Report: Justin Wilcox to reunite with Sarkisian at USC

The question of Justin Wilcox‘s coaching future will apparently be answered after Washington’s bowl game tonight, and will be answered the way most had expected.

Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com is reporting that the UW defensive coordinator is expected to fill the same role at USC.  An official announcement is not expected until after the Huskies’ Fight Hunger Bowl game against BYU Friday night.

Wilcox had served as Steve Sarkisian‘s coordinator at UW the past two seasons.  Earlier this month, Sarkisian was named as the Trojans’ head coach, and it was thought Wilcox would be one of the first assistant coaches to follow their boss to Los Angeles.

However, UW’s hiring of Chris Petersen added some drama to what normally would’ve been a cut-and-dry situation.  Wilcox had served as Petersen’s coordinator at Boise State from 2006-09, with the latter attempting a reunion of his own before Wilcox opted for the Trojans.

In between his time at Boise State and Washington, Wilcox served as the coordinator at Tennessee in 2010 and 2011.

Wilcox has a $1 million buy out in his contract. Chump change for USC I guess.

USC paid UW over 4 million in total buyouts, so essentially UW got a better coach (Peterson) and USC is paying his salary for first year . Thanks USC! Good luck with average Sark!

CouchCoach; remember the year before Sark got there? How soon they forget. Let’s see how Peterson’ gimmicks work in the Pac-12 on a consistent basis. Good luck with THAT? Happy New Year.

Another former Tennessee coach to USC. This one may work out better than the last one.

You and I could have coached the Huskies better than Ty Willingham at any point during his tenure at UW. That being said, Sark has the appreciation of Husky fans…along with some angst.

There will be applause and boo’s when he returns. Both are well deserved.

I don’t think Sark turns USC into P. Carrol’s USC.

Sark is a little bit better than a .500 coach. UW picks up a much better coach who can take them to the next level. UW wins and USC treads water.

Sark is a much more prolific coach thsn what his record is at UW. USC can recruit better players than any other school in CFB othervthan Alabama, and ‘bama’s recruiting power is short lived.

Not sure which coach you where referring to, but the last one that left SC did a pretty awesome job. The one before that one, not so good.

I hope Sark knows what he’s doing letting Clancy walk. New DC better have it going on.

I hate to see Coach Pendergast go too, but the truth of the matter is he does not recruit, and in the competitive market of CFB, the DC must recruit. Word on the street is he is going back to the NFL, and that’s true then it won’t affect USC.

Wilcox is a very good recruiter and has a mind for running a multinscheme defense. If you wayched last night’s UW game you would’ve seen what his defense can do. It’s similar to what Pendergast ran at SC, but without all the talent SC has.
    Fight on.

pdcooper08: The last Tennessee coach to go to USC was Lame Kiffin. You said he did a pretty awesome job. That is confusing since he was FIRED. When is the last time a coach did a pretty awesome job and got fired?

  11. pdcooper08 says: Dec 30, 2013 1:20 AM

Delashmit: I was referring to the coach after kiffin was fired. If you where unaware, coach O was a coach at UT as well and he did an outstanding job while leading the Trojans.

To Katman: I guess you make a good point here. I wasn’t even thinking about the recruiting aspect. Missing coach O and not bringing coach Tosh from UW, that really places the bulk of recruiting on Sark and Wilcox. Lets hope he brings in a few more solid recruiters with the last few spots he fills. As well, I did like what I saw the other night with the defensive play calling. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
