As is ofttimes the case, James Franklin will reportedly have at least one familiar face — if not more — on the new coaching staff he’s assembling at Penn State.
Citing a source, Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com tweeted Monday morning that Vanderbilt defensive coordinator Bob Shoop will be leaving Vanderbilt and assuming the same position with the Nittany Lions. Franklin, who officially took over for Bill O’Brien this past weekend, is expected to begin announcing his new staff in short order, although the school has not yet confirmed the addition of Shoop or any other assistant.
Shoop served as Franklin’s coordinator all three seasons he was with the Commodores. Among Shoop’s other coaching stops was a three-year stint as Columbia’s head coach.
In the year prior to the arrival of Shoop and Franklin, Vandy finished 94th in scoring defense (31.2 ppg) and 93rd in total defense (419.2 ypg). In 2013, the Commodores were 46th (24.6 ppg) and 23rd (355.9 ypg), respectively, in those two categories.
In addition to Shoop, Vandy wide receivers coach Josh Gattis, CBSSports.com‘s Jeremy Fowler noted, is expected to follow Franklin to the Nittany Lions.
