Florida State, Auburn headed to BCS championship game

BcS

It’s the end of an era.

The very last BCS rankings were revealed on Sunday and, as expected, the championship game will be played between No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 Auburn. The Seminoles secured their berth this past Saturday with a win over Duke while Auburn did so in the SEC championship game Saturday night.

It’s FSU’s fourth BCS title game appearance and first since 2000. It’s Auburn’s second appearance in the past four seasons.

Alabama finished third in the rankings and will be heading to the Sugar Bowl to take on Oklahoma. Michigan State and Stanford finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and will face each other in the Rose Bowl. Baylor placed sixth and will take on No. 15 UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. No. 7 Ohio State, which just missed out on the title game, will go to the Orange Bowl as a consolation and take on No. 12 Clemson.

The SEC led the way with four teams ranked in the top 10 of the final BCS standings. Here’s the top 10 plus the five BCS bowl matchups to be played in January:

1. Florida State, .996

2. Auburn, .964

3. Alabama, .906

4. Michigan State, .860

5. Stanford, .819

6. Baylor, .772

7. Ohio State, .771

8. Missouri, .726

9. South Carolina, .715

10. Oregon, .581

BCS National Title Game – No. 1 Florida State vs. No. 2 Auburn
Sugar Bowl – No. 3 Alabama vs. No. 11 Oklahoma
Rose Bowl – No. 5 Stanford vs. No. 4 Michigan State
Fiesta Bowl – No. 6 Baylor vs. No. 15 UCF
Orange Bowl – No. 12 Clemson vs. No. 7 Ohio State

Stupid match up in Orange Bowl. Clemson will lose another by 60. OSU should be playing Alabama in the Sugar. THAT would be a great game.

Alabama might as well play Southern Mississippi.

Can’t wait to see Oklahoma get blown out of another BCS game. Yawn.

  4. bralinshan says: Dec 8, 2013 8:58 PM

People have very short memories…Auburn is certainly a very good team and I don’t believe anyone would argue it.
But, if not for an absolute prayer answered against GA, they aren’t in this NC game and would not have been in the SEC title game.
Alabama also had 120 more yards and had Auburn on the rope most of the 4th quarter. Give Auburn credit for finding a way, but this whole thing about now being “unstoppable” is over the top and inaccurate.
Plus, Auburns defense is simply bad. Look at their numbers and you’ll see they have a tough time against both the run and the pass.
FSU has more athletes, more experience, and a month to prepare and I believe that they’ll win this game reasonably easy…
    45-28…

  5. normtide says: Dec 8, 2013 8:59 PM

And that’s why you join the SEC. You get the perks of playing against best.

I’d also like to see OSU-BAma in the Sugar. I thought that was happening until I woke up this morning.

  7. lbroberts123 says: Dec 8, 2013 9:05 PM

@bralinshan, it’s easy to look amazing when you have the 61st toughest schedule. Easy to pad the stats and rack up the points. This game is going to be closer than all of the experts will predict, and Auburn has a serious chance to win that game.

  8. thefiesty1 says: Dec 8, 2013 9:08 PM

OU beating Okie State was a good thing. But NOT to get another BCS game.

  9. spunhead73 says: Dec 8, 2013 9:11 PM

Why isn’t Ohio State playing FSU? Oh,that’s right, they suck and got beat by MSU. Hahahahahahahahhahahhahahahaha. Overrated!!!!

    Oregon vs Alabama should’ve happened.

  11. jdillydawg says: Dec 8, 2013 9:14 PM

Can someone explain how OU gets into a BCS Bowl Game with two losses and not being ranked in the Top 10? Missouri, South Carolina and Oregon are all more deserving I would say.

If Ok. State had won yesterday (and the result of the Baylor game was the same), would OU still have gone to a BCS bowl over 1 loss Baylor?

How does one know? Who makes the call? Why is the BCS so confusing?

    Who’s on first?

  12. jagtiger says: Dec 8, 2013 9:17 PM

FSU is just another ACC team. Looking good playing in a weak football conference. Ohio state revisited?

