Penn State coaching search kicks off with interview with Al Golden

While most of the big news in the world of coaching searches centers on the latest developments surround the Charlie Strong watch at Louisville and Texas, Penn State is moving forward with their search for a replacement for Bill O’Brien. Miami head coach Al Golden will reportedly get the first crack to make an impression with the Nittany Lions.

According to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com, Golden will meet with Penn State officials Saturday, a day after initially scheduled to meet about the open position. Snow in Pennsylvania on Friday altered travel arrangements for the two sides, forcing them to push the interview back to Saturday. Golden is considered one of the top candidates for the job but contrary to previous reports he has not been offered the job just yet.

Penn State was also rumored to prepared to interview Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin, but nothing on that front has been confirmed. Franklin, a Pennsylvania native, is coaching Vanderbilt in the BBVA Compass Bowl in North Carolina Saturday afternoon.

In the meantime, interim head coach Larry Johnson, one of the two holdovers on O’Brien’s staff form the Joe Paterno regime, has yet to interview for the positon, according to Bob Flounders of The Patriot News. On Friday, during a meeting and conference call with media, Johnson confirmed he would be interested in the position. The fact he has not interviewed for the job yet may not mean much. It is easier for Penn State to schedule a meeting with Johnson at more convenient times since he is located on the campus already. Making travel arrangements to coordinate interview times with other potential candidates puts these potential interviews on a different priority level.

That would be a slam dunk hire for Penn St. Especially if he can flip some of the recruits in that monster class he has coming to Miami. I hate Penn St but a big fan of Golden. It’s really a perfect match.

It’s never “old”. Tell that to the families and victims.

The next domino to fall if Golden takes the PSU job will be Schiano to Miami.

I think face21000x means the jokes are getting old not the situation. The jokes are disrespectful to the families.

If Golden doesn’t land the job, how awkward would it be for him to go back to Miami and act like nothing happened?

Penn State fans will only accept him if he can produce loud enough rhythmic slapping sounds

Golden moves around a lot. Does PSU want to take a risk with that?

I’d hire Jim Caldwell or Mike Munchak and hire the one who doesn’t get the HV job as associate HC.

Highly unlikely that he won’t bolt from that shithouse in Miami for a fat raise. Don’t worry, he’ll go home.

It is funny to see PSU fan get excited about this slick talking perennial .500 coach who really has done nothing. He routinely gets out coached. Don’t believe me PSU fan? Just axe any Miami fan, he looks the part but gets exposed while battling with bottom feeders. God help you if he drags his DC along with him. The UM fans (all 8 of them) are ready to go to D’nofrio’s house with pitchforks. It’s high comedy at the irrelevant and broke former football power. But yeah, Golden will be a hell of a hire.

Don’t get the appeal with this guy. He talks a good game, but he’s a mediocre coach. Before anyone brings up the “cloud” hanging over them, give me a break. The ACC isn’t exactly murderer’s row as far as the schedule goes. It’s no excuse for losses year in and year out to teams like Duke, Virginia for god sake, and the like. None. It’s just like what Kiffin was doing out in Southern California, and people making excuses for puzzling losses due to the scholarship restrictions. But hey, I hope he doesn’t get that job because FSU fans enjoy penciling in that win every year.

@realfootballfan: ACC is murderers row when your previous coaches “Coker” and “Shannohan” lost all contact with top Miami highschools letting 4 and 5 star talent leave for teams like fsu, Louisville, and uf to name a few. Al Golden has reastablished contact with those schools that’s why they have the 3rd ranked recruiting class right now. Also as far as fsu penciling in a win every year, thats fine because they have plenty of catching up to do. Miami is 32 and 27 all time against fsu and they have 5 National Championships compared to fsu’ 2.So suck it!!!

    kevinkgocanes,

Yea, that’s it. I’m glad you love Golden and hope he stays in Coral Gables. Like I said, we like penciling in the in every year.

Hope he’s prepared to deal with imbeciles like Anthony Lubrano and Franco Harris (and Franco’s JoePa cardboard cutouts).
