UCLA’s leading tackler to miss Sun Bowl

When UCLA takes the field for its postseason game New Year’s Eve, it’ll do so without the services of one of its most productive players on the defensive side of the ball.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that linebacker Eric Kendricks will not play in the Sun Bowl matchup Dec. 31 against Virginia Tech. While Kendricks has suffered with kidney-area and shoulder issues this season, it’s an ankle injury that will keep him out of the season finale.

According to the Times, Kendricks underwent surgery Friday to repair the injured ankle. That injury has kept him from practicing since late last month.

Playing alongside All-American Anthony Barr, Kendricks led the Bruins in tackles this season with 106. The redshirt junior also totaled four tackles for loss and two sacks.

With Kendricks sidelined, the paper notes, the Times notes, freshman Isaako Savaiinaea has been taking the starter’s reps during practice.
