War Damn Sparty: Mich. St. upsets Buckeyes, sends Auburn to BCS title game

Michigan State AP

All the campaigning, all the stumping can cease.  And Auburn, direct your thanks and/or alcoholic beverages to the general direction of East Lansing.

Ohio State’s 24-game winning streak?  Laying in tatters on the Lucas Oil Stadium turf.  Ohio State’s spot in the BCS title game?  Gone, thanks to a Michigan State team that simply refused to cower in the face of the mighty Buckeyes, with the Spartans pulling away late for a 34-24 win and the Big Ten title.

Both Ohio State finish the 2013 season at 12-1, but are headed in much different directions.

Next up for Sparty is a New Year’s Day date in Pasadena against Pac-12 champion Stanford in the 100th edition of the Rose Bowl.  For the Buckeyes?  A tentative date in the Orange Bowl, likely against Clemson.

Sending the Spartans to their first Rose Bowl in 26 years was a game that featured three very distinct runs.  MSU jumped out to a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter, only to see the Buckeyes roar back with 24 straight over the next 20 minutes or so to take both the lead and momentum.  MSU, however, ripped off the final 17 points to send OSU to its first loss of the Urban Meyer era.

Ohio State had a chance late when, trailing by three with just under six minutes remaining, a blocked punt gave them possession in MSU territory.  A fourth-down stop by the stingy Spartan defense handed the ball back to the MSU offense, which put the final dagger in OSU’s season with a 61-yard drive that was capped by Jeremy Langford‘s 26-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes remaining.

Connor Cook, who went 24-40 for 304 yards and three touchdowns, was named the Championship Game MVP.

While not yet officially official, the OSU loss means that Auburn, coming off a three-win season that saw it lose every SEC game it played, will play Florida State for the BCS title in, oddly enough, Pasadena.  The Seminoles, currently installed as a 10-point title-game favorite, was ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press preseason poll; not only were the Tigers unranked, they didn’t receive a single vote.

Great game for MSU. They were the better team tonight if not all year. OSU was bottled up and forced to throw at times and couldn’t make it happen.

Congrats to Auburn and getting a path to represent the SEC in the national championship game!

Congrats to Michigan State and their fans, first Rose Bowl in 26 years. You’ll be America’s team for ensuring the frauds were kept out.

As to Ohio State and their fans. Isn’t this a good thing? What do you possibly gain from getting humiliated in the national title game? Go play Oregon at the Orange Bowl, you could maybe beat them and earn a little respect for yourselves.

OSU would have given FSU or Auburn fits, but couldn’t get past a D better than those two.

  14. detectivejimmymcnulty says: Dec 8, 2013 12:36 AM

For the first time in years I don’t think the best CFB team is in the SEC. Giving FSU over a month to prepare for Auburn’s offense can’t be overlooked. FSU is more traditional as far as line ‘em up and run it down their throats (like Alabama), and they do that well. Of course that’s not even accounting for Winston. Auburn will learn about Florida State’s offense as well, and if Winston has that “Oh sh!t” look again it could be too late to compose himself. I don’t see it being crazy high scoring, but my first prediction is 27-26 FSU.

  15. 1990tiger says: Dec 8, 2013 12:36 AM

    Thank-you Spartans!! Great win tonight.

War Eagle!! I really like our chances against FSU.

  16. halbert53 says: Dec 8, 2013 12:37 AM

The Overrated State University chokes again. The SEC win streak in the NC game may end, but if it does it will be on the field where it should be decided against FSU.

  17. realfootballfan says: Dec 8, 2013 12:38 AM

What you SEC fans don’t realize is that our team was built in the juggernaut of your conference, Alabama’s, image. So go on with the big talking, our boys will settle this in between the lines in a month. I’m thinking we’re hoisting our 3rd crystal that night. Go Noles!!!!

  18. BrownsTown says: Dec 8, 2013 12:38 AM

The only thing that makes the loss more palatable are the constant reminders that it could be worse and I could be a conference-glomming fan of lesser programs that gets validation in life because a college in my general region of the country could possibly win a college football title.

Good game by MSU though. And at least a good guy like Dantonio did them in.

  19. detectivejimmymcnulty says: Dec 8, 2013 12:40 AM

Forgot to add that having Auburn in is good news to SEC haters. If it was FSU v. OSU you’d get to hear how the only reason 7 straight stopped was because no SEC team was there to defend the title. FSU is a tough team and is probably more SEC-ish on D than the actual SEC team.

I don’t seeing it being anywhere near that close of a game. I think AU will win by at least 14. I think Winston will have trouble with AU’s pass rush and FSU will not be able to stop the run.

Congrats to MSU! Wish we had a four team playoff to keep this going and happy that OSU didn’t waste our time in the NC. FSU won’t be able to stop the run 1990tiger? FSU and Alabama are built much the same way. I think FSU would rather play Auburn than Alabama. Auburn is very talented w/a big O-line but FSU has a tough D that will be up to the challenge of that run game.

Hey dtownbeatdown… I don’t know which “Michigan fans” you thought you were listening to, but THIS Michigan fan was THRILLED the other team from Michigan kicked the VASTLY overrated OSU team’s butts. As everyone knows, our Michigan team was one of the weakest in years, yet we put up 41 points against this Fugeyes team. I predicted MSU would win this game since they were the first team in the top 25 Urbie Cryer’s guys played. The top 25!!! They play no one and thump their chests like they’re an NFL team. This Michigan fan is GLAD MSU beat OSU. Actually I was THRILLED over it. Had OSU scheduled some competitive teams to play and won then maybe they would have deserved to be in the top 10, but they didn’t do that. No way that team was going to beat MSU’s Defense (and their Offense is pretty damn good, too). Sometimes “little brothers” grow up to be big and strong again like they were in the Duffy days. Had they beat Notre Lame we’d be talking about MSU in the title game, but I think they’ll be happy enough in the Rose Bowl. Let’s see how THEEEE OSU Fugeyes do against Clemson, another good team. I suspect they’ll be licking their wounds and rushing back to play Purdue and Indiana again….

