is wide left this year.

Pease’s prior record? Let’s not get too crazy here. He was an OC for one year at Boise, 2011.

The MWC is a bit different than the SEC in terms of the defenses that he was going up against.

I think people confuse Pease with Harsin. Pease basically inherited Harsin’s offense, kept his hand on the rudder for a year, then inexplicably got the UF job.

The offense was awful for two years. Even with the injuries, you should be able to see some sort of development out of your skill players.

Here is my favorite media quote, “Since joining the Gators as offensive coordinator, the team has not ranked in the top 100 teams in terms of pass offense or scoring offense.”

Like I said, go get Bell. He bleeds orange and blue. He has outstanding relationships with state HS coaches and will be able to lure top offensive talent to UF. Hiring him would boost the O, boost recruiting, and pacify a very angry fan base.
