Big Ten reprimands Ohio State’s Marcus Hall for obscene gesture

Marcus Hall The Bird

The Big Ten conference has issued a public reprimand to Ohio State offensive lineman Marcus Hall for obscene gestures he made to the Michigan Stadium crowd after being ejected during the first half of the No. 2 Buckeyes’ 42-41 win over the Wolverines this past Saturday.

The conference said that Hall violated its sportsmanship policy.

Both Hall and kick returnerĀ Dontre Wilson were ejected for fighting (along with Michigan linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone) in the second quarter of the game, but Hall threw more fuel on the fire when he raised the middle fingers of both hands to the crowd on his way to the tunnel.

Hall later apologized for his actions via his Twitter account.

Buckeye coaches were also reprimanded for not properly escorting Hall out of the stadium.

Despite the reprimand and the ejections, both Hall and Wilson have not been suspended by the conference for Saturday’s Big Ten title matchup against No. 9 Michigan State. Urban Meyer has also said he will not hold the players out of the game with the Spartans.

Of course they are playing. They ran some extra gassers.

  2. spunhead73 says: Dec 2, 2013 8:41 PM

Typical thugs at OSU,and of course Urban Liar won’t do anything to them but slap them on the wrist. What a POS coach.

  3. ohioguy614 says: Dec 2, 2013 8:48 PM

Florida State’s qb may be charged with rape, and people are up in arms about tempers flaring in a rivalry game? Really? Get over it. This is such a NON-STORY!

  4. thefiesty1 says: Dec 2, 2013 8:49 PM

If it wasn’t for the leaders/legends game this week, he would have been suspended. Should be in jail for coming off the bench and assaulting the UM players.

  5. cubano76 says: Dec 2, 2013 8:50 PM

    That’ll teach him!

  6. classyjacklambert says: Dec 2, 2013 8:54 PM

wtf is a written reprimand? A bite with no teeth?

  7. noffy32 says: Dec 2, 2013 8:58 PM

@Ohioguy614. There’s evidence on tape of you’re moron players fighting and flipping the bird. Winston not so much…speculation yes. OSU will complain Saturday once they lose to Michigan State.

  8. bralinshan says: Dec 2, 2013 8:59 PM

So the Big 10 says “You guys were very bad, don’t let it happen again…or…we’ll call you very bad a second time.”

By calling them very bad, the Big 10 really laid down the hammer. Don’t ever confuse the Big 10 with some rogue conference that doesn’t enforce discipline….

The Big 10 is not the type of conference that would delay suspensions so that football players could play in a “big” game right? Nope, not the Big 10. They are all about integrity and academics! (Puke)

To all Big 10 fans (Ohio St. primarily): Don’t you EVER accuse the SEC, or ANY conference, of being shady and interested only in athletics. There is nothing worse than self-righteous blowhards who break all the integrity rules while trying to act like they are above it all.
The Big 10 is EXACTLY who we all KNEW they were. Before all is said and done, Urban Meyer will introduce the Big 10 to an even lower bar, because that’s who he is too.

  9. philliesblow says: Dec 2, 2013 9:02 PM

When it comes to dishing out discipline to O$U or Michigan, Delaney has onions the size of dust mites. No way was he going to make these players sit out against MSU. He wants O$U at full strength to give them a better chance to grab that big BCS cash.

  10. BrownsTown says: Dec 2, 2013 9:06 PM

Hall said it was consensual, so the Big Ten blindly took him at his word and didn’t take any action. The fans were asking for it and deserved it.

  11. tigersfandan says: Dec 2, 2013 9:07 PM

    What a meaningful punishment.

  12. watchfullhose says: Dec 2, 2013 9:07 PM

At least his father didn’t shop him to the highest bidder.

  13. midwestmd says: Dec 2, 2013 9:07 PM

Class act and way to represent your school and team. Reprimand = nothing. Way to hold the Big 10 to a higher standard Delaney. No one expected Hernandez’s former coach to do the right thing. Blue showed up strong and played a great game. One play away from destroying another undefeated OSU season.

  14. auburntigers34 says: Dec 2, 2013 9:17 PM

Delany and the Big 10 deserve each other. He acts like he and his conference are above it all, but he’s just an arrogant sleaze.

