Not so fast: Vanderbilt AD anticipates James Franklin will stay

It’d be surprising if Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams was right about this, but he anticipates James Franklin to be coaching the Commodores for their season opener against Temple later this year.

CBS Sports’ Bruce Feldman first reported Penn State was expected to hire Franklin, who’s enjoyed unprecedented success coaching Vanderbilt over the last three seasons. Williams said he hasn’t heard from Franklin yet about the coach taking a new job.

The most likely situation here: Franklin is negotiating with Penn State and nothing is official yet. And until Franklin physically signs his contract with Penn State, he’d be foolish to tell Williams he’s leaving.

Sit tight. The logical conclusion to this is Franklin winding up in State College, but there’s always the possibility -- however slim -- negotiations hit a snag and Williams turned out to be right.
