Penn State to make ‘major announcement’ Saturday

It appears that Penn State’s search for a replacement for Bill O’Brien is a little over 24 hours from an end.

The university revealed Friday afternoon that president Rodney Erickson and athletic director Dave Joyner will make a “major announcement” Saturday at 4:15 p.m. ET.  While the subject matter was not detailed, it’s believed that Vanderbilt’s James Franklin will be officially introduced as the new Nittany Lions head coach.

Based on Penn State’s acknowledgement of a press conference, it appears Vanderbilt’s final push to retain Franklin has failed.  The news of an announcement comes three days after Franklin was pegged as the clear frontrunner for the job.

According to‘s Brett McMurphy, Franklin will receive a contract that’s worth in the neighborhood of $4.5 million annually.  O’Brien earned just a shade over $3.8 million in his final year in Happy Valley.  In its annual coaches salary database, USA Today pegged Franklin’s total pay with the Commodores in 2013 at $1.842 million.

That $4.5 million figure would put Franklin second in the Big Ten, behind only Ohio State’s Urban Meyer ($4.6 million).

Franklin recently completed his third season with Vandy, compiling a record of 24-15 and leading the ‘Dores to three straight bowl games for the first time in the program’s history.  Prior to Franklin’s arrival, the school had just four bowl appearances in 109 years and won a total of 25 games the previous six seasons.  They’d won 33 over the last decade prior to Franklin taking the job.

$100,000 less than 2 time National Champion, Urban Meyer-that makes sense. Guess my alumni donation letter will come early this year.

Too much money for a guy who doesn’t seem to “fit” at Penn State at all. Franklin’s personality is an odd match with PSU’s buttoned down environment. O’Brien was a great fit there… Franklin? I don’t get it, especially for all that money.

The announcement is “Bobby Petrino is leaving Louisville to become the head coach of Penn State. He wants to thank Louisville for the 2nd chance they gave him.”

Looks like the salary will keep him happy for a bit. Interesting that he is right behind Meyer in compensation. If Franklin’s coaching arc is ascending and Urban’s may be descending. It will make interesting recruiting wars.

Story out of Harrisburg says there’s an issue involving the R word and a few Vandy players, and Franklin’s to get a call from the DA there?

James Franklin will awaken the sleeping giant that is Penn State.

Franklin may be disappointed to find that he can’t back out of these games now:

The$1.8MM pay you’re reporting for Franklin is what he made in 2011. I think Franklin made between $3 – 3.5MM in 2013. He got an extension following the 2011 season. Vandy is a private school so they don’t have to disclose his salary.

So while it’s still a substantial increase, it’s not the 2.5X that is displayed in this article.

It will be wonderful PR for Penn State when Franklin is subpoenaed to testify as a witness in the rape trial of some of his former players. He will be questioned on the stand about instructing an accused rapist to delete videos and/or pictures from his cell phone of the alleged sexual assault after the player showed the video and /or pictures to Franklin. This will be done by the defendant’s Defense Attorney and will be corroborated by multiple witnesses for the defense. Of course the State will be able to cross examine Franklin to again ask him if he saw the videos and/or pictures of the sexual assault on the defendants cell phone and if he told his player to delete the video and/or pictures of the sexual assault recorded on the cell phone. Of course Franklin will deny having any knowledge of anything that occurred or seeing anything or telling anybody to do anything about anything!
But it is going to happen and Penn State is stupid enough to hire a Head Coach with this baggage and to.go through the PR circus once again.
Get ready Happy Valley it’s coming! Maybe Franklin can have all the Assistant Coaches bring their good looking wives to court with him for moral support. That will make for good TV on CNN, HLN, FOX, MSNBC, TMZ ESPN. etc, etc….