  63. dkhhuey says: Dec 8, 2013 9:50 AM

Well – it has been a long time since we last lost – it still sucks!!! Good thing it doesn’t happen too often!

Tip of the hat to Sparty – they played a great game and the Buckeyes just couldn’t seem to get in gear.

  64. bigbuckeye76 says: Dec 8, 2013 10:10 AM

Simply put, this is almost the same OSU team that was 6-6 in 2011, only with even less talent on defense. The only difference is URB. This was not an exposure, this defense had trouble with Buffalo. This was an inevitability, I have never in 30 years been so “ok” with a loss. Sparty did us a favor….FSU could have passed for 800 yards against this team. URB has been patient with the Defensive side of the ball for long enough. I expect you will see a house cleaning very shortly.

  65. bigbuckeye76 says: Dec 8, 2013 10:11 AM

  67. sillec28 says: Dec 8, 2013 10:49 AM

Good news: OSU finally, for the first time in two years, played a decent team and showed us what we already knew – they were vastly overrated. Bad news: we won’t get to see FSU demolish OSU in the NC game. Somewhat good news: if any team can beat FSU this year (which is doubtful) it’s probably Auburn.

I didn’t. I was only laughing mildly. I didn’t have much left after watching the Gators ineptitude this year.

As an outside observer I say….WOW, the Buckeye hate is pathetic here. Grow up people! If you hate 18-19 year old kids playing football, I can’t imagine what you do to kittens.

First, Ohio State fans didn’t put OSU at #2, the voters did….coaches, and AP. Blame them if you think they were over rated you bunch of morons.

What most of you don’t realize is that all OSU fans I speak to were well aware that their defense wasn’t up to the standards they usually play. They knew that and were very realistic that Sparty could beat them if they came with their ‘A’ game, which they did. Hats off to the Spartans for a great game!

What makes me sick is seeing people spewing such hatred towards OSU and twisting things as if they felt they deserved a shot at the NC game. You might feel the same if your team ended up #2 on the last week of the polls. All schools play for ‘a chance’ at the NC game. So why wouldn’t they?

Regardless, OSU will end the BCS era with the most BCS games at 10, and so far the best BCS record at 6-3….hopefully 7-3. Plus, no matter how you look at it, winning 24 games in a row is extremely hard to do when everyone is coming at you full strength every week to take you down. If you can’t understand that and appreciate it, then you don’t deserve to post your hateful dribble on any chat board regarding college football.

These 18-19 year old “kids” you speak of, sure like commiting “adult” crimes. I lost respect for Ohio State when they didn’t suspend players for the actions they displayed vs. the Michigan Wolverines. To those that say Ohio State beat who they were matched up against for 24 straight games. Everyone knows that a good portion of match ups, the college itself controls. Ohio State ducked competition whenever it could. Not a doubt in my mind that FSU would have thoughly b1tch slapped Ohio State, just as would Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, LSU, and South Carolina. I also believe Georgia and Texas AM would have beaten Ohio State. Thanks MSU, for saving OSU the humilitation of a game against any top team in a BCS title game.

Let’s see MSU is not 12-1 after beating OSU. Does anyone remember who was the only team to beat MSU this year?

Wait, I remember, it was ND!

That’s the same ND team that played and beat #17 Arizona State. But wait, they also played #10 Oklahoma and #7 Stanford. They lost to both but were in both games with a chance to win. And then they also beat a resurgent USC team as well currently #28 in the AP.

So much for all the trollers that trashed ND’s strength of schedule!!!

LOL to harbourimages, a Michigan fan who has to get his kicks out of Michigan State beating OSU becuase Michigan cannot. Really funny.

Congrats to Spartan’s. Good luck against Stanford. Bring home a win in the rose bowl.

It’s not a crime to flip the bird, just rude and ignorant for which he was kicked out of the game along with the Michigan player. If you ever notice, these types of things happen at the beginnings of games when they are pumped up and too excited. These are ‘kids’ trying to grow up. Some of them just left home and this is all still new to them. Plus, you all act as if this is only an issue that happens at OSU. LOL, Did you want a trial, 1-5 years of hard labor?

Well – it has been a long time since we last lost – it still sucks!!! Good thing it doesn’t happen too often!

Tip of the hat to Sparty – they played a great game and the Buckeyes just couldn’t seem to get in gear.

Marcus Hall did not play in this game. So basically Meyer did suspend him for flipping the bird.

@wayne – I appreciate that! I am an OSU homer and at times I do go off once in a while at people who are attacking OSU unfairly! In the end, there is so much hate because they have been successful for quite a long period of time. If they weren’t – nobody would care enough to rip on them!!! The B1G Championship game – we spotted them 17 points, scored 24, then lost it again by giving up 17 points. The team played hard but in the end, our defense couldn’t play 60 minutes and gave up too many big plays! I love the direction we’re heading and look forward to the future years because of the possibilities!!!

dkhhuey….Totally agree with your post above. I look forward to the future.

We OSU fans (At least some of us) are like the who’s in whoville. Everyone thinks we will be boohooing because we lost to MSU but are puzzled when they hear the OH….IO cheer coming from the the fanbase in whoville……

    GO BUCKS!
