Alabama fans claim Chris Davis was out of bounds, petition for overtime

Chris Davis AP

As Chris Davis blasted into the end zone Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium, it was easy to wonder: How, exactly, did he stay in bounds?

There’s a faction of Alabama fans that believe Davis stepped out of bounds, apparently. And on Monday, a petition surfaced on Change.org about it.

Chris Davis from Auburn was clearly out of bounds in running the missed field goal back for a touchdown in the 2013 Iron Bowl. There was way to much riding on this game for that to have been missed- a SEC Championship and National Championship. I think they should put together an overtime play for Auburn and Alabama. Yes, I know how impossible that sounds and how much trouble it will be BUT sometimes you have to make wrongs RIGHT and with so much riding on that game the SEC and NCAA needs to make it right for the players, university, fans, coaches, SEC and SPORTS in general. And if they don’t like the hassel then go out and make sure your employees, the refs, are not making such HUGE mistakes. And the refs needs to be punished for not even reviewing the play because it wasn’t even close- he was CLEARLY out of bounds. Its not fair to say that this is over and overtime can’t be played now just because of how much trouble this would be to put together. It was wrong….and you need to make it right regardless of the hassel.
SEC and NCAA- do the right thing and make this right for everyone involved!!

The screenshot the petition uses is supposed to show Davis’ foot touching out of the field of play, even though it doesn’t. Davis’ foot isn’t on the ground in the screenshot. Plus, despite the pandemonium at Auburn, officials easily could’ve determined by replay that his foot was out of bounds.

But trying to argue logic here is pointless, since the thought of Alabama and Auburn playing overtime periods sometime this week is hilarious. Maybe the Iron Bowl overtimes could take place before the SEC Championship? Mizzou would probably like that.

As of this posting, the petition had 342 signatures.

The Alabama-Auburn meltdown wasn’t confined to one small petition, either:

“..the SEC and NCAA needs to make it right for the players, university, fans, coaches, SEC and SPORTS in general”

Sports in general? really? is it that bad in Alabama that your life revolves around losing a football game …. that you make yourself believe that your Alabama football team is really that important in the grand scheme of things?

how about a petition to have Saban reprimanded for not having his team prepared to cover the kick return? at least that happened and it not something made up for an excuse

  6. mvp43 says: Dec 2, 2013 3:29 PM

Alabama lost because of their own stupidity in coverage. Its a sucky way to lose for sure, and that play may never happen again- but face it Tide fans…….. you’re beloved coach did not prepare your team for that possibility.

This will make his move to Texas a lot easier.

  7. villain612 says: Dec 2, 2013 3:31 PM

Alabama and their fans have nothing to do for a month. This isn’t shocking.

This is why I didn’t think they would beat Florida State anyway. 6 receiving options to cover, and with those shaky corners, I just didn’t see it anyway. And with some of the tactical errors that Saban has made in several games (they won in a few and those mistakes were covered up until Saturday), I am just not buying the “five weeks to prepare” line that Alabama fans love to tout about Saban, as if Jimbo would have been playing golf and lying on the beach the entire month?

  9. gorilladunk says: Dec 2, 2013 3:32 PM

I have no dog in this fight and I’ll admit that I thought he was pretty damn close to being out of bounds. I figured that if CBS saw nothing to warrant a replay, there must be nothing there. Anyway, ‘Bama fans need to stop crying. It borders on the pathetic. They might put together a petition seeking information as to how Auburn managed to run all over their defense.

This is accurate, and I know it first hand. But I don’t hold it against them, considering that it is the only game in town. It’s the same with Portland Trail Blazer fans in the NBA. It’s not like here in New York where there are a million things taking place 24/7.

SEC fans just don’t get it.

Here’s an idea: Kick the SEC out. Let them have their own league. So the rest of us can enjoy sensible football and don’t have to hear a lot of really stupid fans say stupid things.

Oh, SEC fan, messaging me on wordpress to call me stupid is so damn hilarious you don’t even know. How pathetic are you? Like I’m going to respond to you? I don’t care what you say, clearly you care enough about what I say. Losers.

Sorry Bama fans, but this just wreaks of desperation, and to be honest… I think you’re better than that.

