OC Ron Prince reportedly leaving Rutgers for Detroit Lions

In the run-up to the deadline for early draft declarations, the exodus is not limited to just players in at least one case.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press tweeted earlier today that Ron Prince has decided to take his leave of Rutgers and take a job with the Detroit Lions. Prince has been with the Scarlet Knights for just one season, spending 2013 as RU’s offensive coordinator. What title Prince would hold for the NFL club is unclear, although it could very well be as offensive line coach.

Earlier Tuesday, the Detroit Lions announced the hiring of Jim Caldwell as its new head coach. Prince spent 2010 and 2011 on Caldwell’s coaching staff with the Indianapolis Colts. Prince was also in the NFL, with the Jacksonville Jaguars, in 2012. During both of those stops, he served as assistant line coach.

He was hired by Rutgers in February of last year.

MyCentralJersey.com notes that, "[i]f Prince leaves, Rutgers will be searching for its fifth offensive coordinator in as many seasons.”

While Prince’s most recent experience came at the NFL level, he’s spent most of his coaching time in the collegiate game. Most notably, Prince was Kansas State’s head coach from 2006-08. After compiling a 17-20 mark, Prince was fired in November of 2008 by the Wildcats and replaced by The Return of Bill Snyder.
