Report: Jets LB coach Brian VanGorder to become new Notre Dame DC

New York Jets v New England Patriots AP reported on Saturday that New York Jets linebacker coach Brian VanGorder is set to become the new defensive coordinator at Notre Dame.

He’ll replace Bob Diaco, who left the Irish to become the new head coach at Connecticut.

VanGorder was the Auburn defensive coordinator in 2012, when the Tigers struggled to a 3-9 record. Before that, he spent four seasons as the DC for the Atlanta Falcons.

He has some background with Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. He was on the same staff as Kelly from 1989-91 at Grand Valley State.

This guy hasn’t been good since he was at UGA, and that was back in 2003 if I remember right.

I wasn’t sorry to see him leave AU after one (disastrous) season.

Good hire. I wondered where he’d gone after he left the Falcons. He did more with less than any coordinator I can remember when he was there, and he was great when he was at Georgia with Mark Richt.

Auburn was stocked with talent when he was there, and his results weren’t great. Granted, Chizik had totally lost that team. But, I’m taking a wait and see approach to this hire.

Outside of that one year at Auburn he has been fantastic everywhere. He was my head coach at Wayne State. He is a disciplinarian and an awesome coach.

Will ND let him keep that shoe polished stache?

To judge an assistant coach’s value based on one season under a HC who lost the team is shortsighted & biased. Luckily coaching staffs don’t base their selection on what opposing fans think. I’ll judge him after he has something to judge at ND.

Auburn’s defense hasn’t been good in years, so I am going to go with his complete resume over a 1 year hiccup. Plus, working under Rex Ryan can’t be bad for anyone who wants to learn more about coaching defense.

Didn’t want it to sound like I was bashing him. But you have to note it. There was a lot of fan fare with his hire. Auburn has/had tons of talent. Their offensive style will handicap their defense, especially numbers wise.

I don’t see it as a bad hire, but being in this state, you couldn’t miss the results of that season. Also, I was the first to say that Chizik had completely lost all discipline on that team. They had to hire a security firm to enforce curfew. Strength coach was being ignored by players. The list is huge.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

I’ve always been a fan because the Falcons never gave him great talent to work with, and he was a magician having them top 10 every year. I think he’s good at defensive play calling, knowing when to call which play at the right time, something many defensive coordinators are not good at. I still think he should be a DC in the pros.

I’m sure he’s a very nice man, but I honestly think I could coach defense better than he can (despite the fact that I have never done it before, and have a graduate degree in Biology).
