Oklahoma stunning Alabama at half in Sugar Bowl, 31-17

Trevor Knight Getty Images

Oklahoma certainly does not look like a double-digit underdog in the Sugar Bowl. The Sooners have more than held their own against Alabama in New Orleans tonight and reach the midway point leading the Crimson Tide, 31-17. You read that score correctly. Oklahoma is leading Alabama, a 15-point favorite, by 14 at the half. Considering Alabama has allowed 31 points in a game just five times since 2008, that is rather significant.

Alabama did open up the scoring early in the first quarter with a four-play drive covering 75 yards and ending with a TJ Yeldon touchdown run just under two minutes in to the game, but Oklahoma closed the half with a 24-10 run.

Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight threw three touchdowns in the first half to lead the Sooner charge. The first was to Lacoltan Bester for a 45-yard score to tie the game. Just minutes later the Tide re-gained the lead with a field goal, but Knight struck again with another touchdown pass inside the 10-yard line, this time to Jalen Saunders. Knight and Saunders hooked up again on a deep ball down the right sideline to give Oklahoma their first lead of the game, late in the half. The play was set up by a red zone turnover by Alabama, a Yeldon fumble as Alabama was knocking on the door step for another score.

A late interception tossed by AJ McCarron gave the Sooners time for one more score, and they acted quickly on it. Sterling Shepard took a misdirection wrap around down the right side of the field for a 13-yard touchdown run on the very next play.

Still plenty of football to be played of course, and if any team can manage to make some adjustments, you would think it will be Alabama, but now all of a sudden the tables have been turned. A game that was supposed to be one that saw Oklahoma struggle to keep up now sees Alabama looking to find a way to slow down the Sooners.

Never saw this coming. OU was tied as the biggest underdog in BCS bowl history coming into tonight’s game. Really impressed w/ Heupel’s offensive gameplan. The OU D has been impressive, too. Still a lot of football to be played…

  2. longtallsam says: Jan 2, 2014 10:23 PM

So much for all the people saying Alabama is still the 2nd best team in the country. It’s a shame they aren’t playing FSU…they would probably have 50 hung on them by now.

  3. dkhhuey says: Jan 2, 2014 10:23 PM

Boomer Sooner came to play tonight!!!

  4. the8man says: Jan 2, 2014 10:26 PM

The Football Gods reward the courageous. Stoops going for on 4 and 1 and converting with the game knotted at 17 took a bucket of guts and it fired up Sooner Nation.

If OU wins this game, that call will be remembered for eternity. No dog in this race, or horse in this fight, but nicely done. :)

Let me guess Bama fans, it’s the kickers fault right?

  6. villain612 says: Jan 2, 2014 10:26 PM

Nick Saban is currently taking volunteers if anyone has experience in kicking.

    Top 5 Preset SEC Excuses:
    5. Goonies on TV, distracting.
    4. Bad lighting.
    3. Bad Turf.
    2. OU uni’s too similar.
    1. Don’t care.

    It’s not “stunning” it’s “beating”.

Alabama fans having a hard time accepting Auburn wasn’t a fluke.

  8. bender4700 says: Jan 2, 2014 10:31 PM

The real pathetic thing is, Alabama will still be rated higher than several 1 loss teams.

  9. afrancis55 says: Jan 2, 2014 10:32 PM

Methinks Gus Malzahn has exposed Saban and has shown the country how to beat Alabama.

  10. musketmaniac says: Jan 2, 2014 10:34 PM

the underdog and the over could be a bcs theme this week. the rose, the fiesta, tonight and definitely Monday

  11. amosalanzostagg says: Jan 2, 2014 10:34 PM

    Bama Proud, no excuses.

    OU has come to play.

Bama needs to run the fricking ball and wear down the Sooners. Forget the three and four receiver sets.
Bama beat A&M earlier this year by long time consuming drive resulting in TD’s by running the ball
    down their throats.

Auburn may overtake us in the SEC West.

  12. liverpoolred04 says: Jan 2, 2014 10:35 PM

BTW, most SEC fans are pulling for Boomer, we all knew Bama was fraud, glad the Sooners are just exposing it further. REC can only buy you players.

