Report: Wake targeting BGSU’s Clawson, Ball State’s Lembo

Bowling Green’s romp over unbeaten Northern Illinois has already cost the conference millions in BCS money. In the end, it could prove costly for the winning team on the sidelines as well.

A source has confirmed to ESPN.com‘s Brett McMurphy that Wake Forest has targeted a pair of MAC head coaches to fill its vacancy: BGSU’s Dave Clawson and Ball State’s Pete Lembo. The latter has already interviewed for the opening, while the former is expected to do so in short order.

McMurphy reported that a decision from Wake Forest on a permanent replacement for the retired Jim Grobe could come as early as Sunday, presumably after interviewing Clawson today.

Clawson has been with the Falcons for five years and led the football program to its first conference championship since 1992 Friday night in Detroit. In his third season with the Cardinals, Lembo has BSU in bowl games in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in school history.

Prior to Bowling Green’s stunner in the MAC title game, it was reported that Lembo was the likely front-runner for the Wake job.