  13. frug says: Dec 8, 2013 9:19 PM

Not that anyone cares, but just out this what the top bowls might look like if the new playoff was in effect this year (note that I assuming that the Peach and Fiesta Bowls were being used for the semifinals and the committee seeded the playoffs using the BCS standings)

    Peach Bowl
    FSU vs. MSU

    Fiesta Bowl
    Auburn vs. ‘Bama

    Rose Bowl
    Stanford vs. tOSU

    Sugar Bowl
    Baylor vs. Missouri

    Orange Bowl
    Clemson vs. USCe

    Cotton Bowl
    Oregon vs. UCF

(I will say it is possible, and perhaps even likely, that the committee would flip Missouri and South Carolina to avoid a rematch in the Orange Bowl, but they have said publicly that avoiding rematches won’t be a priority and the Sugar Bowl is entitled to the top ranked available SEC team, in this case Missouri)

  14. sportsinhd says: Dec 8, 2013 9:21 PM

It should be Michigan State in the championship game. All of their wins have been by ten points or more and they have the number one defense in the country.

  15. liverpoolred04 says: Dec 8, 2013 9:23 PM

    @bralinshan

2010…remember? Auburn had a lot of close calls, no team that wins the SEC doesn’t have luck on its side, that’s the SEC, it’s tough. Auburn gave up a lot of points in 2010, and were suppose to play a team in Oregon that had more “athletes”. Just having Athletes don’t necessarily win you games.

  16. Deb says: Dec 8, 2013 9:25 PM

I’m just thrilled we’re going to the Sugar Bowl! And thrilled we’re #3.

As for opponents … looking forward to facing Stoops. But my choice would have been Ohio State or Oregon.

Not sure how these things are decided. Back in the day, the Pac-12 and B1G champs met in the Rose Bowl, and that still seems to be the case. The SEC champ got the Sugar Bowl. And since Auburn has the title game, as the next highest-ranking SEC team, apparently that’s why Bama is going to New Orleans. But it would make more sense for Bama to play the higher-ranked Ohio State or Oregon than Oklahoma.

  17. Steve A says: Dec 8, 2013 9:31 PM

@jdillydawg Mizzou and South Carolina could not be selected for a BCS game. Each conference is allowed a maximum of 2 teams in the BCS bowls. Auburn is obviously one, for both being in the Championship game and for winning the SEC. Alabama also automatically qualified by finishing in the top 4 of the BCS standings. That locked out any other SEC team from being selected.

Sugar Bowl has a tie in with the Big 12 starting next year so they decided to suck up and pick a Big 12 team this year. Politics, not football, rule the day.

  19. fsu01 says: Dec 8, 2013 9:32 PM

Excited to finally see my favorite team back in the title game. Look forward to a great game. Good luck to Auburn as well. Should be a good one. Will get a gauge for FSU really is. For the first time in a long time FSU has not dropped that bone-headed game to a team they have no business losing to (BC was close though). Now are rewarded for it by playing a very tough Auburn team (yes I realize it took a miracle to beat Georgia and Alabama, but they were in both of those games to the point where the miracle tipped it their way). As far as FSU being “just and ACC team,” maybe they will get blown out as you suggest jagtiger, but if they don’t I would expect that you would be back on here to admit you are wrong at that point right?

  20. buckeye1nation says: Dec 8, 2013 9:36 PM

    @deb–
Its a selection order. Since the Orange and Sugar lost their Conference Champs to the NCG they get to pick first of the available teams. Orange chose first, since FSU is higher ranked. They still keep the Conference tie ins, hence Bama in the Sugar and Clemson in the Orange. Fiesta has a tie in with the Big 12 Champ, so Baylor goes there. It really only came down to 2 teams being picked (since Rose has B1G and Pac 12 Champs), Ohio State and OU. Fiesta got the last pick, which is why they got UCF.

  21. afrancis55 says: Dec 8, 2013 9:40 PM

    Bama 41 OU 13

    OSU 56 Clemson 31

    MSU 20 Stanford 17

    BOOK IT, FOLKS!!

