Texas appoints 8-person committee for head coaching search

Texas Athletic Director AP

Texas took the next step toward replacing Mack Brown on Wednesday as the school announced that athletic director Steve Patterson has appointed an eight-member committee to handle the Longhorns’ coaching search.

According to ESPNTexas, seven of the eight members of the committee were involved in hiring Patterson.

The school is also bringing in Jed Hughes of search firm Korn Ferry to aid in the process.

No names have emerged as front runners in the Texas coaching lottery though, per tradition, Jon Gruden has been mentioned as a possibility (isn’t he always?).

Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated expects it to be a slow process, with the hire coming after Jan. 1.

In the meantime, with the search committee is in place, the speculation can really begin.

Will it be Gus or Jimbo?

  2. thefiesty1 says: Dec 18, 2013 5:39 PM

The only thing a committee is good for results in a Moose.

If Pete Thamel writes that he expects it to be a slow process, you can count on it not taking very long to find their guy. He’s a hack.

This process is going to drag out past December 30th.

That’s so funny. Everyone’s been speculating about the offers they’ve made so far, and Texas is like: We’re going to start looking now.

The Horns need a coach who is intelligent, innovative and inspirational. They need a coach who can recruit the state of Texas, a coach who can put points on the scoreboard….one who knows the Big 12 and has a proven record of success there…..forget Briles, Gundy, Malzahn, Graham, Fisher and yes even Gruden…..Texas needs The Pirate himself……Mike Leach.

  9. thefiesty1 says: Dec 18, 2013 7:06 PM

Just a question about this committee…are either or both Mack Brown and/or DeLoss Dodds included in the eight?

  10. sectexasaggies says: Dec 18, 2013 7:10 PM

We already know the name of the next Longhorns head coach. It’s “Not Nick Saban”. Whoever finally accepts, it’s not Nick Saban. Hahahahahaha

The arrogance of UT is amazing. They thought they could get anyone they wanted but none of the top notch coaches want the job. I’m sure Lane Kiffin would be interested.

In fairness we can’t be sure the Powers at UT thought they could get anyone … unless they were the guys posting on CFT all last week that THIS IS A DONE DEAL because Texas can afford to buy buy anyone ;)

  14. timh1955 says: Dec 18, 2013 8:26 PM

They couldn’t buy Saban as Alabama was willing to match or do better than anything UT did.

  15. longtallsam says: Dec 18, 2013 8:34 PM

An eight person committee…that’s a bad sign. They just it infinitely more difficult to lure a high profile coach away from his current job.

  16. sportsguy3434 says: Dec 18, 2013 8:34 PM

I am curious at the appointment. I guess they need help to filter applicants. Nine peoplr involved means there will be leaks probably.

Deb, inferred Texas arrogance probably comes from the posts and from listening to some of the radio in that area via the internet that seems to be the consensus.

  17. goodfieldnohit says: Dec 18, 2013 8:46 PM

“We hired you Steve, now step aside and let the big boys handle business now.”

Which begs the question, if Texas is the best golldarned job in the entire football universe, why do they have to moneywhip their potential candidates?

In my lifetime, Texas has never hired a marquee coach that was a marquee coach at the time he was hired.

DKR was a nobody who coached in Canada. Fred Akers was coach at Wyoming. They stole David McWilliams from a conference rival. Mackovic was fresh off a 6-5 at Illinois. Mack had 10 years at UNC and never won a conference title.

For the sake of argument I hope their boosters don’t follow the lead as some do in that they don’t pattern the guy they want to be a carbon copy of any former success that they’ve had in the past, i.e. Darryl Royal, Mack Brown, etc. Let the guy have his own success is what I’m tryin to say. So many times the boosters expect followers rather than leaders. Granted they all want winners but let the guy win with his style and not be a cookie cutter. I’ve seen so many examples of this done not only at Bama but at other schools and it’s not really fair to the new guy. Whether you agree or not, the boosters shouldn’t write the check just as the fans shouldn’t it should be up to the President of the University. As much as I value my friendship with some of the boosters at both Bama and LSU I’m forever remindin em of my postion when they ask if I still feel the way I do.

