Long a favorite of the annual coaching carousel, Jon Gruden has seen his name attached to seemingly any and every opening at both the collegiate and professional levels since he stepped off the sidelines following the 2008 season. While he’s not yet pulled the trigger on a return, one of the plum jobs at the FBS level appears to have piqued his interest.
Citing what it calls a “high-level source,” Orangebloods.com is reporting that “Gruden is open to hearing from the Texas athletic department about its football head coaching vacancy.” The source told the website that the Longhorns job is one of the few positions at any level of football Gruden would consider.
There has been no contact between the former coach and the university, the report stated.
“It’s no secret that every major position that comes open stirs Gruden rumors. The reason why the talks never go anywhere is because there are definitely two, maybe three, situations he’s always said he would have to listen to,” the source told the Rivals.com site. “When Texas calls, you gotta listen.
“At some point, well, the bottom line is - there are only a few places where everything just fits.”
During the USC coaching search, to which his name was obviously attached. it was reported that Gruden is expected to either stay in the broadcast booth or return to coaching at the NFL level.
Gruden’s last coaching job came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, from which he was fired in January of 2009. His last job at the collegiate level? 1991, serving as the wide receivers coach at Pittsburgh.