  22. Deb says: Dec 8, 2013 9:45 PM

    @bralinshan …

No team is unstoppable–as the Patriots discovered in Super Bowl XLII. And believe me, as a Bama fan, I am not forgetting for an instant that Auburn won its last two games through serendipity. But when you have a good team and a good coach and everything seems to break your way at the right moment … well … the Tigers might just be a team of destiny … if you believe in that sort of thing :)

  23. halbert53 says: Dec 8, 2013 9:46 PM

Match ups supposedly based on TV and hotel/ticket considerations and then there is the 2 per conference limit for BCS bowls. And there is a rotation among bowls to pick teams. Missouri and USCe left out because of 2 team rule, Oregon left out because of distance.

Process of picking BCS bowl teams needs overhaul. Not 100% convinced UCF should be in BCS bowl but vs. Baylor out west shows no regard for their fans. UCF vs Clemson in Orange makes more sense.

Bama vs tOSU in Sugar makes more sense.

Baylor vs Missouri (or even Oregon) makes more sense.

As usual fans get deprived of the games they want to see.

  24. Deb says: Dec 8, 2013 9:49 PM

    @buckeye1nation …

Thank you. Sure do wish we could have 8- or 12-team playoffs as easy to track as the NFL’s.

  25. bralinshan says: Dec 8, 2013 10:24 PM

I find it humorous that people compare FSU to Oregon. FSU is an SEC team that is loaded with NFL players…playing in the ACC.
Oregon was severely undersized against Auburn’s two fronts. FSU is HUGE upfront and they can all move on both sides of the ball.
Auburn will turn into a pumpkin on Jan. 6…
And for those that believe that FSU didn’t play a tough schedule? First, I believe that every team should play one heavyweight outside of their conference. Ohio St. not only plays in a garbage league, they refuse to schedule anybody outside of it.
FSU had West Virginia scheduled for their 11th game and they scheduled it 4 years ago when WV was good. WV pulled out of that game in the offseason and FSU scrambled to find ANYBODY who might play them….they found Idaho and they were lucky to find anyone that late with commitments already in place. And, they play Florida, who is almost always a power and was #3 in the nation just last year. They went to #3 Clemson, and destroyed them in their building. Don’t be shocked if Clemson beats OSU by the way, because OSU has not seen real athletes all year.
FSU did not have a great schedule but that was due to some factors outside of their control like FLA sucking and WV canceling.
FSU is going to supply some Grade A lumber to that Auburn backside and there will be no “hail Mary, look what I found” in that game like the GA game.

    bralinshan,

They’ll learn. That 2010 Auburn team was better with a better QB and barely beat Oregon. I have respect for what Auburn has done, but I suggest you Auburn and SEC fans better get up to speed on what Mr. Fisher has been cooking since before he took over for Bobby Bowden. NFL talent up and down the roster.

  29. Deb says: Dec 8, 2013 11:37 PM

Hey, it’s all good for me. If Auburn wins, the SEC keeps its streak alive. If Auburn loses … well, Bama didn’t break the streak. And the champ is still a Southern team–better yet, a Florida team–and not one of those B1G snots that think they’re better than everyone else.

  30. realfootballfan says: Dec 8, 2013 11:43 PM

Yea, I’m not getting into the slamming of Auburn because my sister went to that school, and I let it play out on the field. However, when I see statements like FSU is another Oregon or they couldn’t compete in the SEC, it makes you wonder if people are watching these teams play or going on what the commentators tell them. FSU right now is as good as USC during their Pete Carroll run and Miami 10 years ago, which is to say they could obviously compete with anyone as those teams regularly beat all takers.

  31. tendigitpoet says: Dec 9, 2013 1:21 AM

Snotty behavior isn’t just confined to B1G teams; plenty of ‘Bama and other SEC fans behave the same way. If Florida State wins, that’s for FSU and the ACC; not for the good of all of Dixieland. And…if FSU wins it ‘Bama will indeed be responsible for breaking the SEC streak due to Nick Saban kicking that ball into the end zone instead of flinging a Hail Mary and going for a higher-percentage outcome.

