Todd Grantham leaving Georgia to take Louisville DC job

Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been hired away by Louisville to serve as defensive coordinator for the Cardinals under new head coach Bobby Petrino, ESPN’s Joe Schad reported on Sunday.

He’ll reportedly sign a five-year contract worth $1 million per year.

As recently as Dec. 2, the word was that Grantham would return, but apparently things have changed in the past six weeks.

The Bulldogs finished eleventh in the SEC in scoring defense this past season, allowing 29.8 points per game, which naturally led to speculation that Grantham would be fired after four years in Athens. Fired or not, he’s on his way out (if Schad’s source is correct).

Some Georgia fans will no doubt be glad to see him gone. The question now is whether he can maintain the defensive prowess built up by Louisville under Charlie Strong.

UPDATE (10:17 p.m.): Georgia coach Mark Richt confirmed Grantham’s departure Sunday night.