You lost…. in the greatest Iron Bowl ever played. I would think you’re still going to get a BCS bowl… just don’t be that team that is disappointed to be there or you might get curbstomped again by a team that shouldn’t be in the same stadium as you ala ’09 Sugar Bowl.

So, bender4700, why the generalization to all SEC fans? Really, why the SEC antipathy in general? This silly little petition isn’t even about Alabama fans in general.

Yep, there are some fans who are spoiled, idiotic, and need to get a life?…at every single successful sports program everywhere, both college and professional. Thankfully, most fans at every program, including SEC football programs, just enjoy sports as being a fun entertainment.

But I’d like to remind my auburn friends of their daily rants about booster clubs buying referees, bribing the SEC office, every player being paid, etc. Let’s not get too carried away about fans being crazy.

  20. bender4700 says: Dec 2, 2013 4:01 PM

Bama’s offensive line is nowhere as good as last year, and defense has been suspect all season.

  27. palmbeachbuckeye says: Dec 2, 2013 4:14 PM

Instead he throws his team under the bus with comments like, The Kicker made those kicks in practice, or they should have been covering the right side of the field. How about I screwed up, I shouldn’t have tried a 57 yard FG in a tie game with a true freshman kicker with the least athletic group of guys on my team.

The screenshot is extremely photoshopped. There are two easy ways to debunk it: 1. The head of the coach wearing white doesn’t line up correctly with Davis’s position. 2. The coach wearing orange IS MISSING AN ARM…

And a third way, Davis’s foot that’s supposed to be out of bounds is clearly not touching the ground but hovering over it.

Not to mention that they used an EXTREMELY blurry picture to edit.

Classic transferral. They cannot fathom how badly the great Nick Saban messed up that game, so they find something else to blame.

Some day after lots of therapy maybe it will occur to them to ask why Saban was trying a 57-yard field goal without guys ready to cover a return, why he didn’t pass the ball to try and get any closer than that, and why he’d previously passed on a 40-yarder that would have put them up 10.

You have loyal fans and the respect of every school outside Alabama. You’re part of a rivalry equaled in intensity only by OSU-Michigan. Alabama fans need to be more furious with Nick Saban, who lost his collected freaking mind in the 4th Quarter.

So let me get this straight:
    - You pass up a 30 yard FG and go for it on 4th and 1, get stuffed, and let Auburn tie the game
    THEN
    - You turn around and try a FIFTY SEVEN YARD FG at the end of the game!!! Instead of trusting your 2 time BCS Champion QB and running game to score a TD in OT and put Auburn away.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. Malzhan simply outcoached Saban when it mattered the most. He had his team prepared for EXACTLY what would likely happen (a missed FG) and Alabama was so sure they’d make it they failed to put anyone with any speed in the game.

As soon as Chris Davis cleared the edge, he was gone. There’s a reason that (most) NFL teams have starters on special teams. Apparently that was too important a detail for Saban.

To Alabama fans: It was a great, historic run, and I know you’re depressed and angry. GET OVER IT. You had MORE then ample chances to win the game and didn’t. You will just reload next season and be the favorites in the SEC West again.

But this kind of thing only shows just show spoiled and entitled that the majority of your fan base is. This isn’t a minority doing things like this. One only needs a Twitter account to see that.

  70. frank booth says: Dec 2, 2013 8:15 PM

Packerbadger- I posted this on another thread, but apparently you missed it:

I don’t really like Alabama and I went to a Big 10 school. The things that you’re saying about Alabama are silly. Over the last 5 years, Alabama has 35 Academic All-Americans in all sports, while Wisconsin has 10. Wisconsin has zero in football, while Alabama has 3 or 4, with several of those repeating.

They have two All-Sports Academic All America’s of the year, including one potential Rhodes Scholar. Wisconsin has zero since they started giving out the award in the early 1990′s.

Wisconsin is not Northwestern or Vanderbilt; they bend standards to get football players in no differently than Alabama, Michigan, USC, and on and on. There is nothing to prove that there have been payments to players at Alabama or Wisconsin, even though there was that whole shoe thing that happened in Wisconsin in 2000 that caused the suspension of 26 football players and 5 years of probation, and a loss of scholarships.

And comparing pro teams to college teams is absolutely sad.

And you can’t talk about cheating and trashiness without invoking the name of Ryan Braun, who railroaded another person to protect himself, lied to his friends and fans, and is about as bad as it gets in sports of any kind.