  32. fmc651 says: Dec 9, 2013 2:22 AM

They wouldn’t get 12 against MSU and MSU would put up at least 42 on them. Way to go $ECheat, whine, cry and bribe your way into another title game. FSU gonna put up 70 on them. FSU 70, Auburn 17.

There is no way MSU was going to somehow leap into the NC game. I don’t disagree that MSU could compete and potentially beat either of the teams in the NC but that much of a leap was just not in the cards.

Cry me a river. Maybe MSU shouldn’t have lost to ND. Whine, cry and bribe our way into another title game? I don’t think so. AU defeated the #1 and #5 teams in the country in consecutive weeks. 40. packergator says: Dec 9, 2013 10:31 AM

I’m a big SEC fan, but something tells me this is the year that the BCS streak ends. Auburn has run over teams unprepared for its offense, but title games – especially with a month to prepare – are about matchups, athleticism, and balance. I thought Alabama would win big last year because they were a total athletic mismatch against Notre Dame. This year? Not so much. Auburn’s played tougher competition, but FSU is at least as athletic and, as long as they can find ways to slow down that Auburn running game, more balanced on offense and defense. Jameis Winston and those big FSU WRs, for example, will be a nightmare against Auburn’s undersized secondary. FSU also has a strong front seven and one of the best secondaries in FBS.

  41. kastout11 says: Dec 9, 2013 10:58 AM

Hopefully Braxton Miller will learn how to throw the ball this offseason. If he could have completed a few passes, they would have beaten Michigan State. I do not like either team, but it was a great game to watch. I hope Miller does not think he is ready for the NFL. In college you can have success with your QB running the ball, but that will not work in the NFL. I am a PSU fan and do not want any part of him next year, but I think he needs work on his passing before he thinks about jumping up to the next level.

  42. Deb says: Dec 9, 2013 10:59 AM

    @tendigitpoet …

Believe me, I’m not trying to coopt FSU into the SEC. We know the ACC is not the SEC. Trust me.

And it’s nice to see you grasp that no matter what happens in this title game, FSU will not have beaten Alabama.

  43. pinchegringo12 says: Dec 9, 2013 11:04 AM

Pulling for auburn and think SEC experience prevails over athletes.
But should indeed be a good game (even comments show that) and thats what its all about.
Baylor and UCF, meh though might get lucky with a good game for the 1500 tuning in. Gaylor didnt impress at end though banged up (3-3 at half vs mediocre texas, though they turned up in 2nd half, we will see).
OU, donkey punched by A&M last year (and texas this) and poor BCS history not a direct factor (except coaching, though bob is generally solid, so that stigma sticks with him)….see this one getting out of hand and one of Stoops brothers heads exploding. If lose, will be interested if any more cracks against SEC next year.

I agree with what halbert said…these bowl matchups are gosh awful and the in the end the fans are screwed…

how in the world can UCF, from Orlando Florida…Orlando….everyone knows where that is, in the middle of the freaking Florida , 250 miles away from Miami…..How can they be sent all the way to Phoenix? Im not a UCF fan, but they are a top 10 university in enrollment and they would have sold 40k plus tickets….so stupid of ESPN and the orange bowl to put Ohio state in the game….tOsu should have been sent to New Orleans, to take a beating from the Crimson Tide much worse than what Sparty did to them.

Speaking of the sugar bowl….Alabama is a no brainer…if you ask me, they should be in Pasadena to face Florida St, but everyone should thank Nick Saban for that..but to put Oklahoma in a BCS bowl, OU?…GTFOH….but then again, Oregon, who everyone thinks deserved that spot, has played like garbage down the stretch and you have to wonder how they will even play in the Alamo Bowl, since their players have said it was national championship game or nothing.

I think the Rose Bowl with Stanford vs Michigan State will be old school, tighten your chin strap real man football….no spread, no misdirection, no hurry up offense…just two old school teams that are going to line up and run the football.

