Report: Clay Helton to remain on USC staff

Los Angeles media outlets are reporting that USC offensive coordinator Clay Helton, who served as interim coach for the Trojans in their 45-20 Las Vegas Bowl win over Fresno State, will be retained on new coach Steve Sarkisian’s staff.

There’s no word yet on whether Helton will continue to run the offense or whether he will serve in a different role under Sarkisian, who has called plays for his Washington teams in the past.

Helton’s name had been bandied about as a possible replacement for Brent Pease at Florida, but that scenario appears to be unlikely at this point.

Helton has done a solid job since taking over as full-time offensive coordinator for Lane Kiffin. The Trojans have scored at least 40 points over three times with him calling the plays.

Don’t want Helton at UF , no offense to him. He might would have saved Myschamps job.

It’s not that, Helton does not want to go to UF and work for Muschamp. Who can blame him. It would essentially amount to a 1 year deal working for what is now a mid level SEC program that is the 4th best team in their own state behind FSU, UCF and Miami. UF lost 7 games in a row including home games to Vanderbilt and Ga Southern and they’ve lost to cross state border rival Georgia 3 years in a row. After all this they bring the HC Willie MuskRAT back for a 4th season after going 4-8. UF is preparing to become Tennessee, post Phil Fulmer. AD Jeremy Fowler can’t see that 2012 was a fluke season with a great defense where UF got every break humanly imaginable to prop up their record. They got TAMU in Johnny Football’s 1st ever game because a hurricane canceled his previous weeks game. If UF plays TAMU any other week of the season other than Johnny Football’s 1st ever game TAMU destroys them. They got USC without All Americans DE Clowney or RB Lattimore due to injuries. They survived another game against who Bowling Green was it? With a late 4th Qtr blocked punt for a TD. The point is the Gators weren’t very good in 2012 and it showed when Louisville and Teddy Bridgewater dominated them in the Sugar Bowl. They were no competition for a well coached team with a good QB. Muschamp will have a difficult time filling his OC job. If he was smart he would go the route of former Gator QB great and present Jacksonville University HC Kerwin Bell. Bell runs a modern version of Spurrier’s old Fun N’ Gun with a dual threat QB employed in the mix and he will create excitement with HS Coaches in FL who respect Bell as a former walk on at UF from Mayo, FL. He’s the perfect fit at the perfect time for the Gators and might be the only guy who can realistically save Muschamp’s job!

Only reason Muschamp not fired was because of large buyout. Key people on Urban Meyer’s staff like Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong left and UF was stupid enough to make Muschamp coach. The sooner Muschamp leaves the better off UF will be.

Is Muschamp the latest version of Galen Hall?

Good news. Helton was far better at running the offense than predictable Kiffin. Sarkisian would be smart to let Helton keep doing what he’s done well.

Was that English? “Don’t want Helton at UF , no offense to him.” Helton certainly had some “offense to him” running USC’s. Or did you mean Florida has no offense for Helton to run?

“He might would have saved Myschamps job.” Isn’t that contradictory to your first sentence? And I use the word sentence rather broadly in trying to describe the gibberish you wrote.

Your second post is much clearer. Apparently the coffee kicked in. It becomes clear you don’t like Muschamp, but why dump on Helton?

Wasn’t dumping on Helton. Good coach. And because he is good coach don’t want him going to UF to save Muschamp’s job.