  13. amosalanzostagg says: Jan 2, 2014 10:36 PM

    Not Auburn, A&M.

If A&M had any defense they would have killed us.

  14. bender4700 says: Jan 2, 2014 10:41 PM

This was supposed to be the “come back to earth” year for the SEC perception, but Ohio State couldn’t hold their end of the bargain. Still wish MSU hadn’t lost on a controversial call to ND.

Bama is a really good team, but they are not unbeatable. Neither is FSU. FSU could stumble very easily, but FSU is certainly of the most dominate teams in awhile. Just in how badly they beat everyone.

The SEC’s bowl season is more true to what they are. best conference, but beatable. Nebraska took down Georgia, LSU had a fight from Iowa, and A&M nearly lost to Duke.

    Exciting games.

  15. gamustangdude says: Jan 2, 2014 10:42 PM

Bama is being exposed? Only to people who hate Alabama. If that were the case then this is the real OU team, and OU has been doing this all year, which they haven’t. So lets just leave this as what it really is, OU is playing an exceptional half and Alabama isn’t. Nothing else is going on here.

OKLAHOMA 31 (end of 1st half)
    alabammers 17

…with ‘bama ‘MISSING a measly 27 yard FG’ as time ran-out (no surprise there…remembering the Iron Bowl massacre most fondly)! The tide looks just a bit ‘confused’ (not at all like the ‘potential title contender’ they still claim to be). “I hope the deer-piss wears-off quickly, fellas (as the short-term side-effects appear to be most devastating…especially when mixed with your moonshine).” Let’s hope the 2nd half is a little more challenging for Oklahoma (as the tide is starting to look ‘a lot’ like last year’s Notre Dame), or ESPN’s ratings will go down.

GREAT 1st Half, Oklahoma! Have a GREAT 2nd half! GO SOONERS!!!

    Roll TURDS Roll!!!

  17. tampajoey says: Jan 2, 2014 10:51 PM

    Alabama… Overrated.

    SEC… Overrated!

  18. BrownsTown says: Jan 2, 2014 10:54 PM

Oklahoma is playing like they’re the Utah Utes.

  19. huskerzfan says: Jan 2, 2014 11:02 PM

It is no longer a secret. Saban’s kryptonite is up tempo offenses.

No wonder he has spoken publicly about needing to change rules on up tempo offenses. His 300 pound DEs and 250 LBs become obsolete awfully quick against these kinds of offenses.

Game is far from over, but I didn’t see OU coming close to scoring 31 points, much less 31 in the first half.

  20. cowboys8819 says: Jan 2, 2014 11:06 PM

It won’t last long! We can’t have Alabama lose on national tv in a big bowl game!

  21. irishdodger says: Jan 2, 2014 11:13 PM

Tide has turned (pun intended). They obviously made adjustments. They’ll come back and win by 42.

  22. goodfieldnohit says: Jan 2, 2014 11:34 PM

There is no truth to the rumor that Bob Stoops is on the University of Texas’ hot list.

  23. bigugly2005 says: Jan 2, 2014 11:45 PM

DEB, where you at running your big fat SEC bull sh@t mouth? Bwahahahhahaha!!!!!!!

  24. irishdodger says: Jan 2, 2014 11:46 PM

Wow….I am stunned. That TD pass by Knight was phenomenal….kid held on to ball as long as he could til he found an open receiver…didn’t try to force it which usually leads to a pick.

  25. ttalarico says: Jan 2, 2014 11:47 PM

Let’s all cheer for the Alabama dynasty!!!

    Not happening.

  26. dkhhuey says: Jan 2, 2014 11:47 PM

Trevor is playing his ass off – seriously from 1st and 30 to a TD – wow

  27. babyfarkmcgeezax says: Jan 2, 2014 11:52 PM

SEC EXPOSED YET AGAIN! OVERRATED AS ALWAYS! Maybe for once SEC fans will realize that having one team win the national title doesn’t automatically make your entire conference the best, no matter how much ESPN talking heads try to drill that into everyone’s brains so they get good ratings.