  15. mauldawg says: Dec 2, 2013 9:20 PM

Just goes to show you how big a piece of crap UM really is. Delaney is no better. OSU should be proud of the scum bag coach they hired. He has never change since his Florida days. Once a scum bag always a scum bag. I hope MSU kicks the living hell out of the new thug U. UM you are a dirt bag.

  16. cowpiesnotcowboys says: Dec 2, 2013 9:32 PM

    Stay classy OSU.

  17. DicksSportingWoods says: Dec 2, 2013 9:33 PM

Yeah, they should get the “death penalty” over this. Calm down people. I can’t speak for Hall but it looks like he’s just saying they are #2.

  18. 4buckiz says: Dec 2, 2013 9:45 PM

I’m obviously biased but Meyer has been no nonsense since arriving at Osu. Make a mistake and you’re suspended – hyde, roby, two freshman during the summer but this is the wrong decision. Dontre should not be suspended, he was surrounded by half their kick team and had his helmet ripped off. Kicked out yes suspended no. But hall came off the bench and threw a punch he should be suspended even though we need him. This is big ten protecting their own as far as I’m concerned.

  19. cbass59 says: Dec 2, 2013 9:50 PM

Les Miles let a rapist who broke his probation by sucker punching a guy and laughing about it back on the team with ZERO punishment this season.

  20. treysdown says: Dec 2, 2013 10:11 PM

I love how all the attention of this incident is on Ohio State’s end. When it was Michigan players who clearly instigated it by ganging up on Dontre Wilson after he returned a kick. Nothing is ever mentioned of all the players who surrounded him and ripped off his helmet while he was trying to get up from the return.

  21. jrs45 says: Dec 2, 2013 10:44 PM

    Who cares……..

  22. auburntigers34 says: Dec 2, 2013 10:44 PM

    cbass59,

Les Miles and his “team vote” on punishment for Jeremy Hill was pathetic too. I’m not sure if there was anything that Slive could do about it, since it was an off field incident.

Delany had no problem overriding MSU’s decision not to suspend William Gholston. I wonder what makes this situation any different?

It’s almost as pathetic as him fighting to put off the suspensions of the Tattoo Five until after the Sugar Bowl…..only to later proclaim that he would’ve acted differently if he’d had all of the information that he needed at the time.

    Delany is a clown.

  23. jamesfield74 says: Dec 2, 2013 10:46 PM

Right as rain Trey. Typical OSU hatred overshadowing any clear view. Wilson was wrong for throwing the haymaker but I would have done the same. Dude ripped off his facemask, unfortunately Dontrell hit the wrong guy.

  24. morlandou says: Dec 2, 2013 10:51 PM

For everyone complaining… Grow a pair. This isn’t a baking contest. You probably think everyone should get a trophy…

  25. hehateme1 says: Dec 2, 2013 11:04 PM

Urbans a joke and classless. These are the same type of thugs he recruited at Florida.

  26. morlandou says: Dec 2, 2013 11:29 PM

hehateme1. Weird math… Hall is a Senior and UM has been there 2 years….tell me how he recruited him? To everyone hating… The same logic applies to you.

  27. ursuline86 says: Dec 2, 2013 11:36 PM

All the Michigan fans are just upset that Brady JOKE went for 2 because he knew his defense could not get a stop and his kicker sucks! Urban Meyer is the best coach in the country with the longest winning streak. Besides, that fat backup linebacker from Michigan started the whole thing. OSU lost 2 significant players and still won the game. 9 out of the last 10 wins against that team from up north sure doesn’t sound like much of a rivalry anymore…

  28. epannell32 says: Dec 2, 2013 11:47 PM

Doesn’t matter FSU is going to smash OSU.

  29. goodfieldnohit says: Dec 3, 2013 12:27 AM

But if Johnny Manziel rubs his fingers together, you want to crucify him.

  30. mkoogs says: Dec 3, 2013 7:59 AM

The league should have reprimanded the refs for allowing 8 Michigan players to hover over Wilson, pull off his helmet and start the fight. Had they stepped in the whole thing could have been avoided.

