Texas coach Charlie Strong will earn $5 million his first year in Austin, then receive a raise of $100,000 his next four years to bring the total value of his contract to $26 million. The Texas board of regents approved that contract today.
Additionally, Strong can earn $100,000 for winning coach of the year, $100,000 per Big 12 championship win, $100,000 for each berth in the national championship and $250,000 for each national championship win. He’ll also earn a 3 percent bonus if Texas finishes in the top five and a 2 percent bonus if it finishes in the top 10. Only three coaches earned $5 million or more in 2013 -- Nick Saban, Mack Brown and Bret Bielema (though private institutions such as Notre Dame and Stanford do not have to report salaries). Strong earned $3.7 million from Louisville in 2013, making him the 10th highest-paid college football coach, according to USA Today.
