Notre Dame is number one... in all-time winning percentage

The Fighting Irish are on top of the college football world once again, sort of. Notre Dame’s victory over Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl put the pressure on Michigan to stay in first place in terms of all-time winning percentage. With Michigan getting run over by Kansas State later in the day in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, the Irish moved past the Wolverines to take first place in all-time winning percentage by a narrow margin.

Break out the calculator because we are going deep past the decimal point in these calculations.

Notre Dame is now 874-305-42 all-time. That equates to a winning percentage of .7330057. Michigan drops to 910-321-36 for a winning percentage of .7324388. For those keeping score at home, or most notably in South Bend or Ann Arbor, that is a slight .0005669 in favor of the Irish.

The chase for the top spot in all-time winning percentage for Notre Dame has been a topic of discussion for a few years now. During the abysmal Rich Rodriguez era at Michigan, Notre Dame started to catch up to Michigan, even with mediocre seasons unfolding in South Bend. The Irish got closer with an undefeated regular season last season and finally passed the Wolverines with one more win than the Wolverines ended with this season.

The team next in line chasing Notre Dame and Michigan may surprise you. Boise State is third in all-time winning percentage with a .723 mark t stay ahead of Oklahoma, Ohio State, Alabama, USC and Nebraska.
