Auburn RB Tre Mason to forgo senior season, enter NFL Draft

Capitalizing off 1,816 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns and status as a Heisman Trophy finalist, Auburn running back Tre Mason is taking his talents to the next level.

The 5-foot-1o, 205-pound junior announced Thursday he’s leaving Auburn to enter the NFL Draft, and said he received a third-round grade from the draft advisory board. Though Mason’s undersized, his tough, explosive running powered Auburn’s top-ranked rushing offense and led the Tigers to the brink of a BCS Championship.

“Our staff is extremely proud of him,” coach Gus Malzahn said. “I recruited Tre and going to the NFL was a goal of his.”

Mason’s 37-yard touchdown run late in the BCS Championship also pushed him past Bo Jackson’s single-season rushing yards mark at Auburn. His 25 total touchdowns (23 rushing, one receiving, one on a kick return) also set an Auburn single-season record.