  31. dkhhuey says: Dec 3, 2013 8:17 AM

I’m trying to not be a Buckeye homer here but W. T. F.??? EIGHT players from UM surround Dontre Wilson, barely let him up off the ground, then start pushing him around, and then #34 from UM sucker punches him, then a dude rips his helmet off his head while still being surrounded by 8 UM players. Of course his teammates are going to jump into the pile to defend him. With the video clearly showing all of this, every headline I’ve seen does nothing but implicate OSU and blame them for every aspect of what happened. Not ONE article that I can find addresses the fact that it was the UM players that started this entire brawl!!!

Am I happy it happened – NO! Am I happy with the idiotic actions of Marcus Hall as he left – NO. But the constant omission of any mention of UM players initiation of the entire event is mind boggling! Even in this article, both Buckeye players names are bolded while the UM player name appears in parens as if to say in passing – oh yeah, there was somebody from UM that played a small, insignificant role in all this – maybe.

  32. bralinshan says: Dec 3, 2013 9:29 AM

Marcus Hall’s actions AFTER he left the playing field speak volumes. That double bird salute should have led to at least a one game suspension.
This is part of the reason why football players at football factories act like fools. There are never consequences for their actions. Everything is swept under the rug for another time.
And, make no mistake…nobody sweeps for garbage under the rug than Urban Meyer.

  33. mediocrebob says: Dec 3, 2013 9:59 AM

Shocking that Meyer wouldn’t sit either of these guys…very shocking.

  34. peopletrains says: Dec 3, 2013 11:32 AM

If Meyer didn’t hold out players for shooting people while at UF I doubt he’d sit a couple a guy for flashing a couple of middle fingers. Urban does what’s best for Urban.

  35. peopletrains says: Dec 3, 2013 11:36 AM

None of this will matter after the Spartans pound the Buckeyes.

  36. sssjim7 says: Dec 3, 2013 11:52 AM

Flipping someone off is not a crime… if it were, half the drivers in the US would be in jail now…

Some really dumb posters on the boards today…

  37. sovereen says: Dec 3, 2013 1:41 PM

A reprimand. Boy, the Big Ten is just piling on now. What they didn’t release is that he is on double secret probation now.

  38. Deb says: Dec 3, 2013 4:06 PM

  39. dg0122 says: Dec 3, 2013 5:06 PM

woody would apologize…that he didnt have 3 middle fingers to shoot at the michigan crowd

  40. mediocrebob says: Dec 3, 2013 6:26 PM

Anyone who uses cUM’s new found “discipline” with examples of Hyde is way off. Hyde sat against the weakest part of the weak schedule. And what happens when he gets his first PT against Texas A&M …uhh I mean FLORIDA A&M? Home crowd gives him a standing ovation. What a great message cUM and the buckeye faithful sent to Hyde. ‘Its ok to hit a female. You’re a great running back’.

As far as Delaney goes, he’s DYING for the big ten to have some sort of success. The conference is at an all time low and doesn’t seem to be improving. He has to have the buckeyes full strength. I’m also enjoying all the posts about Les Miles and his shenanigans. This article has nothing to do with that clown.

Living in Columbus, I find it funny how obsessed everyone around here is with accusing SEC players, coaches and fans of their troubles while they wear their scarlet and grey glasses and continue to think that they’re the only program in the country.

  41. mediocrebob says: Dec 3, 2013 6:28 PM

And anyone condoning Hall’s actions Saturday are completely out of touch with reality. I don’t blame anyone on the brawl. That’s just emotions flaring in a great rivalry game. But at some point, players have to be held accountable for crap like what Hall did.

  42. desal2ds says: Dec 4, 2013 12:08 AM

Ohioguy614 Typical response from a Ohio fan. But not only did he run from the sideline to get involved in a fight that was not his to begin with but he also left the field classless. No discipline on that team. You will meet your maker in NC game thus continuing the argument for SEC fans that one loss team belongs over undefeated Big Ten. Thereby embarrassing the Big Ten yet again

  43. pinchegringo12 says: Dec 4, 2013 12:24 AM

Great examples to their university & fans, coach and all….they must be proud and wont gave an excuse after sparty whips ‘em