Also, if you are knocking other programs in regards to national championships, Wisconsin has 28 and Alabama 23. However, of those championships for Wisconsin, 8 of those are in boxing, which was discontinued in 1960, and 4 in Womens Ice Hockey, which started in 2001 and has very few good teams. In fact, in it’s 13 year history, only 3 different teams have won championships.

    Congrats Auburn,
Obviously Tiger University covers returning the football after a missed field goal in FOOTBALL 101…while BAMA was looking up at the live version on the GIANT TV like turkeys in the rain…drowning! By the way, Don’t you think that a game of this significance would have been booth reviewed? Excessive celebration could have been called but it wasn’t…so stop crying and deal with it…Saban lost this game not stepping or lack of stepping out of bounds. Saban should have kicked the field goal to go up by 10 late in the game instead of going for it on 4 and 1. DUH!!!!!

  72. bralinshan says: Dec 2, 2013 8:39 PM

Alabama’s academics have risen tremendously in the last decade. Both for athletes and for the student body in general. The success of the football team has skyrocketed applications and many are now from the Northeast, leading to a much more selective admissions process.
The weather and general living conditions in Tuscaloosa make it a pretty impressive destination.
Saban has also driven academics within the football team to unprecedented levels, now #2 behind Vanderbilt in SEC academics. There have been numerous All-Academic awards on the football team and 10 that played this year have already graduated! All 10 are enrolled in graduate school and they include AJ McCarron and CJ Moseley…the two All American football players. Make no mistake, Alabama football players go to class and they graduate.
By the way, this site posts a “movement” by a lunatic fringe as an example of Alabama fans in general and it’s disgraceful. Most of those on the supposed petition never went to the school…way to fan flames and get the wrong opinion out about Alabama fans. And I can promise you that if a football player had double flipped off a crowd…there would have been immediate suspensions and hell to pay.

What are you blathering about? My dad’s family goes back generations in Alabama, and though he relocated to Florida and had his family here, we were reared on the Tide. I went to Mizzou because it was the best school for my major. Yes, I’m proud and happy for the Tigers’ success, but I have never claimed to be a Missouri football fan. My only teams are Alabama and the Pittsburgh Steelers, which I’ve followed for 35 years. Any notion that I’d ever support another team was conjured in your little pea brain.

I didn’t see Davis step out of bounds, but even if he had … it doesn’t matter. The game is over, and there’s no going back. Time after time we’ve seen teams screwed by unquestionably bad calls. But the final whistle has blown and that’s the end of the story. Do you actually expecct the NCAA to put those two teams on the field to play an overtime? Please stop this foolishness.

Whether it’s your sports teams or life in general, most people lose more than they win in this world. Even the most successful teams are also-rans most seasons. As you age, you’ll suffer physical and emotional losses, business setbacks, the deaths of your loved ones. Learn to accept defeat with dignity or life is going to take some mighty big bites out of you.

No disrespect to war eagle they have a fine team but for my tigers to play in the national championship we needed to take bama down. I’ve seen the replays I don’t think he was out of bounds. I do think they should of reviewed it but hey I’m a Missouri fan our history is filled with bad calls by refs costing us big games ( colorado 5th down, Nebraska kick ball). I hope you do enjoy ur second home team making a run at the sec title. I know u don’t claim em but as a graduate of our fine journalism school black and gold is in ur color scheme somewhere.

“Sports in general? really? is it that bad in Alabama that your ‘life revolves around losing a football game’ …. that you make yourself believe that your Alabama football team is really that important in the grand scheme of things?”

Apparently so, as an Alabama football fan shot and killed a fellow Tide fan for not taking the loss to Auburn seriously. In fact, the the other fan (along with others) were actually ‘joking about the loss,’ when the ‘sick bitch’ pulled a gun and shot her dead!

Cut and paste the following CBS link:
    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/alabama-fan-killed-over-football-game-victims-sister-says/

Apparently, winning IS everything for Alabama fans. This is totally pathetic!!!

‘Bama fans say: “If you can’t beat ‘em, shoot ‘em!” And to those who will say that this is an ‘isolated incident’, I will say that it’s a fact that this valuable southern-style life-lesson is taught in your schools on the ‘one’ day everyone in Alabama actually goes to school.

