Scheduling carousel: Virginia Tech & Mizzou on, Notre Dame off for Purdue

Notre Dame and Purdue will take a five-year hiatus after meeting in 2014, relieving some scheduling pressure for the Irish and allowing the Boilermakers to make some different plans down the road.

For Purdue, filling in the gaps has already begun. Purdue will play Virginia Tech in West Lafayette in 2015 and will head to Blacksburg in 2023, per a release.

A home-and-home series with Mizzou is still being finalized, though mid-September games are expected in Columbia in 2017 and West Lafayette in 2018.

These moves became a necessity with Notre Dame needing to squeeze five ACC games into its schedule per year and the Big Ten going to a nine-game conference slate. While it’s not as big a rivalry as Notre Dame-USC or Purdue-Indiana, the Irish and Boilermakers have played every year since 1946 and have met 84 times overall.

Notre Dame and Purdue will play again in 2020 and 2021, and in 2024-2026.
