Report: Penn State sets interview with 49ers OC Greg Roman

James Franklin may be the presumptive frontrunner, and Penn State may have stated just a day ago that the search for a new head coach would come to an end in “a matter of days,” but the interview process is still ongoing in Happy Valley. Reportedly.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, CBSSports.com‘s Jason La Canfora tweeted Wednesday, has an interview set with the Nittany Lions in regards to their head-coaching vacancy. There is no word on when or where the interview will take place.

Roman has spent the past three seasons with the 49ers as Jim Harbaugh‘s coordinator. Prior to that, Roman held the same title for two years for Harbaugh’s Stanford Cardinal. Those two seasons were the only ones Roman has spent at the collegiate level as a coach.

Roman’s 49ers will face the Carolina Panthers Sunday afternoon in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Tuesday, it was reported that Vanderbilt’s Franklin “has emerged as the clear frontrunner” for the Penn State job. However, speculation continued this morning that Franklin may still interview for the vacancy with the Washington Redskins. He’s also being pursued by the Cleveland Browns.

Franklin’s boss, VU athletic director David Williams, confirmed to The Tennessean this morning that he met with his head football coach Tuesday night. Outside of that, Williams offered little insight into Franklin’s immediate or long-term future.

I can’t shed any light on that,” Williams told the paper. “I can only tell you that I met with James last night. I’m not going to get into details of the discussion.

“James came in yesterday from working with ESPN on the BCS Championship game and I met with him last night. I met with my football coach. I’m not going to get into details of the substance. I’ve probably already said more than I should
