Florida prosecutor: Football schedule won’t affect Winston investigation

The prosecutor investigating Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston for an alleged sexual assault said on Monday that he intends to be thorough in his process and will not let the football schedule or other time-sensitive matters like the Heisman Trophy vote dictate when his inquiry comes to a close.

The comments from State Attorney Willie Meggs appeared to come in response to those made by Winston’s attorney, Tim Jensen, last week. Jensen said he wanted Meggs to speed the process up since it could affect Florida State’s national title hopes and Winston’s Heisman candidacy.

Meggs dismissed those concerns.

“We’re not basing what we are doing on a football schedule or anyone else’s calendar,” Meggs said. “We’re moving as rapidly as we can.”

Good for Meggs. The idea that something as superfluous as a football game or a trophy should influence the timetable of a criminal investigation is preposterous and shows how out-of-whack priorities can be for some people.