Each and everyone enjoy your Holidays and may they be good ones as well as safe ones.

  19. goodfieldnohit says: Dec 18, 2013 8:57 PM

And to add to my previous comment, the last time they hired a coach, they had a search comittee. For a week, the print media (that’s all we had back then), told us it was going to be Gary Barnett.

Then they actually hired Mack. They did ok on that I guess. They got a crystal football with him.

It will be interesting to see what level of disinformation is now given to the media, given that the Saban rumor blew up in their collective faces.

  20. goodfieldnohit says: Dec 18, 2013 8:58 PM

    Art Briles is my guess.

  21. Deb says: Dec 18, 2013 9:22 PM

    @sportsguy3434 …

Just having fun with some of the pro-Texas commenters here who kept insisting UT could yell “Jump” and any coach would respond with “How high?” ;) No matter how appealing the job might seem, it won’t appeal to everyone.

  26. Deb says: Dec 18, 2013 11:00 PM

I love Mike Leach as a choice because it would mean he’s more visible. You can never have too much Mike Leach :)

  27. iftheresahellbelow says: Dec 18, 2013 11:12 PM

The only thing the new UT coach needs to remember is the advice Lou Holtz, yes Lou Holtz, said Bear Bryant gave him when he was a young assistant coach. “Just win the damn game. When you are winning your enemies can’t touch you and when you are losing your friends can’t save you so just win the damn game.” That simple. All this talk about politics, LHN, being able to recruit kids from Texas, etc. is a bunch of garbage. Most people who make 5-10mil a year have a lot of pressure. Get over it. If you are a Texas fan, which I am not, do you care if it is a juco transfer, a Texas HS kid or some kid from Alaska if you are winning 11+ and playing for a championship. I doubt it. Who has time to watch practices on TV and who cares? Game time is all that matters. Problem #1, 8 person search committee. When you get 8 people in a room you can’t decide on where to go to lunch much less hire a coach. Step up Patterson, get a short list, vet them with the top brass, make a decision and earn that AD money. I hate to say it, but at this rate burnt orange is going to be more like burning tires.

  28. thehawg says: Dec 19, 2013 12:01 AM

Al Golden should be top canidate at university of Texas, great recruiter , great with media, loyal, did turn down University of Wisconsin, has orange ties.

  29. boomgrounder says: Dec 19, 2013 3:24 AM

It’s all a smokescreen to buy time and take pressure off the 2 guys that are candidates for the job, Fischer and Malzhan. 8 guys from Texas will eat a lot of steak, drink a lot of whiskey and smoke a lot of cigars between now and the National Championship Game. But they won’t name the HC of UT until after the game.

  30. drummerhoff says: Dec 19, 2013 8:15 AM

LHN should have a reality TV show modeled after “The Bachelor” to select the next football coach.

  31. stopthemadness101 says: Dec 19, 2013 11:26 AM

Instead of trying to jack the existing head coach from another program how bout you hire an up and coming coordinator? I think I can speak for the fans of all the schools with coaches being mentioned as Texas candidates when I say FVCK YOU TEXAS. Thanks for the extra stress. Hope whoever you pick fails miserably and your program burns in Orange hell for decades.

I agree with @goodfieldnohit. Texas doesn’t tend to hire the big name coach.

But wouldn’t Briles be a big name coach? Plus I think Briles might take issue with tearing down what he has built at Baylor…. Money cures a lot of those woes but I’m not sure he’ll be overly interested in Texas for that reason.

I’m still going with Cutcliffe as my predicition.

  34. cmonpos says: Dec 24, 2013 1:38 PM

They are gonna end up with POS, you watch!

No Saban, No Mack Brown; we are doomed.

I cant see anyone out there that’s gonna turn this program around in a hurry.

We need a no nonsense, Saban types; not the slick-willy-behind-the-scenes-too-good-to-be-true-Texas-cattle salesman!

    Good Luck Longhorn Nation
