Reports: Jeff Monken expected to be named next Army coach

It appears that Urban Meyer doesn’t have to worry about losing yet another coordinator after all. tweeted Sunday afternoon that Georgia Southern head coach Jeff Monkenwill accept the Army head job.”  Shortly thereafter, Sal Interdonato of the Times Herald-Record tweeted that “Army [is] expected to name Georgia Southern’s Jeff Monken next head coach.”

As the two sides are apparently still working out contractual details, an official announcement from the service academy may not come until later in the week.

Monken, a cousin of Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken, has spent the past four seasons at Georgia Southern, leading the Eagles into the FCS playoffs his first three years with the program.  He has a connection to service academies as well, serving as an assistant at rival Navy from 2002-07.

In November of this year, Monken’s Eagles went into Gainesville and embarrassed Florida in a 26-20 win.  It was the first time in the 100-plus-year history of the program that Gators had lost to a team from the FCS level.

Along with Monken, Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ed Warinner was considered a favorite to land the job.  Warriner was an assistant at Army from 1987-99.

UPDATED 3:39 p.m. ET: Apparently, Monken’s expected hiring may have been a case of premature speculation based on a tweet from‘s Pete Thamel.

So, there’s that.  Stay tuned, I suppose.

I realize Monken is about fourteen years younger than Rich Ellerson, but — other than that — I don’t know if there’s a whole lot of difference between the two. Both are triple-option guys who had success in the FCS.

They saw what Paul Johnson did going from Ga So to Navy, so maybe they think they can re-create that success.
