Les Miles on Texas: Let’s not kick my name around

Les Miles AP

Every coach with ay amount of success in the coaching game is likely to be asked at one point about the vacancy in Austin, Texas. That certain;y has been the case for a handful of SEC West coaches lately, including LSU head coach Les Miles.

Ross Dellenger, LSU beat reporter for The Baton Rouge/New Orleans Advocate, captured one of the latest noteworthy lines from the LSU head coach. Asked about the opening at Texas, Miles simply said “Oh please, let’s not kick my name around.”

Perhaps Miles had learned a lesson from the last time his name was being floated around as a potential candidate for another storied program. In 2010 there were talks that Miles was going to leave LSU for an opening at Michigan, just as Miles was preparing his Tigers for the SEC Championship game. The sequence of events was highlighted by an impromptu press conference only Miles could have had to refute a report suggesting he was going to leave LSU for Michigan just hours before the sEC Championship Game.

Miles is taking more of a preemptive strike to keep his name out of the rumor mill. Whether he is a wish list candidate for Texas or not remains to be seen for sure, but Miles does have experience in the Big 12. Before coaching at LSU Miles was the head coach at Oklahoma State.

It’s a shame Miles is not interested in the Texas position. Having him on his own show on the Longhorn Network would have done wonders for network subscriptions.

At the rate this is going I wouldn’t be surprised to hear gene chizik turn down the Texas job.

If Texas is interested in falling two games short of championship every year then Les Miles is the guy.

It would be interesting though. They are going to find out very quickly that going better than 10-2 is going to be a tough hire.

Les must like the grass at LSU better than the grass in Austin.

  7. raysfan1 says: Dec 16, 2013 10:01 PM

Yeah, Les Miles can’t coach. He only won a BCS championship in 2007…more recently than Texas last won one.

Are Texas fans not allowed to make jokes?

It may be my flu stupor or medicated psychosis or maybe even yet some senility, but I heard this latest from Baton Rouge and Austin….

Mrs. Miles purchased a home in the suburbs of Austin. Their daughter is now in Austin attending UT on a swimming scholarship and their son who is now a junior at University High and most recently in the Louisiana State championship game has been offered a scholarship to UT. Miles’ agent has been seen in Austin.

Les Miles has been meeting secretly with his agent and with a special emissary from the Longhorn boosters. So far, they have offered the largest contract ever for a college football coach. UT has promised to apply to the SEC for membership.

That is what I heard…I think?

Too funny… He’s pissed that his name want mentioned earlier.

You poor jilted self indulgent boy coach… Your feelings are hurt… Stay at LSU. You are the farthest thing from whom we need.

Were they joking? My apologies if so.

Texas history majors better start looking for a hot shot up and comer instead of these guys already in their own “storied” programs. Times have changed

The grass in Baton Rouge probably has some Cajun spices in it to enhance the flavor. The grass in Texas has an unpleasant taste from all the cow patties on top of it.

That’s hysterical! It’s like Les is saying “Don’t even go there.” Gee, I thought Texas could buy anyone they wanted

    Thanks for the recap.

Larry Bird ain’t walkin’ thru that door either.

Think Kevin must mean 2011, because LSU didn’t play in the SEC title game in 2010.

Texas wouldn’t want Les Miles anyway, I don’t think, so there’s no real story here. Les has fallen ass-backwards into the best job he’ll ever have, and I’m sure he’ll have to be run out of town before he goes anywhere. It would be awesome to see him on LHN, though….”run up and give them a big kiss on the mouth… IF you’re a girl.”

  21. sportsguygerald says: Dec 17, 2013 12:46 AM

Patterson who is the search committe doesn’t want an up and comer, he wants someone with extensive college experience. The job will require someone that’s a better politician than football coach, so whoever it is will have to bring in a strong staff, especially somebody that can coach QB’s. Whorns can offer Fort Knox, but whoever agrees to take it will damn sure earn it to turn that program around

  22. vandalcowboy says: Dec 17, 2013 12:58 AM

The key to success at UT is recruiting the best talent from inside Texas. You’d think that would be easy for the mighty UT, but now with 12 FBS schools in the state (including one from the SEC, no less) and OU and OKST stacked with Texans, they don’t automatically have their pick of the litter anymore. UT needs someone with extensive in-state recruiting experience, or short of that, a Saban-like pedegree. Given what the new AD has said they’re looking for, I think the best fit just might be Bob Stoops. Wouldn’t that be fun?

  23. normtide says: Dec 17, 2013 1:18 AM

Texas’ program has it’s own culture, just like any established program. They would do better to get a coach that embraces it, as opposed to trying to change it. They also need a coach that can be innovative enough to make the LHN an asset. If they hire someone just because he had success somewhere else, it will be a mistake. I haven’t read a story yet that highlights the attributes the next coach will need. They all go for the shock value. Bold print “Texas is hiring your favorite coach!”, “Texas to crush a bag of kittens”, “UT uses mirror to direct sunlight in a bid to melt polar ice caps”.

The longhorns better hire a coach that can rub elbows with donors, integrate the LHN, keep all the background voices telling the same story, etc.. And, maybe coach up some young men.

  24. normtide says: Dec 17, 2013 1:19 AM

    And recruit.

  27. alligatorsnapper says: Dec 17, 2013 8:54 AM

    dmcgrann:

Come on. We have the bearded Robertson rednecks from West Monroe, north Louisiana, the Swamp People, who regularly risk life and limb to catch alligators and live in the swamp, Cajun Justice running down anything and everything that moves, Cajun Pawn, who will buy anything, even live animals, and a huge amount of folks much less mainstream than those….Les Miles fits right in!

He might be from Ohio and trained under the legendary Bo Schembeckler, but he is Louisiana now. He loves crawfish etouffee. He loves the temperate climate.

Our grass tastes better. Our food tastes better. We don’t have regular temps above 100 F in summer. Les does not have to hob nob with politicians (who really wants to do that?) and Les can repel down our buildings.

Slam dunk. He stays put. LSU Baby!

    ROFL….

    Love the “Coach” reference!

The list of coaches that have told Texas no is getting a little embarrassing for the brass in Austin I think… When you already make $5MM a year… it’s no longer just about money…. the pressure at Texas will be immense and everyone knows it…

My money is still on Cutcliffe from Duke.

Really?…With the success that their football team had this year and their bid to build their football program I would think they would want to keep a coach that so far has shown more success than in prior years. I know money talks but I would like to think he would want to build on what he’s done this year….
