USF adds Paul Wulff as offensive coordinator

Alabama was not the only school to add a former head coach to the coaching staff to serve as offensive coordinator on Friday. As the Crimson Tide were adding Lane Kiffin to their staff, USF also named a former head coach to be their offensive coordinator. On Friday former Washington State head coach Paul Wulff was named the new offensive coordinator of the Bulls.

Wulff was previously the head coach of Washington State before Mike Leach. He was named the head coach after three playoff trips in four years at FCS Eastern Washington. He lasted four seasons after going just 9-40. Although he was never given a tremendous amount to work with in terms of resources or talent, the record of 9-40 showed no progress was being made at a struggling program.

Like Alabama’s hiring of Kiffin, USF is giving Wulff a chance to scale back his coaching responsibilities and a chance to rebuild his coaching profile. USF head coach Willie Taggart sees Wulff as a quality addition to the staff after Wulff spent a couple of years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant working for Jim Harbaugh.

“Paul has great experience at the Division I level in a leadership role and was a standout offensive lineman with a proven ability to develop strong offensive lines,” Taggart said in a statement shared by the university. “His experience working closely with Jim (Harbaugh) gives him a good understanding of our philosophy. He’ll bring some different ideas and will be a great teacher.”

Wulff will have plenty of work to do in his return to the college game. USF scored just 13.8 points per game last season, by far the worst scoring average in the American and the fourth lowest scoring average in the country.

In addition to serving as offensive coordinator, Wulff will also be responsible for coaching the offensive line at USF.

I have a hard time even mustering up a comment with regard to USF’s offense this past season. Just about anything would be an improvement on what they had.

Willie did the best he could with hold overs from Skip Holtz tenure. There should be an improvement this season, and subsequent as he recruits his type of player.