    BAHAHAHA!!!…SEC-ya! SEC-ya! SEC-ya! Bye!
ROLL TURDS (proudly borrowed from another anti-’Bama fan)!

  80. powercorrupts2 says: Dec 3, 2013 3:12 AM

    @packerbadger
You are correct that Wisconsin was robbed by the refs of a win over Arizona State. They had the ball right by the goal line at the end of the game and should have been able to kick an easy field goal that would have had the difficulty of an extra point try. They have a reasonable kicker who had already kicked a 34 yarder in the game. But the refs let the clock run out by not placing the ball down for a kick. After the game the refs were disciplined for their behavior but the 32 to 30 score was allowed to stand.
And your nationally ranked team did lose its last game as did Alabama. However, Alabama lost to the 4th ranked team in the polls in a very hostile enviroment at an away game, but Wisconsin lost at home to a 6-5 unranked team that had lost most of its best players to transfer, had 10 less scholarship players, and a bowl ban. Are you sure that some of your reaction to the behavior of the Alabama fans following their team’s loss isn’t due to unresolved emotions you have concerning your team’s loss?

I can’t believe how stupid some people are that they think a petition signed by a few hundred or even thousand people or someone getting shot represents an entire fanbase. How many dopey college kids do you think signed that petition, whether or not they actually care of it.

People get shot over athletic events. People get shot over Chicken McNuggets. It’s stupid and senseless, but it happens. But none of these things are representative of an entire fan base- with one exception.

The rudeness and surliness of Philadelphia fans are more representative of their fan base than the civil ones. And I’m not even talking about the extreme ones that barf on kids and punch out ladies.

  83. sssjim7 says: Dec 3, 2013 9:49 AM

lol… this is almost as funny as Auburn fans thinking they should be playing in the NC game. Auburn should have 3 losses… they lost to Georgia – it took a miracle play at the end to save them there, and nobody in their right mind believes they are a better team than Alabama, either.

But they won and that is what matters. Now we will watch the SEC title game between the two teams that did what needed to be done on the field and won their divisions. Enough of this begging for second chance stuff… the game is over.

  84. joker202012 says: Dec 3, 2013 11:46 AM

When other teams win more it is still not enough because an SEC team with losses still deserves it more? Yes I am laughing at you not with you.

  92. Deb says: Dec 3, 2013 4:24 PM

A lot of people here are being kind of silly. You’ve got some silly people who can’t cope with a loss and have the bizarre notion they can petition their way into an overtime. You’ve got some silly bigoted people who want to believe a few nuts are indicative of an entire fanbase millions strong. You’ve got some silly fools who enjoy “laughing at you not with you” because they think discussions of strength of schedule are indicative of an inability to accept that our teams can lose.

No, boscoesworld. Strength of schedule has always been a discussion in college football–and since it will play into the committee decisions on playoff participants, it will be even more hotly discussed in the future.

Right now, three SEC teams sit in the #3, 4, and 5 spots in the BCS rankings. I doubt FSU’s status will change. But if Ohio State loses Saturday–which is possible as much as you seem unable to fathom that, in fact, Ohio State CAN lose and NOT be in the NCG–one of the those SEC teams will be playing for the title.

Yes, I am laughing at you, not with you.

    ==================================
That last statement needs a little bit of qualification. The average defensive rank of teams that FSU played was 63rd, not including Bethune-Cookman. They’ve beaten only 1 team that is presently ranked. They’ll probably beat Duke, who is also ranked, who has an SOS similar to FSU’s. Sadly, FSU has the weakest strength of schedule of any team in the Top 20.

So we know that FSU has one big win against Clemson, they play subpar defensive teams, and have a weak schedule. They may be the best team in the country, but right now, while rated #1, they’ve only proven to that they are better than #13. Just facts.

  99. Mr. Wright 212 says: Dec 3, 2013 6:24 PM

Cut the nonsense. Watch the team. Miss me with SOS and rankings. Anyone with an agenda can massage the numbers to suit their agenda.

Greene, Benjamin, Shaw, O’Leary, Freeman, Wilder, Williams are too many people to account for. No team’s secondary has enough elite players to cover all of them. Not even UF — and theirs is the only one that is legitimately good and was healthy — and their two top guys got toasted.

    Just stop.

