Texas A&M hands playcalling duties, OC job to Jake Spavital

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin announced on Wednesday that Aggeies co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital has been elevated to offensive coordinator and will take over play calling duties, effective immediately.

Spavital came to A&M this year after coaching two seasons at West Virginia. Just 28, he has already coached under some of the best offensive minds in football, including Sumlin, Dana Holgorsen, Kliff Kingsbury and Gus Malzahn. His most recent pupil was one Johnny Football.

It’s likely that the move to promote Spavital was made to prevent the talented young coach from being courted by schools -- like Florida, for instance -- in desperate need of offensive rejuvenation.

Spavital will get his first shot at playcalling when the Aggies take on Duke in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31.
