Texas A&M hands playcalling duties, OC job to Jake Spavital

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin announced on Wednesday that Aggeies co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital has been elevated to offensive coordinator and will take over play calling duties, effective immediately.

Spavital came to A&M this year after coaching two seasons at West Virginia. Just 28, he has already coached under some of the best offensive minds in football, including Sumlin, Dana Holgorsen, Kliff Kingsbury and Gus Malzahn. His most recent pupil was one Johnny Football.

It’s likely that the move to promote Spavital was made to prevent the talented young coach from being courted by schools — like Florida, for instance — in desperate need of offensive rejuvenation.

Spavital will get his first shot at playcalling when the Aggies take on Duke in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31.

The former OC/Play Caller, Clarence McKinney was terrible. Last Year they had Kingsbury calling plays. This year, they forgot how to run, and they have really good running backs.

I hope that Spav can bring a little creativity back to the offense in the bowl game, instead of 17 runs and 43 passes.

Lane Kiffin is available, for consultation if nothing else.

If his buddy Holgorsen doesn’t step it up next season at WVU. Oliver Luck is gonna come callin’ Spavital back to Morgantown for his first HC job in 2015. He does a great job with young QB’s.

Yeah, McKinney called some pretty awful games…. the LSU one comes to mind right away….

They ran the ball 18 times that game and only 6 carries for the RBs…. wtf??

But they were still a top 5 offense and you’d think changes would be on the defensive side. I think Snyder is a good coach but he didn’t exactly make lemonade out of the lemons he was given…

Last time we switched play callers for a bowl game, it worked out quite well… (see Cotton Bowl)