I think the SEC’s streak ends here…Florida St is absolutely the best team Auburn will see this season with the size of Alabama and the speed of an Oregon or Baylor….Auburn is worthy of the appearance because they did beat Alabama on the scoreboard, but of course, when Auburn losses, SEC fan will cry and moan with “well, they didnt play Alabama”….

  48. jdillydawg says: Dec 9, 2013 12:31 PM

I learned a whole lot about this BCS system works from all the comments, here. Thanks folks!

I also learned why it’s going away. Some silly rules it has in picking who gets to go where.

That said, this will be a great opportunity for Baylor to get experience at this level on their way to the NC next year!

    Sure, a guy can dream…

As for Auburn/FSU, I think FSU looks unstoppable. But call me crazy, when you go from zero to hero like Auburn did this year, win two games in absolutely unbelievable fashion, you got some good karma or something working on your side. I’m going with Auburn on this one.

Hold my calls the first week of January, I’m gonna be a little tied up…

  49. 8to80texansblog says: Dec 9, 2013 1:14 PM

I think that FSU is the more complete team here. I worry about Auburn’s defense in this game a lot.

But the one team that pushed FSU a little was BC because of their power running game. Well nobody runs the ball like Auburn… nobody.

Plus FSU hasn’t really been tested at all this year. Sure they beat some highly ranked teams but the games were never really close. The only negative to that is that FSU has never been down in the trenches in an all out battle like Auburn has.

When you’re Mike Tyson and you knock everybody out in 1 punch, how will you react if you get punched in the face… hard?

If FSU gets up big early, it may be over early. But IF Auburn keeps it close late, my money would be on Auburn to win a close shootout.

  50. normtide says: Dec 9, 2013 1:30 PM

Auburn is as talented as FSU. Maybe more. If you look back, I told everyone they would be a force early in the year. FSU hasn’t been tested. Their schedule matches up with osu’s. Auburn has played top teams. Auburn also has a pass rush, something FSU hasn’t seen this year.

The BCS was better then the prior system. The playoff will have controversy. Especially for those who think the SEC will be held back by it. The SEC would have two teams in this year. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  51. Deb says: Dec 9, 2013 2:02 PM

    @v2the4 …

If Auburn loses, I won’t moan and cry that FSU didn’t play Bama. Was only slapping back at tendigitpoet for being a total [word too unladylike to post, so I’ll just say “jackass”] in response to my previous post. It was FSU fans who were saying their team was an SEC team playing in the ACC. I was joking with them good-naturedly when he came on being a complete ass, slamming the SEC and Alabama. There was no call for that whatsoever.

But if FSU wins, the SEC streak ends, and FSU will be the clear title holder. However, I will be glad that Alabama didn’t end the streak by losing in the title game. And that will be the case no matter how much tendigitpoet wants to try changing it up. Whatever poor decisions Nick Saban made in the Iron Bowl, he certainly didn’t play to lose. Moron (the self-proclaimed poet, not you).

  52. packergator says: Dec 9, 2013 2:15 PM

Sounds like the consensus is for a high-scoring title game, but these games have a way of defying expectations. Anybody remember 2008 Florida-Oklahoma?

With a month for prep you can scheme to take away a lot of what your opponent likes to do; then it’s about execution and finding different guys to step up and make plays.

  53. pastabelly says: Dec 9, 2013 3:58 PM

The new system benefits the SEC as they will most likely get two of the four spots in the game. I’d rather see one each from four of the five big conferences (SEC, ACC, PAC#, Big 10, and Big 12).

For this year, I’m just happy that OSU is on the outside looking in. Looking forward to FSU-Auburn.

Go whine and cry how american the $ECheat conference is and bribe an official or two to get your way. What do $ECheat players do once football season is over? Since they really don’t go to school, do the college backers send them on trips or just buy them lots of video games and coloring books?