  100. frank booth says: Dec 3, 2013 6:37 PM

Right. So you ignore the numbers to suit your agenda, just in the manner that you want your quarterback to be innocent in order to suit your agenda.

The replay official and his crew shall review every play of a game. He may stop a game at any time before the ball is next legally put in play (Exception: Rule 12-3-5-c) whenever he believes that: 1. There is reasonable evidence to believe an error was made in the initial on-field ruling. 2. The play is reviewable. 3. The outcome of a review would have a direct, competitive impact on the game. That’s copied and pasted from the NCAA football rules downloaded directly from the NCAA website.

JJ – question – are all of these Cry-baby Alabama fans giving you a paycheck? You’d be like Johnny M. getting paid for autographs. Ha, Ha! Honestly, this is the 3rd article that many of the public have read – and the 3rd time we’re writing the SAME thing – if you look at the photo shown here and the real video – you’ll clearly see that Davis’s foot was ‘in the air’ – not out-of-bounds. If you see even a better video played 100s of times, not only was his foot in-bounds – but the official was 5 yds. from the play. (I viewed that video 15 times). Finally had Saban made an intelligent coaching decision – he would have just ‘played out to OT’ – and not have someone try for a 57 yd. FG (probably done successfully by 1% of all kickers in CFB). Let’s face reality JJ and all of the Alabama Cry-babies – Saban ‘Blew-it’ and also your Cry-baby petition IS A JOKE.

The Bama fans commenting here have universally dismissed the petition, acknowledged that Auburn won the game fair and square, and said they wish the handful–and it is just a handful among the millions in Alabama’s fanbase–of people whining about whether Davis stepped out of bounds would just let it go.

Obviously, you aren’t a regular on this site, have no idea what has been posted here or what the fans here have said. You were just looking for an opportunity to bash Bama fans. Well, you’ve done that. I’m sure you feel like a Big Man. Congrats.

So, your opening comments – my being illiterate or stupid – sound like mudballs thrown at some of us during our Jr. high years… I think I’ ve been around the block doing sports journalism many more years since you were in Jr. high.
As for me slamming the Alabama fans – no I’m NOT on an ego trip – will refer you back to MANY of the 120 blogs written in this article – many call the fans – Cry-babies. Plus how many fan-bases have written Petitions – You said in the beginning of my article that I talk about the Petition? Better go back to my article – Nothing was written by myself about ‘petitions’ (you must have been reading an article by someone else?)
Alabama just hasn’t seen too many losses. Well putting things into reality – IN THE END – ALL TEAMS LOSE. As for Davis claimed as OUT OF BOUNDS. Still NO CHANGE – check the picture & video again – you’ll see the majority here unanimously say that he was ‘in-bounds’ (even many Alabama fans – admit ‘he was in-bounds’)
As for myself writing 2 days after game – ‘so what’ so did many others (check dates) many of them are writing about OTHER games as well – Alabama vs. Auburn wasn’t the only game played that day. Finally – I may have been one of a few of Saban’s critics for making his coaching error for the 57 yd. FG attempt. What would you have done Coach Deb? How many successful 57 yd FGs have you witnessed. Case dismissed.

If you babies want to blame someone, blame Saban. The game was going into overtime until he cried for a clock review. He got it then blew it. He had a kid kick a field goal he was never going to make, and then the All Lard team was on the field blocking for this fruitless try. Sometimes when you gamble you lose. this time you lose.

  126. wb364 says: Jan 6, 2014 8:38 PM

Alabama is just arrogant. They haven’t lost enough, so they’re full of themselves and always expect to win. And I mean, seriously! Sometimes, Alabama is so full of themselves and just want to win that they don’t think about losing. Nick Saban probably didn’t consider not making that field goal. Everyone could see Davis, and it was obvious what would happen: kiss, miss, catch, run, touchdown. And just for the record, the picture that those lunatics are using is useless; neither of Davis’s feet are on the ground. Alabama fans that posted that petition, you’re just big wannabees and are jealous that you lost. I did watch the replay, and I see where you thought he stepped out of bounds. But if we watched the same video, I would also like to point out that at that point, Chris’s feet were not in view. Therefore, you have no proof. [banging gavel] Chris Davis is innocent of placing even his pinkie toe out of bounds, as are all the officials that were present at the Iron Bowl.