Don’t be surprised if Crimson Joke fans pull out their usual “our team didn’t want to be here so even though we lost we’re still better” excuses like they did when Utah stomped their overrated SEC asses a few years ago. Where are those mythical invincible SEC defenses? Oh that’s right, they’re not tested by anyone respectable outside of the conference all season until the bowl games. Duke, of all teams, cut through SEC defense like butter and the Sooners are doing the same. Roll Tide… into Overrated Hell!!!

  28. bigugly2005 says: Jan 2, 2014 11:55 PM

As much as I HATE Alabama, that Henry kid is frickin’ incredible. Just a beast! Reminds me of AD.

  29. cowboys8819 says: Jan 2, 2014 11:57 PM

OU will choke! They are a 17 point dawg for a reason!

  30. ttalarico says: Jan 2, 2014 11:57 PM

    Henry is a ton!

  31. ttalarico says: Jan 2, 2014 11:59 PM

Even if Bama pulls this one out, they are no where close to the team that beat ND last year.

  32. thefiesty1 says: Jan 3, 2014 12:02 AM

Deb, what the hell is going on? It’s just Okiehoma.

  33. irishdodger says: Jan 3, 2014 12:06 AM

    Roll Tide?

  41. irishdodger says: Jan 3, 2014 12:21 AM

SEC, SEC, SEC, SEC, SEC, SEC!!!!!!!

Bob Stoops rumored to be in line for the Cleveland browns job. If so, that’s a helluva way to go out.

  42. bender4700 says: Jan 3, 2014 12:21 AM

    Nebraska (Big Ten) beats Georgia
    Oklahoma (Big XII) beats Alabama.

Can everyone go back to before ESPN snowed them all to help their ratings deal?

SEC is the best conference, but not by a huge amount. Respect what Saban has done, but THIS is what college football is about.

  46. bender4700 says: Jan 3, 2014 12:23 AM

    Dude. accidental onside kick!?!?!??!!

Love it. It’s as if God himself is calling plays against Bama.

  47. Professor Fate says: Jan 3, 2014 12:24 AM

Not even all of ESPN’s money and hype could save the Tide from being embarrassed by OU. Sweet.

  48. babyfarkmcgeezax says: Jan 3, 2014 12:24 AM

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Squib recovered by OU!! How much more of a joke can the SEC be when this travesty is their main “powerhouse”?

  49. v2the4 says: Jan 3, 2014 12:25 AM

I guess what former big 12 scrubs A&M and Mizzou did to the vaunted SEC defenses wasnt a fluke afterall….the Oklahoma Sooners, who got housed by Texas and Baylor this year, just took the vaunted Alabama Crimson Tide behind the woodshed and beat you SEC boys down..

wow..look at that…they even recover the swib quick..
congrats to Oklahoma and the Big 12 for that bigtime victory tonight.

  50. dkhhuey says: Jan 3, 2014 12:26 AM

Wow – another great game where both teams were playing hard! Congrats to Boomer Sooner – that was a tough game to come out with a win.

#27 from Bama is a freakin beast though… holy moly!

  51. v2the4 says: Jan 3, 2014 12:28 AM

on another note, I cant wait to hear what the paul finebaum show will be like on friday…I bet that chick Phyllis from birmingham is about ready to do something horrible right now….

  52. goodfieldnohit says: Jan 3, 2014 12:28 AM

  58. dcroz says: Jan 3, 2014 12:37 AM

Congratulations to the Oklahoma Sooners on their victory! You wanted it more, you were better prepared, and you were better coached.

But as far as all the haters claiming “SEC was exposed!”: You do realize that the SEC is still 5-2 in the bowl season with two more games to go, including the BCSNCG? Only two conferences can say they have a team playing Monday night…and that other one is 3-6 this postseason. The only thing “exposed” on here tonight is your ignorance.

  59. goodfieldnohit says: Jan 3, 2014 12:38 AM

Congratulations to OU. They earned it. They out hit and out executed Alabama.

And ukeone, don’t be ‘that guy.’

  62. powercorrupts2 says: Jan 3, 2014 1:01 AM

Yo, Deb! Where are ya? Did ya have a nervous breakdown or something? You’re lucky they didn’t lose by 3 touchdowns. The Sooners still had enough time on the clock to run in another one but showed them some mercy.