For the most part BCS worked itself out, but there were some bad years mixed in such as Auburn not getting in a few years back. What I like about the new system coming up is that it is also a throwback to the pre-BCS era other than the playoffs. What I mean is that the bowls will be set up much like they were prior to the BCS. Traditional bowl match-ups coming back. I will not say anything about the Auburn-FSU game. No need to you can not talk your team into a national championship, but one thing that sticks out to me is how much improved both teams are compared to last year. Auburn last year would not have been anywhere close to Auburn this year. And despite losing 6 coaches and watching 11 players get drafted (including their QB) this year’s FSU team would beat last year’s FSU team by double-digits.

Unless you know of a bowl game I don’t, AU and Wisconsin have only played each other 3 times going back to 1931 and the record is 1-1-1. I suppose you are counting the 1931 tie game as a “win” for the Badgers?

The last time the two teams played was in 2006 so your statement is relevant how????

Although Alabama has won championships in other sports, as a Floridian, I have no idea what Alabamians do after football season. Nor do I care. Football is my passion, and it’s a year-round pursuit. I’ll enjoy the rest of the season, even though neither the Tide nor the Steelers will compete for a title, then begin the Off Season: The Combine, the Draft, free agency, National Signing Day, OTAs, Camp, Preseason. A football fan’s fun never ends.

Since I lead a full life, one sport is enough–though I’m looking forward to the Winter Olympics. And I don’t need to fill any empty places by raging about other people’s teams, conferences, states, or regions like a dog obsessed with demolishing a squeak toy. Poor thing.

In the Words of Mike Tyson.. “Everybody come in the ring w/ a Plan. Until they get punched in the mouth.” Let the pundits tell it. We should be 4-8. Shoulda lost to GA.. Didn’t happen. Funny how people 4get we were CRUSHING them the entire game, let off the gas they game back… And we still won. Alabama, GOD’s GIFT to football was suppose to do it…. Rolled them Up too. BTW, they were the #1 team in the country. And they ain’t a Fluke. 300 yrds rushing. Mizzu #5 in the nation 7days later. Was suppose to Bring WAR, to the Eagle. Show em who the real Tigers are. How’d that work out. To the tune of, 550 yards rushing 17 point win. I laugh when one says “they gave up 40 points…” And forget to somehow Mention, “they Scored 60″ lol. And These teams are suppose to Havethe beat Run defenses in the Nation. With the added wrinkle that Damien Craig, FSU’s and Winston QB coach, is Now a member of his Alma Mata’s coaching staff. Slight inside track on Jimbos thought process. Pre-season they handed out 2 invite to The Big Dance in Alabama and Oregon… With FSU and OSU toeing the line as the next favorites. Didn’t work so well Did America! All I’m Sayn is it is EASY Planning The Perfect Wedding if Everything Goes AS PLANNED! But what ABOUT the PARTY CRASHERS… Didn’t PLAN for THEM. And we didn’t Come to Be a BRIDEs MAID either! WAR DAMN EAGLE

And how many Alabumkins will be in those? I’m guessing ZERO! Wisconsin has had the likes of Eric Heiden, members of the “Miracle on Ice” hockey team, Dan Jansen, and countless others in the winter olympics; not to mention the other countless Big 10 athletes that will represent us. I hope you have fun cheering for all those Wisconsin and Big 10 athletes and laying claim to them when we win medals. Many members of the Big 10 will be representing us; how many $ECheat folks will be there?

Did you really just throw out your past winter Olympic participants as some sort of badge of honor in a CFB bulletin board?

He did. If the benzos don’t settle him down, they’re going to try shock therapy. It’s scary to watch someone completely unravel on a football blog.

Packer- why aren’t you posting on winter sports no one watches talk? Maybe you can regale them with your banter about a UW curler. This is about college football, Wisconsin fans need not talk

Did that make sense to you when you typed it?

Our team is playing in a bowl game just like your $ECheat team. Our football players are getting a much superior education compared to the ged equivalent the $ECheat players get; if they get one at all. Your players that don’t go pro will be working for our football graduates. Hopefully, they’ll treat them like they do in the south….crappy working conditions and crappy pay and able to fire them for any reason.
